Luxembourg’s national broadcaster, RTL,Tele Letzebuerg, confirmed today that Luxembourg will not return to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2015. RTL cited the financial cost of the Contest, lack of interest, and its preference to focus on news stories rather than entertainment shows, as reasons for not returning.
Despite some rumors that Luxembourg would return in 2005, the country has not participated in Eurovision since 1993 when it was relegated from taking part in the 1994 contest. Luxembourg was one of the original Eurovision participants in 1956, and from its debut until 1993 it only missed one contest in 1959. The country has won Eurovision fives time – in 1961, 1965, 1972, 1973, and 1983.
