Re: Ugaly - The Retrospective (NSC 50 NF)

Ugaly, that smelly little oddball nation by the western coast of the Northern Continent, has been an everlasting presence in the Nation Song Contest ever since its fourth edition. For years, it has seen many other nations, contestants and winners come, go and stay. It has presented the contest with ultimate showdowns, beautiful disasters, disgusting carnivals, bananas making contact (in more ways than one) and even pornography. 30 NSC-world orbits ago, it also got the chance to the invite the contest around to its home. Ugaly has gone through hectic years of joy, tears, pride, regret, excitement, monophonic life, keelhauling, trying hard to look like Gary Cooper and at least seventeen other emotions. And no matter what may have happened along the way, Ugaly doesn't look for bad guys, we've enjoyed every second of it and hope to continue at least until the year 2525!

As the Nation Song Contest reaches its 50th edition, Ugaly desires to provide some celebration of their own. Something that lets Ugaly show off some of their nearly as long history as a part of the long-lived contest. For this reason, Ugly broadcaster Lurkovision has decided to do something unusual for the special occasion. They've decided that Ugaly's 47th entry will, for the first time in 39 editions, be selected by a national final!

In this very special national final, five previous NSC contestants from Ugaly have been chosen for a second chance to represent the nation. The artists come from vastly different time periods, but they were all chosen as some of the most forgotten or underappreciated representants throughout the nation's history, ones that have received sparse attention since their original appearances, but will gladly come back for another go.

To see the artists' original entries for Ugaly, click the small polaroids next to the banners.
Without further ado, let's get rocked!

The B-52s (or as they were known back then: The B-52's) were picked to represent Ugaly in NSC 12 on very short notice. Straight after Kabát and the previously last NF-decided edition, Lurkovision were fresh out of ideas. Some panic searching led to the recruition of this wacky American group and their distinct "call and response" style, a groundbreaking act for the whole alternative scene, famous for songs like Love Shack or indeed the eventual NSC entry Rock Lobster. Even though their high point was during the 80s, The B-52s are still going strong, and will prove it by participating with one of their most recent pieces, Pump, demonstrating their impressive ability to mix their old trademark style with modern instrumentation and sound. The B-52s are back for revenge, and they've been pumped up for the purpose!

The Dutch-born Swedish poet and composer Cornelis Vreeswijk competed for Ugaly in NSC 18, the very first edition with double semifinals and one edition prior to the famous global European events. Balladen om herr Fredrik Åkare och den söta fröken Cecilia Lind, which sources claim is the NSC entry with the all-time longest song title ever, was a calm piece with its melody taken from the traditional American song Monday Morning, lyrically showing a lot of Cornelis' inspiration from the legendary Swedish 18th century composer Carl Michael Bellman. Cornelis has returned with Till Jack, a harmonic song dedicated to his son Jack, but with dark wartime lyrics not at all reminiscent of the title. Despite spending the last 22 years in a slightly inconvenient medical condition most commonly known as death, Cornelis Vreeswijk gladly accepted this chance to return to the NSC stage, riding on a new wave of Swedish folk music in Ugaly!

The massive popularity of British television series Doctor Who in Ugaly is no secret, and in NSC 22 Lurkovision decided to show it off by sending Murray Gold with orchestra to the contest in Jastistia. Murray Gold has been the composer and arranger of all incidental music in the show, commonly performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, since its revival in 2005. The original participation was with the song Doomsday, the sad, touching piece from the 2006 series 2 finale of the same name, featuring wordless vocals by English soprano Melanie Pappenheim. The new selection is a more dramatic and brooding piece. This is Gallifrey: Our Childhood, Our Home is from the three-part finale of the third series from 2007, used in the episodes The Sound of Drums and Last of the Time Lords. Never has the old William Hartnell quote from The Dalek Invasion of Earth been more appropriate for Murray Gold; "One day, I shall come back..."

YouTube Poop is a popular trend with users of the successful video site, crazy and often random edits of cartoons and video game cutscenes. One of the highest regarded Poop-creators around is igiulamam, also known as oiramapap, who creates music in the same crazy manner using the same common source material. This YouTuber was a sudden selection for Ugaly in the 34th edition, participating with It's From the Show, a Poop of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons featuring the potent Dr. Ivo Robotnik on fun adventures. Not much is known about the person behind igiulamam, but it's rumored to be a teenager from Germany, possibly female. For this second go, igiulamam contributes with a musical creation derived from Super Mario World cartoons, Go, Yoshi, Go! (Killer Weeds and Pebble Peas!). Like all YouTube Poop music, this song is a rather whimsical piece, but with plenty of charm and catchiness to capture the attention igiulamam needs for a triumphant return!

Raubtier, the industrial metal band from the far north of Sweden, knew very well what was coming for them when they entered with Kamphund during the turbulence of NSC 42, and Ugaly and Lurkovision knew it too. But they all also knew it was Raubtier's turn to shine, to show the NSC world that this is what Ugaly loves, and we don't care if it doesn't work for you, as long as we get to do our thing! Despite holding the national bottom record of received points, this mentality remains, and the group is not hesitant to give it another go. Achtung Panzer is of similar style to the preceding entry, and will be presented with the same fierce enthusiam. Raubtier is back, and they're growling of hunger! Who will be their prey?

For your convenience, you can also listen to the songs through this YouTube playlist:

Five artists are eager for a new attempt on the NSC stage, but only one of them can receive the golden ticket.
To vote in this NF, simply send a list of your ranking of all five songs, best to worst, in a PM to Fearnavigatr.
The provisional deadline for voting is Thursday, March 25, 23:59 CET.

Take some painkillers, shout at the devil, but don't run away! Ugaly needs your support!

Re: Ugaly - The Retrospective (NSC 50 NF)

To give a small update, six sets of rankings have been received so far, very nice!

It should be said that Ugaly does not intend to continue with national finals after this, so this is a rare opportunity for your merit list in NSC history.
