As part of our special coverage for the Hungarian Road to Malmo series, ESC UNITED was lucky enough to interview Compact Disco. Last year they managed to take Hungary to the Finals with their entry “Sound of our hearts”. Csaba Walkó, the lead singer of the band, is currently a judge on A Dal and has a say in who goes to Malmo this upcoming May. We had a chance to catch up with the band to find out what they have been up to over the last year.
ESCUNITED: Your latest video clip for the song “Fly with you” is using several recordings from your Eurovision journey last year. Tell us about your experience in Baku.
It was a fantastic experience, a once in a lifetime opportunity. We had a blast over there, and we felt and still feel tremendously lucky to be able to be part of this event, to see the crowd, the exotic city, to work with the most amazing crew and equipment ever.
ESCUNITED: What has Compact Disco been up to since you returned home?
We were touring heavily, released two more singles in Hungary, one in the summertime and one around Christmas. Meanwhile, we are about to release our first international album in Poland and Germany.
ESCUNITED: Who came up with the name for the band and what is the story behind it?
It was a long time ago, we were searching for names, all three of us were goofing around, throwing silly names around, and I think it was Begi who managed to drop this name. we also came up with Stereoid for our first album, and for a couple of weeks we were undecided which one to be the band’s name and which the album’s, but we settled on the now known version.
ESCUNITED: Tell us a bit about your musical inspirations. Are there any bands or singers that influenced you as musicians?
We had vast inspiration coming for everybody’s different and very prolific taste, but the common points were electronic music, Depeche Mode, Michael Jackson, Guns’n’Roses, Jamiroquai etc.
ESCUNITED: Your fans would love to know your current plans and what’s in the stars for 2013 and beyond. What can we expect from Compact Disco?
Currently we are working on our third album which is expected to be released in October following 3 singles from that album.
ESCUNITED: Hungary is going to pick your successor soon, What is your advice to the act representing your country in Malmö in May?
Have fun, don’t be too nervous, don’t miss the Euroclub. And of course mingle with artists from other countries, with the press, and most importantly with ESC fans!
ESCUNITED: Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk to us. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors and hope to see you back on the Eurovision Stage one day!
Below you can listen to their 2012 entry.

In Baku I stayed in a hotel next door to he HUNGARIAN embassy and visited the embassy after I got copies of the Hungarian entry. The staff were very excited as well and stamped my single with the offiicial embassy stamp. They were very proud of the group and their achievment in Baku
