Switzerland has been quiet about their plans for Eurovision 2023 until today, when they revealed that the broadcaster SRF has internally selected Remo Forrer to compete in Liverpool this year!
21-year-old Remo Forrer was the winner of season 3 of The Voice of Switzerland in 2020. During the show, he sang tunes by artists like James Arthur, Lewis Capaldi, and Harry Styles. While nothing specific has been revealed about his Eurovision song, it may be an emotional pop tune in that same vein. Forrer plays the piano, so a piano ballad wouldn’t be out of the question either.
Eurovision.tv reported that the internal selection process involved a professional jury of 20 music industry members, and a public pool of 100 regular television viewers. Forrer’s song will be released on March 7.
Switzerland has qualified for the Grand Final in the last three editions of the Eurovision Song Contest, after failing to qualify four times in a row between 2015-2018. In 2019, Luca Hänni placed 4th with the song “She Got Me” and in 2021, Gjon’s Tears placed 3rd with “Tout L’Univers”. In 2022, Marius Bear only placed 17th with the sentimental ballad “Boys Do Cry”, so if Remo Forrer brings a ballad as well, SRF will need to focus on making it appeal to a wider audience this time.
Based on what we’ve seen of Remo Forrer’s musical style, do #YOU think he will stand out in Semi-Final 1? Or will it all come down to the song and its live performance? Let us know on social media @ESCUnited, on our discord, or on our forum page!
