I was listening to old songs of Christina Aguilera and well, I ended up listening to many songs that were once part of my life. I love remembering the music I used to listen to, and I know that if I discovered them today perhaps I wouldn't like some of them, but as they are part of my old me I do love them. I thought it would be nice to see what music you used to hear when you were a child or a teenager, etc. I don't know if this thread already exists, sorry

So here's a summary of my music history:

As child (let's say 4 - 11/12 years more or less)

* Laura Pausini - Se fue. My gosh, I was ALL THE DAY singing not only this song, but the entire album (but 'Se fue' always was my favourite), and apparently I did it well, so my parents asked me to sing it in front of their friends, and wanted to bring me to a TV show for children, etc luckily they didn't do it For this Laura Pausini will remain a symbol of my childhood forever.
* Disney songs, especially Pocahontas (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSQdIoUoO00), and the love songs of The beauty and the beast (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPdW56zJXZU) and The lion king (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBVzvFJRgYY). Of course, I loved the movies too.
* Celine Dion - My heart will go on. It remains my favourite song today.
* Sonia y Selena. Some of you already know how much I love Sonia y Selena I used to sing all the songs of the album, especially 'Yo quiero bailar' (of course).
* Spice girls. Me and my friends always pretended we were the Spice girls. I was always Emma 'Wannabe' was a must to sing and dance in front of the TV, but I also loved 'Mama'.
* Backstreet boys. When we pretended we were the Spice Girls we also pretended one of the Backstreet Boys was our boyfriend. My boyfriend was Nick Carter, always.
* Britney Spears - Baby one more time / Oops I did it again / Lucky. Loved singing and dancing to this.
* Shakira. I loved all the songs of the album 'Laundry service', especially 'Suerte'.
* Other songs: 'Barbie Girl', 'Lo echamos a suertes', 'Genio atrapado' / 'Ven conmigo' (Christina Aguilera), 'Ave María' (David Bisbal), 'La bomba' (King Africa), etc. I forget a thousand songs.

As a pre-teen and teen (until 18)

The main novelty is that I added reggaeton, rap, punk, rock and metal to my music taste XD. I still listened to Britney Spears (esp. 'Everytime' ), Christina Aguilera (esp. 'Dirrty'), Shakira, etc. I made some pop discoveries like Belinda, Thalía, La Quinta Estación, Kesha.

* Don Omar - Ella y yo / Pobre diabla
* Daddy Yankee - Gasolina
* Hector y Tito - Baila morena
* Aventura - Obsesión
* Calle 13 - Atrevete te te

* Avril Lavigne - Sk8er boi / Complicated / Girlfriend
* Blink-182 - All the small things / Adam's song. I knew my brother listened to some of their songs before, but I only got interested at this age.
* Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication
* Bon Jovi - It's my life
* Evanescence - Bring me to life. I went through a very dark phase and got really interested in everything dark, gothic and related to death. I started watching horror films, which is almost the only kind of films I watch nowadays. I also started listening to Within Temptation ('Ice queen' remains one of my favourites), The Rasmus ('In the shadows'), etc.
* Rammstein - Du hast. My brother showed me this song and at first I didn't like it but later I loved it. Then I listened to other of their songs like 'Amerika', 'Sonne', 'Rosenrot', 'Feuer Frei', etc, and I liked all of them.

University phase until now

My music taste had changed a bit because I didn't listen to reggaeton anymore and I didn't enjoy the typical bland pop song, but for the rest it didn't change much.
* As I studied History I wanted to hear historical music. Here began my interest for baroque and classical music that I found too boring before. I loved discovering Lully (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sy-yugPw_X8), because I hadn't heard anything from him.
* My pop side found its divas with Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Sia
* I developed a taste for dance, house, etc. I liked these songs before, but just didn't listen to them. Here I will mention David Guetta ('Where them girls at', 'Sexy bitch'), Avicii ('Levels'), Martin Garrix ('Animals'), etc.


Now I don't know how to define my music taste, because I like a lot of genres, and it always depend a lot on the song, the melody, the instruments I hear, etc. I always say I don't have a favourite singer or group, I just have favourite songs.

