I'm certainly not that kind of person who lives in the past but of course I somehow like thinking back when it comes to Eurovision... During the past years the contest definitely reached a higher musical level but I really miss(ed) some typical Eurovision songs this year and also 2013-2014! I'm talking about:

1. Balkan ballads
The ex-yugoslavian countries have really good songs this year but in my opinion their cultural identity isn't as visible as it was some time ago! I still love the classic Balkan ballads of the 2000's and I really hope for a comeback in 2017!

My favourites:
1. ::cs 2004 of course
2. :rs: 2008 xlove
3. :ba: 2006

2. Entertaining Greek songs
Greece was such a great country in the 2000's when it comes to Eurovision. This year's and last year's greek entry however is so dreadful... xscared

My favourites:
1. :gr: 2005 of course
2. :gr: 2007 YASSOU!!
3. :gr: 2010

3. Oriental sounding songs
E.g. from :tr: before its withdrawal or :az: before its addiction to swedish songwriters...

My favourites:
1. :tr: 2009
2. :az: 2009
3. :am: 2010 xlove

4. Crazy/ odd Eastern European songs
Well I don't miss them THAT much and I'm glad we don't have years like 2007 anymore but some songs where really entertaining!

My favourites:
1. :md: 2005
2. :md: 2011
3. :bg: 2007 - great but also really annoying

5. Outstanding/ unusual/ different songs in general
Of course we have good and outstanding songs every year but there is a little tendency towards generic Scandinavian songs...

My favourites:
1. :ee: 2009 - JUST AMAZING
2. :ro: 2010 - great song, amazing staging - one of my all-time favourites
3. :ee: 2010 - wasn't that successful but I really like it
+ so many others of course

Honestly, I find Estonia's 2010 song and performance estimative and unique. It was a brave step to take in Eurovision, and I deeply believe Malcolm Lincoln should have made it to the final.

Oh my lovely balkan ballads!!! xheart xheart xheart You pointed just in that section all my favorite ESC songs of all times! I love generally all etnic-based songs. Stop all this Swedish leftovers importation that's been happening for the last few years! #makeeurovisiongreatagain

I miss good songs. 2016 is one of the weakest years in ESC history. Far too many dull average songs with silly lyriks. And all this after a very strong year 2015. The top 10 of the last years contest would easily win this years contest.

Especially this year, songs in other languages, not only English.

A trashy epic 10's eurodance banger, but one that is actually good and melodic. Like La La Love (!!! I miss this so much), Ljubav je Svuda, Love Unlimited etc. Give me it! xbow

More ethnic sound. Something like Turkey in 1997 or Armenia 2008.

aef I'm gonna slap you for calling Voda "annoying". But I do miss ethnic sounds, there's a serious homogenisation of music in the contest in recent years. I also miss the Balkan Ballad, it's the best genre of the contest!!

I miss the party-feeling songs like France 2010, Greece 2012, last year's Israeli entry, Azerbaijan 2009... Anything pop-ish and dancy should go. I also miss my beloved joke entries like Ukraine 2007, Lithuania 2010, Montenegro 2012... jury really blowed everything up let's be honest

body in Bulgaria, heart in Greece (^_^)
I miss the trashy slut-pop songs. I get the good trashy vibes only from Sergey Lazarev this year that give me some "Eurovision" feeling. Maybe that's why Russia is my number one atm.
