Backstory Mia Nicola & Dion Cooper
2 years ago, Mia & Dion were paired by Duncan Laurence and his fiancé Jordan Garfield. There is an instant click: both their voices fit together nicely and the message they want to convey is the same. There is room for vulnerability and emotion in their music.
Mia is 26 years old and really grew up with music. She has been taking violin and piano lessons since the age of three. As a child Mia was bullied. This really made her determined to make her dreams come true. ia finds her inspiration in artists such as David Bowie, but especially in the free expression of creativity and the mixing different type of art forms. Her message to the world: That your past has nothing to do with the future and that you are in complete control of that. You can create yourself into the person you dream of being.
Dion is 28 years old and always dreamed of becoming a musician. At the age of fifteen he picked up his guitar for the first time and never let go. He describes it himself as classic rock meets singer songwriter, or Bryan Adams meets Harry Styles. He is on a journey to become the best version of himself and wants to share with the world all the happiness, knowledge and joy he collects along the way. That is his message: happiness lies in your own hands and you use your hands to share.
Mia Nicolai & Dion Cooper will be hitting the Eurovision stage on Tuesday 9th of May in the first half of Semi-Final 1.
The Netherlands in Eurovision
The Netherlands entered the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. A year later, they won the contest for the first time with Corry Brokken. They even won again in 1959 with Teddy Scholten, setting an early record of 2 victories in the first 4 years. After a record-setting 1950s, the new decade didn’t bring much success to the Dutch entries, until Lenny Kuhr finished as 1 of the 4 winners of the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest.
In 1975, The Netherlands won again after Teach-in opened the show with their song “Ding-a-Dong.” The first time that the show’s opener became the winner! However, the Dutch fortunes changed and it took the country 44 long years to win the contest again. In 2019, Duncan Laurence brought the Eurovision trophy back to The Netherlands with his song “Arcade”
Last year, S10 represented The Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin with her song “De Diepte.” It was the first time since 2010 that The Netherlands sent in a song in their native language. After finishing in second place in her Semi-Final, the young Dutch singer just placed outside the top 10 in the Grand Final. S10 finished in 11th place with 171 points.