Well this took a while, but it's been really interesting remembering all these songs... Nostalgia 100%.

As a child, 6 to 12 years old

- Steps were the first artist I fell in love with. My first cassette was the double Heartbeat/Tragedy single, though it was their Last Thing On My Mind Bananarama cover that got me onto them. I was a huge Steps fan.

- I specifically remember Irish R&B pop queen Samantha Mumba came next. I bought her album Gotta Tell You and it traveled around with me and my lil' cd walkman everywhere i'd go. I've very specific memories of listening to that album. Always Come Back To Your Love in particular.

- I started building up a little collection of mostly cd singles. I had pop stuff like Britney Spears, B*Witched, Billie Piper, Cher, S Club 7.

- My first taste of alternative music came courtesy of Gorillaz. I had their debut album, which I remember was my cd choice for my end of year school disco one time. Wheatus' Teenage Dirtbag was a huge favourite of mine and I also loved Ash. Actually Teenage Dirtbag I also took to one of the disco's and it got me into trouble because of the scandalous lyrics I played a lot of video games and I picked up stuff I liked from Tony Hawks and Gran Turismo.

- Anastacia started my diva phase. I heard her singing Paid My Dues on Top Of The Pops and it was the first time I remember feeling well and truly slayed by what the human voice was capable of. I went out the next day and spent my pocket money on her album Freak of Nature and thus started my Anastacia obsession. First true sign that I was a little homosaxual in the making as I remember wanting to literally be her. Every time I'd walk past a cabinet displaying tinted sunglasses i'd be fantasizing.

- My diva phase continued with Shakira and Christina Aguilera. At one time if you asked me what my favourite song was i'd respond with Whenever Wherever aka Suerte. Laundry Service was also my favourite album back in the day. Sugababes were my favourite girl group.

- I bought most of No Doubt's albums, and had an obsession with Don't Speak. If I were to pick one song to define the 90s it would be that. I would have been 11 or 12-ish at this time I think when I also started getting into some punk sounds with The Distillers. I for sure had a skater phase. I like Red Hot Chili Peppers too, through my dad as they were and still are I think his favourite band.

My teenage years

- A family member passed on his big old computer to me, and I got my first taste of enjoying music online, and also enjoying a big virus as I tried to download Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse Of The Heart from Limewire. That didn't stop me though from having an 80s moment. I got into Bonnie, T'pau and Meat Loaf. Also through the internet I started listening to Jpop. Mika Nakashima was my favourite.

- Around the same time I had a thing for retro divas. I discovered Amanda Lear and oh boy, I became obsessed. I loved a lot of disco during this time, and discovered some quite obscure (at least in my country) artists. Dalida was another big one I became obsessed with.

- During my mid teens I started listening to jazz music. Artists like Billie Holiday and Amy Winehouse changed my life and the way I listened to music. A lounge song from the video game Rule of Rose called Love Suicide also shaped me a lot.

- Elliott Smith I first came across when I was maybe around 16, and little did I know at the time how important his music would later become to me. It helped me through those moody teen years. Heck, it still helps me out today. I'll always love him and be grateful he lived long enough to gift the music that he did to us.

- I was still big on pop and R&B during my teens. I loved Amerie, Lily Allen, Gwen Stefani, Brandy and also got into indie artist Bat For Lashes. I loved the Swedish group BWO, along with After Dark and Alcazar. I imported their stuff from a swedish cd site. I was really into Swedish pop back then.

Young adulthood

- I rediscovered singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright and become a big fan. He was my favourite artist at one point. I bought every album he released, and he encouraged me to start playing the piano.

- I continued listening to jazz and soulful stuff, discovering artists like Chet Baker, Jimmy Scott, Madeleine Peyroux, Melody Gardot and Antony and the Johnsons. I discovered Antony through people telling me that my own voice was very similar in tone.

- I started listening to folk music. I loved Nick Drake, The Unthanks, Keaton Henson, Bill Fay etc. Marianne Faithfull and Judee Sill remain two of my favourites to this day.

