Ira Losco, the runner up in the 2002 Eurovision Song Contest won the Maltese Final for Eurovision this year and therefore won the right to represent Malta again in the world’s largest song contest.
Ira won MESC with “Chameleon” although the decision was made to potentially change the song. A panel got together and listened to two new versions of Chameleon and 9 other songs in order to give Malta the greatest chance in winning the Eurovision Song Contest. Many people were unhappy with the decision, others are happy! This format of selecting the singer and then working vigorously on finding the right song for Eurovision was used in 2015 when Maltese TV decided to use the format for selecting the Junior Eurovision representative and song. Destiny Chukunyere was selected and later the song “Not My Soul” was selected to represent Malta in Bulgaria. The choice proved effective and Destiny went on to take the Junior Eurovision trophy home!
Ira, over the last few days, has been recording the video for her Eurovision entry, the only information we have been given is that the song will be revealed on the 17th of March (three days after the official deadline for song submissions, which worked well for Conchita in 2014) and the HashTag #WOW. Will wow be the title? an acronym? or just describing the song? Who knows? well Ira and her team know butMaltese fans really want to know!
Ira’s new song will be revealed on Thursday and she will perform it on Xarabank on Friday! Will Ira go one place better than she did in 2002? Those who have put a bet on Ira at 40/1 are hoping so!
