Malta’s selection day looms ever closer so it’s time we continued our in-depth look at the participating performers in MESC 2018. Next up is Tiziana Calleja, an avid fan of the contest with a background in musical theatre. We spoke to her about her outlook, theatre background and ambitions and the positive message of her entry…

Hello Tiziana!

First of all thank you for your time talking to us. How are you? Can you introduce yourself? What can you tell us about yourself?

My name is Tiziana. I am a Musical Theatre director, tutor and performer. I am very much intrigued and focused in all I do! I enjoy company and like to meet different people from all around the world.

The song that you will be presenting for the Malta Eurovision Song Contest is “First Time”. What can you tell us about the song?

The story is a simple and fresh one. It’s about being happy in life and, while at times we have rough patches, we still move forward and smile for what’s in store and what the future holds for us. It’s all about emotions, good feelings and why not, love!

What was the inspiration for the song, and did you write it specifically for the Malta Eurovision Song Contest and Eurovision?

It was a collaboration between the Swedish author and composer Tina Vidhav and myself.  Having brought the song to life together makes the experience worthwhile.

What is your impression of the Eurovision Song Contest in general? Do you watch it every year? What is your favourite entry?

Yes, I never missed it! It’s a tradition my family keeps year after year. Eurovision leaves an impact on the artist one way or another. My favourite entry… mmm!! Let’s keep that a secret for now!

Apart from the Eurovision Song Contest, where would you dream to perform?

I would definitely choose to be performing at the West End in one of London’s leading musicals. That is a huge dream of mine… Never too late, there’s always a FIRST, no?

Can you tell us about your first experience with music?

I was still very young, only 3 years old. I was involved in a school play were I performed the role of a queen. I felt the need to hold the microphone and give my all during a song we had to sing…! From then on I never looked back…

How do you describe your music to people?

It’s a passion I live with. A wonderful peaceful moment I love sharing. People around me know this and feel the energy too.

What is a typical day like for you?

Wake up, have breakfast, go to the school where I teach, straight to training, shower and off to open my studio.  Teach there until 7 or 8pm and then rehearsals of any events coming up take place.  Never a dull moment!

What is the best bit of advice you have ever been given?

My grandpa always tells me this saying ‘Do your best, do it very well, do it everywhere!’  and I think he’s right, he has a point! So I live with that saying in mind.

If your life was a song title, what would it be?

“Innuendo” by Queen. Life changes rhythms, tempo and beats and creates a story every day!

We would like to thank Tiziana for her time talking to us and wish her best of luck at the weekend with her participation in Malta Eurovision Song Contest!