2012 onward

- My darkest year was 2012. I started listening to Nico, the Velvet Underground singer who has a notoriously bleak and difficult back catalogue of music. To this day she remains the artist I know the most about. I studied every detail of her life I could find. Every book, film, piece of footage I could watch. I was really depressed at the time her music came into my life, but I don't know.. I think at that moment I was equipped to listen to it. Whilst on the theme of Nico, I also got into her band The Velvet Underground, and listened heavily to John Cale.
- Soap&Skin came the very same year, and was another artist that I think defined my taste, along with Nico. Very dark piano ballads and experimental music.
- Around the same time (perhaps a bit before actually) I was listening to Perfume Genius (dark piano ballads also).
-Other artists from this time include Polly Scattergood, John Grant, Olafur Arnalds, Nicole Atkins and Julee Cruise. Angelo Badalamenti's work was very important to me.

- Speaking of experimental music, I was really weird during these years. I started reading the experimental music magazine, WIRE. I got into free jazz (think someone screaming over freak out jazz jams for 15 minutes). Patty Waters, Josephine Foster, Yoko Ono, Xiu Xiu etc were names I liked a lot.

- In 2013 I discovered garage rock. Shannon and the Clams were my first taste. From there I went crazy for weird gnarly stuff like Hunx and His Punx, NoBunny, Jay Reatard and King Tuff. I started digging through the Burger Records roster (basically the most awesome label for garage rock). I loved La Sera, Ty Segall, La Lenguas, Crocodiles.. too many to name here actually.
- Biggest name of all though was Mikal FREAKING the god Cronin. He broke my heart and made me feel good at the same time with his music. Garage rock still to this day probably remains my favourite genre.
- Kurt Vile came into my life also this year. I was well and truly into rock music at this point with Mac DeMarco and The War On Drugs being other big faves.

- I arguably reached my weirdest point I think with Ariel Pink. Well it's hard to get much stranger than a man recording songs from his bedroom, using the sounds from his armpits as percussion. Last year Ariel overtook Nico on my lastfm page as my most played artist ever. He's a prolific artist that's very dear to me. My anti-hero.
- Also during this time listening to Part Time, The Space Lady, R. Stevie Moore, The Shaggs. I was in full on outsider artist mode.

- I got into psychedelic folk with Linda Perhacs and Weyes Blood.

- Then the Beatles came. During my childhood I'd hear my parents listening to them a lot, but it was a while before I finally explored their work myself. I more specifically got into John Lennon though. I bought a boxset of his albums and even picked up the experimental albums he did with Yoko.

- In 2015 I started exploring hip hop. Dessa was my first love. I then checked out her collective, Doomtree. That was an eyeopener for me. Showed me what I had been missing out on for years.
- Sadistik soon came along. I've listened to his stuff more than anyone these past couple of years. Hip hop actually I'm really heavily into these days. It's been my main source used for discovery. Eyedea, Homeboy Sandman, Gavlyn, Demrick, Sims. Delving into the underground side of hip hop has rewarded me deeply.

- More recently i've been listening to alt-country (Aaron Lee Tasjan), R&B (Kali Uchis, Jorja Smith etc) and even some pop again (Poppy and Kesha). I've delved into areas I never thought I would such as emo rock (Sorority Noise) and party metal (Andrew W.K.).



Today i'm very open when it comes to music, as I guess i've been to a lot of corners. I always am up for discovering, and being surprised. I'm open minded. At the same time though i'm extremely picky. Brutal actually, especially when it comes to rock and singer-songwriter stuff. I love music but I realize I've got a really low tolerance for anything I think is banal and vapid. Take a lot of Eurovision national selections for instance. The vast majority of the songs in the French selection this year make me want to curl up into a ball and die (see, brutal). I've become such a bah humbug when it comes to commercial pop these days. There are a few saviours I guess like Ariana Grande (I'm starting to appreciate her). Otherwise it's just tuneless pop, banal boy next door singer-songwriters and dreary forced soul pop. Actually i'll end it on a positive note. Nostalgia is such a powerful thing. This past year I've been listening to Anastacia a lot and even going back for some Britney. We change over time but I think some music will always hold special places in our hearts, no matter how much the songs have "aged" or if we've seemingly moved on. In many ways I thought I'd moved on but I'd be a filthy liar if I said that Baby One More Time doesn't fill me with the desire to stand up and sing every darn word whilst twirling around in bliss like i'm 8 years old again.

hmm let me have a good ol' think. I don't think my taste has really changed all that much tbh always loved me a good a hit.

