If anyone here was following telenovela Rubi might know for Barbara. I love that one so much. That telenovela changed my mind on bad characters in telenovelas, movies, and tv shows in general. Because Rubi was negative one but I have never looked at her as complete negative, just as someone who didn't have lucky in life and was unhappy. I'm not like her (I mean her character Rubi and I don't have same life goals like her) but I like how she thinks sometimes and I use (especially before) to doing some of her motions. xrofl2 xrollinglol

telenovelas are the ones with hundreds of episodes. i think.
soap operas are shorter and the story isn't that streched. i think.

Hm... but if you say "I don't understand what the problem with him is" it doesn't sound correct at all :? You'd rather say "I don't understand what is the problem with him". Or maybe, the second sentence is used in everyday speech, and the first one in formal speech. TBH, I don't know that, but the first sentence sounds really bad to me.

Well yes, but I would be careful with saying what "should" be used, because it only should be use in formal letters, and other documents. Yet, everyday speech is widely used by all people around the world, most of the time.

No, it's not about formality, it's about using the correct structure Adel. The one you used is for direct questions, it's not to be used with indirect questions. I' thought that was kinda obvious. But I'm not trying to say whatever you think I am in a negative way. But that's the way things are. Oral speech is not always the correct speech.

Look, it's proved that if most people use a specific structure in oral speech, then this structure becomes a correct one IN ORAL SPEECH. Languages evolve and new structures are formed. The "correct" structure is still correct, but becomes underused due to various factors.

I had many of those for more than four years (with English native speakers, mind you) and an intense teacher training which wasn't pleasant at all xshrug I don't think what just happened with your structure is different. It's just an indirect question like those other examples I've posted. In oral speech we're able to find questions like: You know about that? We all use those structures but we know that in a question verbs like know need the auxiliary 'to do' and it's simply 'forgotten' in most of what is written and said. But it isn't correct at all. But I think it's better we move forward and forget this whole discussion. :p :p :D :D

It is correct in oral speech, in written/formal it isn't. I said why that happened. The same goes for using singular in the place of plural for example: "Where is my documents". Of course, any linguistic institute will say that it isn't correct, but we're talking about practical language use.

It isn't correct at all (I won't even say why it isn't correct). It's not because you use it that it is correct. There are grammar rules that you can't simply ignore because others do it or because it's commonly used. Correct grammar is not for formal language. Correct grammar is there to be used and period. xshrug

I don't know if you knew this, but slang and other forms of oral speech are specific fields in linguistics, they aren't researched in terms of grammar, but in terms of usage. Anyway, you seem to be unaffected by my previous comments on this subject, so I won't continue it, because it's pointless. I'm gonna stick to what I learned from people with academic titles.

It would be curious if daniels or Hele. got offended by what you say about their written English or Lak or even others by the corrections you've made to their written structures. As I said before you can have it your own way since you also seem unaffected by my previous comments. I can only tell you that my knowledge about English is not some primary knowledge , it might be not as fluent or flawless as someone who is bilingual, but I certainly know much more than most could think, I've studied hard to achieve that and I also lived for almost four years in a country where English is widely spoken, at least I got in touch with people who speak it fluently and in the Education area. I try to use it as grammatically correct as possible, but I sometimes use oral speech, despite the trauma I've been through in the teacher training! xrofl2

Well, I use oral slang speech a lot when speaking casually. And I use the "correct" forms when writing essays, and formal letters.

I wouldn't say that it is wrong, but it would be good if they established a universal consensus concerning that issue. It's also because I've studied to be a teacher that I've been taught the most radical theories I suppose, to able to teach it the best way I can... xshrug

As a teacher you're only learning official rules of teaching, because at High School, you don't teach slang or casual speech, you only teach formal or the so-called "correct" speech.

Yes, but we were always told and taught those were the rules to follow to speak English correctly and I kinda agree with that.

But anyway, changing the subject, I decided to have a NF to choose my entry for the WORLDVISION contest after all!

That's right, you were taught that - in contrast to how most of the people speak, and in my opinion, it is wrong. One should distinguish when it is appropriate to use "correct" speech and casual speech.
