Re: My personal retrospective charts (1999)

Jane Mcdonald number 3 I'm very much a fan of her music. Also, Steps were my favourite group when I was a child. I still own all their albums today on cd. My favourite Steps song is their cover of Bananarama's "Last Thing On My Mind", which they released in 1998.

Great to see your charts. Such a delightful time the year 1999 was for pop music.

Re: My personal retrospective charts (1999)

'Erase Rewind' - 2 weeks in chart
    Peak position # 37 - 14.03.1999 (Week # 11)

I didn't say anything about my sources and rules for this chart in the first post, maybe it will be interesting for the followers.

    1. For this retrospective I use the singles charts from fourteen countries : United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Netherlands (Top 100), Belgium, Denmark (from danskehitlister.dk, possibly it's not official chart), United States (Billboard Hot 100).

    2. Also I add the songs from the national pre-selections for Eurovision Song Contest.

    3. Only singles are available. So there is no place for album tracks and B-sides. I did the exclusion only for Eurovision related songs, not all from them were singles, especially the entries from small countries and Eastern Europe. For simple Russia and Lithuania never have the singles market.

    4. I didn't include some country songs from Billboard 100 in my chart, because they didn't have physical release, only airplay on radio stations.

    5. It's very rare thing, but I will exclude the singles from popular artists without any official video. I did it for Ace of Base - Everytime It Rains, as I remember Shania Twain also didn't have the official videos for late "Come On Over" singles.

OK you're probably right, maybe it was one of these slow performers and I think it surely aged well. In retrospect to me it's a true mega hit, but it could also be a local effect.

    edit:
Just FYI it was also the soundtrack to the movie The Thirteenth Floor from the same year.

Re: My personal retrospective charts (1999)

Great list, 1999 was a brilliant year for music and just everything

Anyone obsessed with this CD back in the day or was it just me? :3

I didn't watch Eurovision back in 1999 so don't know any of the songs of that year. As for other music, I remember that year as being the last year when "tapes" (as we called them here) were still going quite strong, after that it was only CD's really... the last tape I have is from 1999 (Bring It All Back).

1999 was the year my favourite band S Club 7 started, so obviously, their first four singles (all released that year) are some my favourites (although unlike most people I actually prefer their later material):
    1 "S Club Party" (UK #2)
2 "Bring It All Back" (UK #1)
    3 "Two In A Million" (UK #2)
    4 "You're My Number One" (UK #2)

My other favourites of that year were:
1 Britney Spears "Sometimes" (UK #3)
2 Britney Spears "Baby One More Time" (UK #1)
    3 Steps "Tragedy" (UK #1)
4 Eiffel 65 "Blue Da Ba Dee" (UK #1)
5 Backstreet Boys "I Want It That Way" (UK #1)
    6 Cher "Believe" (UK #1)
    7 5ive "Keep On Movin'" (UK #1)
8 Ricky Martin "Livin' la Vida Loca" (UK #1)
9 The Corrs "Runaway" (UK #49)
10 Westlife "Flying Without Wings" (UK #1)
11 Fatboy Slim "Praise You" (UK #1)

A few were released 1998 but were big all through 1999.

Ahh I remember Summer 1999 Bank Holiday in Blackpool... the big total eclipse and dancing to "Tragedy" at the caravan site disco... good times!