Childhood - Till about 11-ish years old
Growing up I never really doted on any particular singer, not until my teenage years at least. I just liked songs I heard here or there. Here are some examples:

-Shaggy - It wasn't Me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2g5Hz17C4is I loved this song when I was young, although I didn't have a clue what the lyrics were actually saying. I knew it word for word and would sing it all the time in the car etc.
-Vengaboys - Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llyiQ4I-mcQ Same as above, the lyrical content I did not understand. But i'd always dance to it.
-XTM - Fly on the wings of love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4bxUOxY2M0 Early signs of an esc fan in the making. One of my absolute favourites from my childhood, still is actually a song I love. Olson Brothers who? XTM did the the lit version. I loved it before I knew ESC was even a thing.
- Little Trees - Help! I'm A Fish https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqqOVo6q5J0 Now this was one of the few songs that I did own a copy of. Also I loved the movie it is from.
- Steps - 5 6 7 8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NO-h9PFum4 Ok Steps, a British institution. I put 5 6 7 8 as I think it was the one I loved the most, but they had many its. Another one I loved was 'Tragedy'.
- Girls Aloud - Sound of the underground https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9Wv4SCBiTE I remember them winning pop stars the rivals, my mum liked the boyband I liked Girls Aloud. They have soooo many hits, and I still listen to them now time to time.
- Sugababes - About you now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3KEyJOOsvQ This song pushes just to the edges of this era, but it's my big favourite from them. They had many hits.
-Cascada - Miracle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCzz4_FPbug That start of a long career as a Cascada fan, but coming as I was finishing up Primary school.

Teenage years until about 16/17
This was an era that was somewhat short but influenced by my brother, who was super into hardcore 'rave' music. It's also the time that got me way into Cascada for proper.

- DJ Hixxy - I See the light https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnVEJ26f8dQ I was OBSESSED with this song. It was literally the hit back then that teenagers would listen to late at night while in a park somewhere drinking cheap cider they got some one else to buy. It's an example of the sort of 'hardcore' music I enjoyed.

- Manian - Ravers Fantasy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RrtY2lpf40 Some may know, Manian is actually 1/3 of Cascada. -O-
- Cascada - Everytime We Touch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFMz_3ZvKf8 Cascada part of all eras. my list would be massive, but just list the Cascada hits of this era. Dance and pop music really started to peak in these times (decline starting around 2013ish) Evacuate the Dancefloor isn't my favourite of theirs, but it was probably one of their biggest, if not the biggest charting hit and it's still played now. Cascada is timeless and anyone my age knows who they are. They still tour extensively and fill out venues.

College late teens until now
Arrive Ashley to the forum. These parts feel like they may be the biggest and are essentially still applicable now, but I need to break them up as some music that I super love now was introduced to me around this time, but needs a section dedicated to it. Some of these date wise fits into the era before, but it wasn't until this part I got super into them, although I liked them in the time before also.

- Jennifer Lopez - On The Floor ft. Pitbull https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4H_Zoh7G5A I loved those hot beats and the more ethno-y sound it had, it was super interesting and enjoyable for me.
- Nicki Minaj - Starships https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeIJmciN8mo Nekci be dropping hits.
- Cheryl - Promise This https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8F1q0Vn4u4g Cheryl Cole dropping hits also, GA icon and my fave x factor judge (until Nicole Scherzinger appeared).
- Taio Cruz - Dynamite https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vysgv7qVYTo A living legend. Producing big hits, Dynamite the biggest. 'Break your heart' and 'Higher' other great examples.
- Pitbull - International Love ft. Chris Brown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdXesX6mYUE I literally loved this song, still do. I liked Pitbulls music, even if people love to hate him.
- The Wanted - Glad you came https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ggzxInyzVE I didn't really like boybands tbh, not in any big way at any point. I'm not an 11 year old girl, but I really enjoyed The Wanteds pop music, it had a nice, catchy vibe and wasn't overly sugar coated.

