There’s been an exciting (no, really) development in the run up to the premiere of the American Song Contest.

In a Superbowl ad that aired on NBC, the network that will broadcast the contest, it was revealed that singer, reality show veteran, and TV host Kelly Clarkson will be co-hosting the event with rapper and actor Snoop Dogg. Watch the ad below:

Kelly Clarkson is a natural fit for the job. She got her start by winning the first season of American Idol. Based on the British format Pop Idol, the show premiered in the summer of 2002 and blew up well past anyone’s expectations. Kelly immediately become a superstar, and she’s been recording and releasing hit records and singles for the past 20 years. Here is the very first moment she appeared on US television screens, auditioning for Simon, Randy, and Paula in a cut up pair of blue jeans she made into a top.

Kelly has also been a coach on The Voice in the US since 2018. That show airs on NBC and boasts much of the same creative team behind the American Song Contest. The Kelly Clarkson Show, a daily talk show she launched in 2019, has been going strong for three years.

Snoop Dogg might seem like a more off-the-wall choice, but he actually has a lot of relevant experience. In recent years, in addition to recording and releasing albums, he has hosted a number of shows. Most notably, he co-hosted a cooking/chat show on Vh1 with Martha Stewart for three seasons. See some highlights below:

The American Song Contest premieres Monday, March 21, and will air live for eight consecutive Mondays. Artists from each of the 50 US states, as well as Washington D.C. and five U.S. territories, will face off, hoping to be crowned the first winner of the contest.

Does this announcement make #YOU a little more excited for the American Song Contest? What would #YOU say the perception of Kelly Clarkson is internationally? When I tell #YOU there are, like, FIVE universally-beloved celebrities in The US, and she’s one of them. Sound off in the comments below, in our forum, or on social media @ESCUnited.
