I say this name every year, but I'll try again: Marit Larsen!

It would be something different for Norway and I really think that she could do well - with a good song, ofc. "If a song could get me you" would be perfect!

Some other names: Marion Raven, Reidun Seather, Anine Stang, Atle Pettersen, Babel Fish, Hanne Soorvag and the comeback of Maria Haukaas Storeng. I really love Tone Damli Aberge's music as well, but she's not really good live..

A norwegian artist with a musical cred such as Marit Larsen or Donkeyboy would never take part in a kitchfest like MGP if that artist would like to be taken seriously by the music industry in the future.

I don't get it. "Everyone" seems to crave something from Norway like Alvedansen. Why? We have tried that already, and failed terribly. Helene Bøksle is another folk singer who is famous in nov-dec here because she can sing christmas songs. Neither Alvedansen or artists like Helene Bøksle represent the kind of music the majority of musicians in Norway likes to make, or listen to. It's time to move forward, try new things, and quit repeting mistakes we made in the past.

I just hope the new guy that will take over Per Sundnes job will do a better job when pre-selecting songs for the semi final, and ban those hideous swedish songwriters who regurgitates different versions of the same crap every year, forever. They have caused us two last places so far, hope the lesson has been learned.

Donkeyboy would be my number one favourite to join the ESC. But there are many others that I would happily see represent Norway as well. If a newcomer is to represent Norway again, I dont mind - as long as she or he is a quality singer (the last two years the vocals of our representatives have been way below standard) with a good song.

Their supposed 'copycat' had a much better entry than Saade had though, so if they send a 'copy' of Loreen with a much better entry than hers... I'd say bring on the copy!

Jokes aside, I hope for a local/ethno- inspired ballad/midtempo entry in Norwegian. Their 2006 entry was sooo underrated (imo the best Norwegian entry to date), 'Vardlokk' was robbed in 2011 NF in favor of that 'Haba Haba' joke and 'Si' deserved a much better outcome than being stuck in its semi in the national selection 2012.

I'm no fan of boyband music, but last year Christian Ingebrigtsen wrote a really good song for Nora Foss Al Jabri, so there are three things that says a1 to Malmø:
1) Christian Ingebrigtsen writes good songs always fighting in the top
2) AND he has submittet to the national final several times. I can't see why he won't do it again.
2) Ben Adams is riding on a popularity wave here in Norway, he came in second in "dancing with the stars", TV-audience really likes him, something that would win votes for a1. They would actually be stupid not to take advantage of that.

But hey, we could do worse than sending A1, we could send Tooji one more time xcrazy

I remember A1 from early 00s when they were kinda popular, but haven't heard any recent song of them to see how they are now. Smells like "Blue #2", and boybands/girlbands don't do well in ESC usually. Many times they are not so good live vocalists or they have at least weak vocal performances (Blue & No Angels come to mind) and they are something juries usually hate. Blue came 5th in the public vote, 18th in the juries.

Two years ago, when A1 finished second in the MGP, they had a plain boyband-song. Uptempo, kind of catchy, but nothing special. Their advantage is that Christian Ingebrigtsen is a really good songwriter, and he's come a long way in a short time and is developing quialities as a musician and composer at an amazing speed. If he delivers something as good as he wrote for Nora last year, and Ben switches on hos charm-button, A1 might get the comeback they want so badly :) We'll see in january if I'm spychic or not :)

I welcome all three, they are certainly a step up from mass-produses swede-crap. Carina Dahl (who can ever forget her "Guns and boys" a few years back), will also be there, as will Anine Stang and a bunch of more or less anonymous artists: Grand Prix-aktuelle - VG Nett (http://www.vg.no/bildespesial/spesial.php?id=9633)
I will not be surprised if we send Sirkus Eliassen to Malmø. They are very popular amongst the kids here, and have some of the biggest hits in Norway the last couple of years. They pull a full house whenever they hold a concert, so they are quite a show to look forward to :)

I can't believe that were just over a week from the first Norwegian semi and no artists have leaked. Or have I missed anything?