They're some very cherry picked examples of quite a broad range of hits, but you get the point. I was past the super rave hits, and maturing to the more mainstream pop scene, albeit slightly out of time with reality. It wasn't all party hits though, I did also enjoy some other artists who weren't pop dance icons. Gabrielle Aplin & Foxes the main examples, although the latter has a super hot dance hit with Zedd and has quite a pop beat in her music, but it doesn't quite fit in with the mainstream imo. They're both people I've bought albums from, something I've rarely actually ever done. Also both I knew before their songs racked up millions of views.

Salvation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IEMnWhT_7c Another big favourite. How the song builds so slowly to that epic moment at the end of the song is something, I always imagined how epic this would look at esc.

Foxes
Youth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx0x5aRPhgk I knew and loved this before it become an actual hit because a tv show used it and helped to launch Foxes career a bit.
Let go for tonight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pecj5GGjQi8 The music video is this song, so much fun and enjoyable and just letting go.
Holding onto heaven https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qklYTlTSeJc I enjoyed the sort of gospel-ish vibes (maybe not the right way to describe) with how her songs sound.

Now onto modern era Ashley. This was when the delights of WV appeared in a dream to me and I got to see for real the world of music outside of the UK/USA. Particularly Spanish Latino music and also balkan/Greeks hits. This probably why I was always so obsessive over Yaros summer hits from the FR as it was all really new to me. I've always loved me an ethno sound in songs, and actually I suppose it was clear i'd be a fan as I always loved Spanish entries at esc (2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015) as well as those from Greece and Balkan countries. I think if any era had such a drastic change for me it is this, as my roll with music was quite lacking up until that point. It's hard to summarise it, so I'll just list the songs that I've got to know and are now have a permanent home in my personal land of super hits. I was seriously born in the wrong country.

- Maluma - Carnaval https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufa0K9w9z2c Always top of my playlist counts, I love this song. It's easily his best. Although i enjoy much of his other music. It's a super catchy song and easy to dance and listen to. I also know the lyrics to it and can sing it - even though I don't know spanish pretty much at all. x
- Don Omar & lucenzo - Danza Kuduro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUFgacK8sZ0 those vibes and beats. Gosh. It was a huge hit back on its release and I can see why.
- Jesse y Joy - Ecos De Amor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WHGlEYaBgU I think my favourite song of all time, I love the atmospheric feel and the passion of it - it's about as emotional as I get with music. Although I do know the translation, you don't need to know them to feel the song. It also happens to easily be their best song ofc.
- Katia feat. Wildboyz - Boom Sem Parar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wczh_pX9pSs Ok not Spanish, but Portuguese. Same area. x Cristiano Ronaldo better watch out, as Katia is coming for him and out staging him big time with hits like this.
- Paulina Rubio - Boys Will Be Boys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXywgkY2O5U An english hit but with all those vibes and beats.
- Dan Balan - Lendo Calendo (ft. Tany Vander & Brasco) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mzr8wrUizE4 The Moldovan hit for the list LENDOOOOOOO xsing this has such big potential in the UK imo, especially back around its release. I guess because it's not fully english or radio approved it never made it. But this a great example of what I love in music. Great beats, catchy and powerful.

This is really starting to get too long, and I'm not a fan of essays that have taken me like 2 hours to write (like this post so far). So I'll cut it here, although i could go listing more. Among those few examples up there, there is the greek hits and then Greeks goddesses Eleni Foureira and Helena Paparizou, the sea of Balkan hits, Romanian hits, Bulgarian hits. I've never really been into dark slow, depressing music. For me, wallowing in such music was the worst thing to do and rather listening to helps helped to lift me and take me to happier times. I'll always be a fan of pop and dance music, I don't think i'm really in a growing stage anymore musically. I guess we all move and change a bit slightly, but I really can't see my taste switching drastically.

