I once grew up listening to girl groups during my childhood days, preferably from my home country. Some of the novelties you must check out:

Nowadays? I have to vote for South Korea. That I can think of, it's the country that has more groups (both male or female) that have potential to have worlwide hit songs. However, I also think there's a lack of competition. Today the concept of "boyband" and mostly "girlband" is not very used in western countries anymore. I think the concept is still more active in Asian countries. But yeah, from the Asian countries, South Korea is definitely the one with most attractive bands for people everywhere. From the looks of the singers to the songs (that may even have some random English words in the middle and in their title- eg: "Electric Shock", "Mr. Mr", etc.) and to the dance routines during the show.

If South Koreans songs were sung by a caucasian girlband in english they would have been tons of n°1 in the billboard trust me. Well we should say that a lot of korean songs are written by nordic countries, they're just polishing them to the extreme.

To give a few :

Sugababes are my favourite girl group of all time, and I still listen to their albums today. I enjoy all lineups except 4.0 (the final lineup of Jade, Heidi and Amelle), and I was so excited about the original lineup reunion.

Very hard topic to vote in. United Kingdom is my home country and there are many girl groups here I grew up with like Sugababes, Atomic Kitten, Spice Girls (who I think are a bit overrated), The 411 (who were very underrated), Girls Aloud (best thing to come from a talent show ever), All Saints, Mis-Teeq, Girl Thing, Honeyz (my first girl group cd was their single "End Of The Line", which I bought when I was 8 years old). Those were my childhood! Oh and Vanilla, with their super hot hit "No Way, No Way" and my fave "True To Us".

United States had great RnB groups like Destiny's Child (a time when I actually enjoyed Beyonce) TLC, The Braxton Sisters (@TheCONWELxheat) and I think they are top for vintage girl groups like the The Shangri-Las and the The Ronettes. There are some bands recently who take from that old style of sound, my favourite being the now disbanded garage rock band, The Vivian Girls. Oh and I can't forget to remember the great outsider girl group, The Shaggs, who formed in the late 60s.

Lastdreamer has introduced me to many great Lithuanian girl groups through participating in WorldVision. My favourite is of course YVA, but there seem to be many other great ones too. A fantastic country for pure pop fun and catchy tunes. Recently Lastdreamer shared YVA's albums and I fell in love with the super catchy "Viliojau Viliojau".

I know that South Korea is a very popular country for girl groups. I haven't listened to that much of their music but I enjoy some songs by KARA.

Maybe bias showing here, but I think I will vote for UK. We had some of the best girl groups, and at any given time there's always one here that's on the airwaves and very popular.

Vanilla xheart

From popular :uk: groups I love only Girls Aloud, but low-known or/and short lived :uk: groups were my weakness before my obsession by Lithuanian female pop music.

Kenickie and Shampoo were the most popular from them.

Other are : Loose Chippin's, Supersister, Benefit, Girls@Play, 21st Century Girls, Dragonheart, Clea, TSD, Crush, Thunderbugs, Lovebites, Hot Pantz, Faders, Pipettes...

YVA really need to do a cover version on Lithuanian and video/performance with similar sexy outfits.

xheart

Sadly active :lt: girl groups lost their charm in last 2-3 years and their last songs sounds like the modern girlbands from :us: and Little Mix.

#Everything we need is YVA's 5th studio album
#Make Lithuanian girl groups great again

LastDreamer wow, your knowledge of UK pop girl groups is amazing! I used to listen to many of these you mentioned: The Pipettes, Shampoo, Clea ("Download It" is such a great song) and 21st Century Girls. It took me many years in fact to find that self titled song from 21st Century Girls again. I remember singing it as a child but they disbanded after their one minor hit. I finally found it again thanks to the internet.

I like the Loose Chippin's song you shared. I don't remember them though.

I can't believe I forgot to mention Cleopatra! Massive hit from my childhood and one of my faves.

For me, the girl groups from the 70s and 80s are always the best, particularly:

:de: Arabesque (particularly the lead singer Sandra xheart)

:uk: Toto Coelo

:us: Bananarama

:de: Silver Convention

:es: Baccara

:pt: Doce

:us: The Bangles

:uk: Cats U.K - Luton Airport

:us: Reparata - Shoes

I like the Loose Chippin's song you shared. I don't remember them though.

Loose Chippin's possibly is the most mysterious :uk: girl groups from that era, there is not any information about them in Internet. I know these girls olny because have one old low-known teenage :uk: magazine about music (titled like "Buzzin'"). There is a short interview with them and a photo from "Girls Gettin' Naughty" video.

You can find three their official videos on Youtube, but this group didn't release any singles (don't know a reason of cancelling).

Some years ago I did a retrospective and selected personal # 1s for each week, based only on UK chart. I finished three decades (70s, 80s, 90s) + 1964-1969 + 2000-2005.

:uk: Benefit - Sex Sells

Don't know why but this song was a big hit in :ru: without single release in any European country (include their home country).

Benefit - What's It Gonna Be

I still have their album on a cassette (the one from the most rare albums in my collection). Also I have Clea's "Identity Crisis", although the album was not released in the U.K, but released in Russia, Eastern Europe and Asia.
