Which cannot be said the same about Poland - once there were 2 girls who tried to ask about a specific location, and the information lady was asking her friend the whole time how to translate sentences, and had a really crappy accent - her friend had better English, but not good nonetheless. It was so embarrassing

PS. I could help them, but I didn't know the location of their destination in the first place xrofl2

In Croatia, all people who work in hotels, etc. know English very well . And lot of people also know it.

Jim
4th August 2012, 23:13
Also in Greece, many people and especially almost all the young people know very well the English language and not only. We have also many speakers of the German, French, Italian and of other important languages too.

In every country the hotel staff has to speak English, but I'm not talking about this, I'm talking about the general population, and in Poland this isn't good at all!

It would be fine with me if Belarus or Slovakia were last.

it sounds stupid. it's way too long, for start.
it comes from "za ruke" which would be "for hands", like giving your hand to some1 or something like that.
however, "zaručnik", if we break it down, can be "za ručnik" which would mean "for a towel" X-OI

In Polish we say zaręczony/zaręczona for people who are engaged, so it's more or less the same, and the etymology is the same.
As for the towel - we have the word ręcznik, the spelling is different, and the phonetics are different so you really cannot confuse those two xrofl2