Ages 6-12:

-When I was very young I was obsessed with Elvis for some reason and discovered a few 1950s songs on karaoke videos I used to watch.
-I was into Steps+S Club 7, although I am more now than I was then.
-Hear'Say-Pure and Simple was a massive tune although I don't like Pop Idol or the X Factor because of Simon Cowell.
-Busted were the first band I really got obsessed with, although I find it harder to get into their newer stuff.
-Stars in their Eyes has always been a big influence on my life and whenever I hear Chris de Burgh-Lady in Red and Freddie Mercury-It's a kind of magic I associate them with Stars in their Eyes.

Ages 12-18:

-I was very angry with Charlie for splitting up Busted.
-I actually liked both the Crazy Frog and Lonely by Akon although I don't care about his other songs.
-When I got largely into tokusatsu in late 2005 I soon discovered Japanese tokusatsu-related songs and thus my interest in foreign countries began.
-I got into Eurovision after the 2009 contest.

As an adult

-2011 was the year my music taste broadened as I discovered both more mainstream Japanese music as well as Korean music and I also got into the Uzbek song Shahzoda-Kechalar.
-The first ABU TV Song Festival was a big event to me and I massively enjoyed it.
-I finally started to discover more music in Welsh in 2013 after learning it since 2008!
-In December 2013 I began learning Korean, as a result I began to discover much more Korean music the following year (although strangely I tend to be more into 90s Kpop than modern stuff).
-I got more largely into Eurovision in late summer 2014 after not being massively into 2013 or 14 when I met new friends who were into it.
-I began a show on an internet community radio station early last year where I can pretty much play what I want as long as there's no swearing which helped me discover all sorts of music.
-I thought Calvin Harris ft.Dua Lipa-One Kiss was the best song in years.

I was born in 1979 and grew up with... of course! German Schlager! My mum was a big fan of it.

Until I was 8 I was a big fan of Roger Whittaker. God, this man is my hero. Not only does he have the most wonderful voice in the world! He sang dozens of German songs without knowing a single word of German - and still managed to pronounce them that well that I would not know he was British.

The first "international" song I do remember was at the age of 3. It was a number one hit in Germany for a along time and it was played on the radio every single day. It was Maid of Orleans by OMD. I still love this one so much!

In 1988 I was hit by a song of a band that is still my most favourite to date: Roxette! When The Look was released, I was so struck by it that I stopped listen to Schlager but my interest in listening to more international music was awakend.

Then it became a little strange.

I absorbed everything about international music and became a big fan of the Norwegian band a-ha and the British band Duran Duran. [I am a huge fan of all three to the present day.]

So when all my friends at school started listening to Nirvana, Pearl Jam and all that grunge punk stuff in the early/mid 90s, I was about 15 and still into the 80es and got laughed at by my classmates. At that time I hated rock music. 80es were totally uncool in the eyes of my friends!

But then, the best album ever was released and changed my favourite music forever.

MORNING GLORY by OASIS

I hated Wonderwall but I wanted to be like the cool kids at school and bought the album. It was the most magical moment of my life. I listened to the CD again and again and I asked myself how I could ever live without such great music. [Fun fact: I still hate Wonderwall, it's the worst song on the album!]

For a year or two I was heavily into britpop... Manic Street Preachers, Ocean Colour Scene, Blur, Pulp, the Verve... hello you dirty sexy British glam rockers with the brash accents out there!

But then I bought "Angel Dust" by Faith no more, just because I liked the cover. Gosh, that was an eye-opener! I felt those guitars pumping through my veins, I was delighted... that was the moment, Metal came into my life and remained there ever since!


And the moral of the story... nobody ever believes me when I say, when asked about my favourite music: METAL - 80s - sometimes Schlager and basically everything else!

