Maryliss is our next interview here at ESCUnited, and we’re excited to help our readers get to know her a bit better before Selecția Națională tomorrow.
The Romanian public were introduced to Maryliss during her participation on The Voice of Romania back in 2016 under her true name Maria Avramescu. During her audition for the show she garnered a 4 chair turn, and would be eliminated one episode before the live shows. Since then she has been working on her personal music, and is now ready to return to another TV competition. But this time the prize is a ticket to the Eurovision Song Contest.
Hello there Maryliss and welcome to ESCUnited.com, thanks for sparing some time to interview with us! How are you doing today during all the press, rehearsals and more for Selecția Națională?
Hello, it’s my pleasure to participate in this interview and thank you for wanting to know me better. I’m doing very well, I’m very happy to be in the Eurovision finals, me and my team are preparing, the rehearsals are going very well and we can’t wait for the grand final.
Let’s help our readers get to know you better – how would you describe your music and sound to someone who’s never heard your music before? Are there any artists out there that influence or inspire you musically?
I describe myself as an artist who puts a lot of emphasis on emotion and who is inspired by experiences that I go through at one point in time or another.
I have many artists that I like, but the one that really inspires me and in which I find myself completely is Jessie J, but at the same time I also like Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, Jennifer Hudson, Yebba.
All fantastic picks for inspiration, some of these are my personal faves as well. And what is one thing that our readers would be surprised to learn about you, like a hidden talent, passion, etc.?
Oh yeah, I really like gardening, I grow tomatoes every year in my small garden and another passion, related to gardening, is cooking. I really enjoy trying new recipes and playing with different kinds of seasonings. Gardening is a passion that I discovered a few years ago and it is pure therapy, just like music.
And just for fun, if you were to record a Eurovision cover album right now, what songs would you pick for the track list and why?
I would choose to sing Arcade – Duncan Laurence and Måneskin – Zitti E Buoni.
Now you were also on The Voice of Romania back in 2016. While your time on the show may have been short, what did you learn about yourself as an artist while participating on the show?
It was a wonderful experience that made me realize that I want to be a complete artist, to be the kind of artist who will leave something behind and it made me more ambitious to follow this path as a songwriter.
Alright, back to the matter at hand you’ve been selected to participate in Romania’s national selection this year. What were you doing when you learned you’d been selected, and what was your first reaction?
I was at home when I found out that I was selected in the National Final. I remember looking at the email and I couldn’t believe it. For a few minutes, that’s what I did, I looked at the email and a lot of thoughts were going through my mind.
Then I called my family, the producer of the song, my boyfriend and everyone involved to tell them the good news.
And you wrote your song “Hai Vino” yourself, can you tell us about the songwriting process to create your song? Were there other options you considered submitting or was this the only option?
“Hai, Vino!” was the only option because it talks about my present. I have several released singles and many other songs to choose from, because I am also working on my first album, which will be released soon, but in most of the other songs I talk about my past, about disappointment, about suffering and unhealed wounds.
“Hai, Vino!”, is a song full of life, charged with a different energy and emotion.
Of course the winner of Selectia Nacionala will go on to represent Romania at Eurovision this coming May. Has a potential Eurovision participation always been something you’ve wanted to do or is this a newer dream for you?
I wanted to participate for a long time. I always watched the show, I was fascinated by the semi-finals and the international finals and I imagined myself being part of it.
For those who want to connect with you ahead of or after the selection– where can they find you and your music?
They can find me on Youtube, Spotify, Itunes, on all streaming platforms, Facebook: Maryliss, Instagram/ Tik-Tok: maryliss.official.
In closing, do you have a final message you’d like to share with the readers of ESCUnited?
My message to all ESCUnited readers is to vote from their heart, which song they like the most.
MAryliss will compete tenth during Selecția Națională 2023, the Romanian national selection show that will select the country’s next representative and entry for Eurovision 2023. The show’s winner will be decided by a 100% televote process in comparison to prior years.
