Rumours suggest Nicky Byrne will fly the Irish flag in Stockholm

In discussions with RTE, the Irish broadcaster over the previous months, we brought you the news that they had passed on to us regarding potential times they would announce their plans for Stockholm.

We previously announced that Ireland will reveal their decision ‘no later than January‘, in rumours circulating today, it seems Ireland may be sticking to this plan and making the announcement this month. Alongside this, the rumour mill has thrown a big name into the mix, stating Nicky Byrne, the former Westlife singer, has been internally selected to represent the most successful country in Eurovision (the most wins) in Stockholm. One source discussing this information is the reputable newspaper, The Independent.

Nicky was questioned regarding these rumours stating  “I don’t comment on rumours, I never have done.  Anything you read are unconfirmed reports”. So he has neither confirmed nor denied these rumours, which could be a positive sign! If an act has not been approached by a TV channel then surely they would deny the rumours?! Or could he simply be sticking to his morals and refusing to comment on rumours. Either way we will hear whether the Irish will lose the power to select their representative by the end of January.

Ireland were the kings of Eurovision in the 90s, when they won in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996, adding to their three previous wins in 1970, 1980, and 1987. They started off the new millenium (of love) with 6th place the last time Eurovision was held in the Globe Arena, Stockholm, but, since then they have struggled in the competition only achieving top 10 placing twice. Will Nicky Byrne be the man to bring Ireland back to it’s glory days? Only time will tell!

In 2015 Ireland failed to qualify when Molly Sterling represented then with “Playing by Numbers” ending 12th in the semi-final.