Metal is actually my favourite music, but my favourite bands are still the ones who debuted in the 80es.(see above)

My favourite metal bands these days are: Sonata Arctica, Paradise Lost, Nightwish, Linkin Park

But when I'm in the mood I listen to almost all kinds of music except for German Volksmusik and I'm not a big fan of gangster rap/r'n'b/black music/hiphop/recent German pop songs.

Childhood (until 12)

MIKA was my favorite artist back then. His first album Life in Cartoon Motion came out when I was 9, and I've been in love with it ever since. Today I'm not always satisfied with his music choices, but he's uniqueness and golden voice make so I still come back to him.

Kyo : If you're not a French-speaker you most likely don't know who I'm talking about, but gosh, I love them. They are my oldest music discovery, back in 2003. I'm not sure the lyrics were made for a 5 years old to listen to but it seems I didn't care as I always asked my parents to put their album on when driving.

Owl City : I don't remember how I stumble across it, must have been an AMV, but it was a catch right away.

Teenage Years (2011 - 2015)

That's when rock comes in (all types). First there was Linkin Park but all the followings had a big impact on my music history : Green Day, AC/DC, Queen, Sum 41, Fall Out Boy, Gun's & Roses, The Who, Nickelback (no matter what people say), Police, Shinedown...
Within Temptation became one of my favorite things back then too. I guess I have to thank the AMVs for that.

If we talk about more radio-friendly music, Imagine Dragons started to become popular thanks to Night Visions and I've been a fan ever since. Btw, Dan Reynold's EP with his wife are worth the journey (look up Egyptian).
Coldplay, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé played a good part too.

At some point I came across J-Rock music like Uplift Spice, Flow, Granrodeo, Oldcodex and Stereopony.

On a totally different genre, I've started to appreciate Jean Jacques Goldman. Until then I deemed him as a singer for older people only, but it turned out I didn't understand the beauty of his lyrics and compositions.

Of Monsters and Men was my first contact with indie/folk and I loved it, Bob Marley gave me life while driving in the summer, Avril Lavigne was there for my popular-teenage-girl quota, John Denver and Carrie Underwood gave me a taste of country music, OneRepublic didn't forget me on so-so days...

University Years (2015 and onward)

There're still the same genres as teenagers, but my taste became more eclectic.
First I dived into the folk/indie pop scene like Shake Shake Go or Hyphen Hyphen and so many other artists I can't name, then there was more EDM with Avicii and more alternative styles like Twenty One Pilots and X Ambassadors...

Then there was Eminem. Of course I knew who he was beforehand, but this is the time I really started to appreciate his music. Until then Rap wasn't really my thing (it's still not, but I have quite a few tracks in my playlist).

There was things like Talco, La Pegatina and Boulevard des Airs, more local, more genuine.
And more recently, Eastern European music. I can't name artists because I catch a few track there and there, but here's my most recent discoveries : Eldar Djarakhov, Pavel Calta, ATMO.

There, that's roughly my music history. Appreciate the effort, I had to dig into the 800+ tracks of my mp4.

If I was going to write in detail about music in my life, it would take ages, so I'll try do to a summary

The first songs I remember really liking were some early-mid 90's Estonian eurodance tracks when I was about 6. There was this show that I watched, 7 Vaprat (you can check out videos on Youtube) that had artists perform their songs while people could vote for them, they had 7 songs and the 2 lowest scoring ones would be replaced with 2 new ones every week. It was a huge deal in 90's Estonian music, pretty much every artist was there at some point and it lasted well into the 2000's. Of course, the post-occupation Estonian music scene/industry itself was just starting out and rapidly growing back then and that definitely influenced my interest in music. That was also probably why so much of our 90's pop was sort of electronic - because it sounded "new", there was really no electronic music in the Soviet era.

