The interviews are coming thick and fast for Malta now – time to speak to another regular participant in Maltese selections. We spoke to Lawrence Grey about his performing background, his change of image and direction and his Broadway aspirations…
Hi Lawrence!
First of all thank you for your time talking to us. How are you? Can you introduce yourself? What can you tell us about yourself?
Something about me? My name is Lawrence Gray, I’m not much of a huge man but I have a big heart and a good voice!
The song that you will be presenting for the Malta Eurovision Song Contest is “Love Renegade”. What can you tell us about the song?
My song this year is a style that I never sang before. A good definition of it is different and it marks a new me, and a different kind of me that no one had ever seen before in any way… voice, style, image…!
What was the inspiration for the song, and did you write it specifically for the Malta Eurovision Song Contest and Eurovision?
The inspiration for the song is to never give up in what you believe in life, and, yes, it was written specifically for Eurovision.
What is your impression of the Eurovision Song Contest in general? Do you watch it every year? What is your favourite entry?
The Eurovision Song Contest is a very prestigious show that is growing in its popularity year after year. I never miss it and look forward to it every time. My favourite entry 100% has to be the song “Hold Me Now” from the great Mr. Johnny Logan!
Apart from the Eurovision Song Contest, where would you dream to perform?
I am an artist that’s been around for some time now in the local and foreign star-studded musical theater. I did lots of musicals, most of which I was honored to have played as wonderful main parts and I see myself in Broadway and in the West End one day!
Can you tell us about your first experience with music?
My first musical experience was something that I will never forget for it was then that I understood that my life was to be dedicated to music! I was only 7 years old but it started a journey that got me where I am today and it’s where I was born to be. The stage is my home and music is my everyday life.
How do you describe your music to people?
My description of my music to people is a passionate, romantic, penetrating vibe that you can never get enough of once it hits you!
What is a typical day like for you?
A typical day for me nowadays is trying to spend more time with my family even more that I am a father of my loving son Liam. He gives me strength to get by in life!
What is the best bit of advice you have ever been given?
The best tip of advice that I’ve ever been given is to always believe in myself, have faith for what I believe and never give up until I get what I want, and that is what am doing right now!
If your life was a song title, what would it be?
If my life was a song title it surely has to be “Love Changes Everything” from the musical Aspects of Love because I face everything I do with lots of passion and true love.
We would like to thank Lawrence for his time talking to us and wish him the best of luck with his participation in tomorrow’s Malta Eurovision Song Contest!
