Oslo 1996 - Post your top 23 (should be 30, read inside)

So the weird thing about this year's edition was that there was a pre-qualifying leg in which every country competed minus the host. What was really odd was that this pre-qualifying was not performed/broadcasted, it didn't even take place. A set of national juries listened to the audio versions of the songs and then decided which final 22 would join Norway that year. Must have felt pretty unfair for the countries left out, not to even have the chance to perform in front of an international audience after going through all the trouble of hosting the internal qualifiers. Apparently this had already happened before in 1993.

I was going to post the top 30 still, as the performance videos for the countries who did not qualify are in YouTube, but midway through the entry for Denmark the video got bogus. All other video versions (that I know of) seem to have the same problem. There's a full audio version but I take EuroVISION literally. The visual part plays half of the interest in the whole event and it'd be unfair to be comparing an entry for which I haven't seen the full performance to the ones that I have seen. So unless you know better, post your top 23.

One of the best years ever! I have SO many all-time favorites here, it's crazy. It was also insanely hard to rank my top 12. The only one I'm really sure about is my number one, the other 11 songs in my top could easily change positions if I ranked them another day. Oh yeah, I also decided to rank all 30 songs, instead of the 23 that qualified.

Haha! I love it, but not as much as the other ones above it. The verse is a bit meh for me, but the chorus obviously makes up for it.

There's nothing meh about this wonderful song imo, but I must accept your point of view.

Well compared to the chorus the verse is a bit meh, but I wouldn't say that it's bad. Just not as good.

    Sounds slightly better now.

Well it's good to confirm that you keep having the song in your VIP area. *even if with an outrageously low number of hearts *

1996 was a good year, I love my top 10 here. But there is just one song that I adore too much...and it is from my own country.

I think Kvalifikacija za Millstreet, on 3 April 1993 at the RTV SLO Broadcasting Centre in Ljubljana, Slovenia, was a televised contest in which the artists from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia performed live. However I think it was only broadcast in those 7 countries and a few others.

Am I right in thinking that the EBU's original plan for ESC 1996 was to relegate the bottom 6 or 7 of ESC 1995 (Germany, Hungary, Portugal, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Poland and perhaps also Russia) from ESC 1996, and allow Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia and Switzerland (who had to sit out ESC 1995) back for ESC 1996? The book "The Eurovision Song Contest: The Official History" by John Kennedy O'Connor (2005 and 2010 editions) states, in its ESC 1996 chapter, "Primarily to appease Germany, who had been relegated from the contest after their poor showing in 1995, all interested parties were invited to select a song that would take part in a preliminary audio-only competition ..." From what I can gather of all that, it appears to me that Germany's broadcaster must have been dissatisfied by being forced to sit out ESC 1996 just for having finished last in with just 1 point in ESC 1995, and hence the EBU came up with the audio qualifier concept as a replacement to the relegation system. It's just unfortunate that, after all that, Germany still failed to qualify from the audio qualifier, and that Denmark who finished 5th in 1995 (well above the relegation zone) were also eliminated in the 1996 audio quailfier. Looking on the bright side, Portugal, who would have been one of the 6 or 7 relegated from ESC 1996, actually passed the audio qualifier and achieved its best placing to-date, 6th place, in ESC 1996.
