Faroe Islands: KVF to Apply For European Broadcasting Union Membership

Kringvarp Føroya the Faroese broadcaster will apply for EBU membership before the summer.

The Faroese broadcaster is set to apply for membership of the European Broadcasting Union membership. The CEO of KVF said in an interview with the broadcaster that:

“Our ultimate aim with this application is independent Faroese participation in the Eurovision Song Contest

EBU membership is the first step. If we succeed with that, our next aim is Eurovision. This contest is currently for independent states only, but perhaps we can obtain some sort of associate membership first, and then we can work from there. By next spring, I expect we will have a much clearer idea of our chances.”

The Faroe Islands is part of the Danish realm and is an autonomous country. The Faroe Islands is self governing in almost all areas and is per definition eligible to become an EBU member.

The broadcasters push for EBU membership and Eurovision participation comes after the Faroe Islands had its first singer in the contest this year. Reiley represented Denmark in Liverpool with “Breaking My Heart” but failed to qualify for the Grand Final.

I mean, why not? If Denmark has nothing to object, I will be fine with them entering the contest...

Yeah, they're technically their own country so why not. Bring along Greenland as well while you're at it!

Though given what the broadcaster's spokesperson says in the end of the article ("By next spring, I expect we will have a much clearer idea of our chances"), it seems like we shouldn't expect to see them at next year's contest already.

Apparently, a "5 year support" is necessary for being considered an active EBU member (at least when it comes to the Faroe Islands).
Their broadcaster KVF still progress with their plans to become a member and take part in Eurovision

The Faroe Islands continues to work on plans to see its broadcaster KVF, gain membership in the European Broadcasting Union. KVF reported that at least five years’ worth of support will be required to gain membership of the organisation.

EBU membership fees will be significant for the broadcaster, with an estimated one-off payment of 1.5 Million Kr (201,000 Euro), with an additional 500,000 Kr (67,000 Euro) membership fee each year. Participation in the Eurovision Song Contest would cost a significant amount with participation fees, costs staying in the host city and the cost of staging its performance.
