Aron Hannes Emulsion will be taking part in this year’s Söngvakeppnin, with his first performance later tonight. Can he make it to Eurovision for Iceland? We spoke to the performer ahead of his performance below.
Hello Aron!
First of all thank you for your time talking to us. How are you? Can you introduce yourself? What can you tell us about yourself?
My full name is Aron Hannes Emilsson. I’m a 20 year old singer from Grundarfjörður, Iceland. I’ve been singing my whole life, grew up in a musical family so I’ve been around music a lot throughout my life. I’m really stubborn but in between a really relaxed person!
The song that you will be presenting for Söngvakeppnin is “Golddigger”. What can you tell us about the song?
The song “Golddigger” is basically about a rich guy and he’s delusional about this girl who’s only dating him for the money. And he’s just so tied to her, and doesn’t have the courage to break up with her.
What was the inspiration for the song, and did you write it specifically for Söngvakeppnin and Eurovision?
The team behind the song was always determined to continue to work together no matter the results of the 2017 competition. We’ve launched 2 tracks between the two national finals, “Summernight” and “Morning Kiss”, both becoming very successful in our home country. I was new on the scene a year ago, but the learning process was steep and we were always open for another entry if the right song would be born… and ironically, the first bit of the song with it’s “Golddigger” hook was born the day after the 2017 national finals. We thought it’s potential was huge and we “sat on it” in order to better ourselves in Eurovision 2018.
As for a motive, we decided to forget about all the forever-trending Eurovision motives, such as “Love, Peace, Hunger” etc. and simply celebrate the world as it is, with a track that transforms any ground you walk on, into a dance floor, once you listen to it. We constructed the lyrics around the main hook “Golddigger” because of it’s harmony and fun way it can be phrased in a tune. We are thrilled with the outcome, and hope you are too!
What is your impression of the Eurovision Song Contest in general? Do you watch it every year? What is your favourite entry?
I love Eurovision, I watch every year with friends and family! My favorite entry is “In My Dreams” by WigWam (Norway 2005).
Apart from the Eurovision Song Contest, where would you dream to perform?
Apart from the Eurovision stage my dream performance would be Madison Squere Garden in New York.
Has being on TV made you more self-conscious?
Yes a little bit… I can’t deny that.
What advice you would give to your teenage self?
Keep going boy, you’re doing a good job.
What’s the one thing that might surprise people about you?
I love to imitate people!
What is a typical day like for you?
Go to work, gym, go home and pick up the guitar, sing, sleep. That’s pretty much a typical day for me. Of course I eat well in between that’s important.
We would like to thank Aron for his time and wish him the best of luck in Söngvakeppnin tonight!