I didn't come across a lot of non-Estonian music at this point. I was largely exposed to foreign music in 1998, for two reasons: getting a cassette radio for my birthday and because Muusika Sinule, a music video show, started on one of the TV channels. 1998 to about 2002 (basically my "tween"/early teen years) was the most influential musical period for me, I also started trying to write my own music at this time. Initially, at 10 or so, I had a more random taste - I continued to listen to eurodance like E-type, liked some of those remixes of old disco/eurodisco tracks with rap verses like N-Trance's Staying Alive and Modern Talking's new versions, and I was a fan of Aqua (Aquarium was the first album I owned, also a gift). I still like some of their songs, there's actually a lot of variety (although I remember not caring much for Barbie Girl even back then lol). I also became more familiar with hip-hop now, the Estonian all-star group A-Rühm was formed then and I heard some American stuff (although I've generally preferred European hip-hop, it tends to put more emphasis on the music/instrumental which I like more).

When I was 12, two electronic music stations started broadcasting and introduced me to more specific genres and less mainstream stuff. Trance and modern electro (electronic music+hip-hop, essentially) both had their peaks around the late 90's/turn of the century; I already sort of knew Music Instructor (one of my favorite artists ever) and I also discovered Bomfunk MC's (as well as other JS16 -produced music like Darude), alongside artists like Caater (an Estonian trance group), Flying Steps, DJ Quicksilver, Mauro Picotto... I didn't really have bias against any music just because it was 'popular' or because of stereotypes (and I mostly cared about whether a song appealed to me regardless of its genre), so there was a lot of different music that I liked, for example the Cheiron Studios pop sound of Max Martin, Denniz Pop, Rami Yacoub etc. that was also copied by other songwriters of the time (you know, early Britney Spears and various boybands like Five, that stuff). In fact, Larger Than Life by Backstreet Boys and Stronger by Britney Spears are among my favorite songs next to the likes of On the Move by Barthezz or Music Instructor's Super Fly. There were also some other dance genres that weren't my favorites but I still liked (for example italo house). And while I wasn't much of a rock fan there was some rock/metal that I somewhat listened to, like Terminaator who I first saw on 7 Vaprat around 1995 and who pretty much defined rock for me, some of those Limp Bizkit and other songs that fused hip-hop with rock and metal, plus Within Temptation.

Several trends had changed by 2003, for example trance was replaced by house as the most popular electronic genre; in my teens I had this nostalgia period when I thought all current music sucks and whatnot (although I ended up growing out of it, so I find it funny seeing people who insist that it actually is like this). But in 2004, I did finally get internet access in my home (I had previously used internet cafes and such) and now I could get most of the music I grew up with "on demand" for the first time, through the p2p services of the day like Kazaa Lite. It may be weird for a younger person but having access to the music you liked wasn't always easy back in the day, especially it was rarer. I used to record music from the radio constantly and a lot of my music memories are waiting for a specific song to record it. I couldn't always buy any album that I wanted and lot of that music wouldn't be available here anyway, not to mention not always knowing the titles/artists of the songs. Now that I had internet, I tried to make sure what songs those were and it took quite an effort (lot of them are instrumental and it wasn't easy to search Google for lyrics anyway back then). I also got cable and started watching some foreign music channels like French MCM and German VIVA and liked some of the music there, that was pretty much my main source for new music then (much of it was hip-hop; it included Kenza Farah, Soprano, Sido, D!Nation (an overstay from the electro period), Monrose, ASD)

I eventually got over that nostalgic bias (growing up thing, mostly, and learning a lot more about music) and discovered a lot of impressive new music. In general, my music tastes are evolving rather than outright changing like with some people, so I continue to like most of the stuff that I've liked in the past while being open to new music.

Yeah, it was popular in loads of countries (although which electronic genres exactly varied by region; for example, it seems that southern Europe like France and Italy was much more fond of house while trance ruled the northern parts). The Nordic countries had several popular acts like Antiloop, there are lots of Russian comments on many of 90's dance videos on Youtube so they were obviously successful there and as for Estonia, the trends here were influenced by Germany and the Nordics a lot. And the 90's were the time when electronic music massively branched out and became really popular, so it makes sense.

Yeah, you're right. Back then in times without internet (although I started surfing the net in our local internet café in 1996 but it was more about chatting in chat rooms) I didn't become aware of what was popular in any other country (except for some exceptions). My only link to other countries was Eurovision!
