It’s the calm after the storm in most of Europe right now, as the Eurovision Song Contest is over for the rest of 2023, but not all countries see this as a time to rest, in fact, others see this as an opportunity, to be ready for the future.

Return of Benidorm Fest

The national broadcaster in Spain (RTVE), are not holding back despite what many might have found as surprising at least. There were high expectations for Spain to do well once again, after Benidorm Fest 2023 proved to be a great success both with viewers, as well as the interest from participating artists.

For Spain and probably mostly for Blanca Paloma, it was quite the surprise to see that the televote ranked her song “Eaea” at the very bottom of the scoreboard, in the public vote. Despite that, RTVE is ready to fight back in 2024.

The broadcaster has already decided to open the submission period for the national final for 2024, with the submission period closing on the 10th of October 2023.

In order to apply, applicants will be asked to carefully read all details, which includes standard rules regarding when a song can be released. Probably the most careful detail at the moment, is that none of the submitted songs can be released before September 1st this year, so if you’re interested, be aware.

RTVE do also state on the submission page that songs can even be submitted, without being tied to an artist, in which the broadcaster will try to provide the song to an interested artist. It is also expected that a total of 16 songs will take part in the competition, with 6 songs being placed as back-up should one be withdrawn.

As pointed out before, Spain was represented by Blanca Paloma at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, which was held in Liverpool on behalf of Ukraine. Here she performed her song “Eaea” which finished 17th on the night of the final, with a combined score of 100 points. The song scored 95 points from the juries, while only 5 points from the public vote, in which 3 points came from Portugal and 2 from Rest of the World. The song unfortunately finished last in the public vote.