Tomorrow (Wednesday) the first 7 artists in Melodi Grand Prix 2013 will be presented. Apparently there will be 21 acts in total, divided in 3 heats (thus 7 acts/heat). Each Wednesday 7 new acts for each semi-final will be presented. There will be 10 acts in the final, somehow accomplished.

January 19, Steinkjer - semi-final 1
January 26, Florø - semi-final 2
February 2, Larvik - semi-final 3
February 9, Oslo - Final

However the newspaper VG Nett claims there are tumult among the artists and their agents:

Rumour has it Aleksander Rybak has written a song for a young x-factor contestant, Annsofi, who will perform on Saturday 26th in Florø (http://www.vg.no/musikk/grand-prix/artikkel.php?artid=10074028)

Annsofi impressed the judges in x-factor:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UR3tJ1Qqto

 at the video though... she say she's having her own style and that the glove is inspired by Michael Jackson??? She basically rips-off Madonna's look for her infamous Like a Virgin performance @ VMA... girl is either in denial or clueless.

Anyhooo... still interested what Rybak could have in store for us with this girl. As for her singing in this clip... it starts off good then it gets pretty bad... but I'm curious how this generic wail voice can be combined with Rybak's ethno style?

Interesting actually, I hope it'll be in Norwegian. Alexander Rybak is very focused on ethno-pop, and has a feeling for melodies and instrumentation, so it could turn out good. I won't let myself get too high hopes, but atleast it looks good on paper.

I agree; Rybak does have a feeling for melodies and instrumentation. One can just hope he is not the one to write the lyrics, though. Because he certaintly does NOT have any feeling for the lyrics; which most of the times seem to be something written by a young teenager with a very limited english vocabulary...

I agree! That's part of the reason why I'm not such a big fan of "Fairytales" for instance. His lyrics are really juvenile, perhaps in Norwegian it would be better perhaps? But as a composer it could turn out good, because he really have sense for melodies and instrumentation (as pointed out).

^ Yes this is truly amazing, the first real serious metal music attempt on ESC. The vocals of Emil Solli-Tangen is great and the "beauty and the beast" - idea behind the song is interesting. Still, I'm not fully convinced, it didn't blow my mind in any way. Gromth is Norwegian Black metal (although they label themselves as "Extreme symphonic metal"), read more at Encyclopaedia Metallum (http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Gromth).

Anyway, Gromth is on Spotify including Alone (http://open.spotify.com/track/0vmv1oeSIyU0l20JQ3Twqd)

edit (free translation of article from newspaper VG Nett):

- Our music embrace Emil's vocals and the door has been open for a collaboration a long time now, says vocalist Ole Karlsen to VG Nett.

The band consists of vocalist Ole Karlsen, drummer Tjodalv (Kenneth Åkesson), bassist Grimd, guitarist Kjell Aage "Damage" Karlsen and André Aaslie on piano and vocals. They describe their music as black metal, but with a lot of orchestration and symphonic elements.

- We hope we can reach a broader and larger audience. Of course it's not a sure thing, but we have faith we will qualify to the Oslo Spectrum show.

Gromth is pretty interesting - but I agree with Laleh; the song was lacking something. I actually think it is the operatic part that should be more melodious and have a stronger melody. After a couple of listenings I find the combination of the two genres really cool, but I really cant remember anything. I will give it a couple of more listenings though. And it might sound amazing live! Or it may totally crash live... lol...

Am I the only crazy, bizarre person out there that really, really, REALLY (emphasize on the really) wants to see Marika Lejon enter again!? I just think her unique and deliciously quirky gypsy pop songs are the most weirdly infectious things ever. It's like a dangerous mix of folk, schlager and eccentricity. My ranking of yesterday´s heat:

1. Datarock - The underground
2. Gromth & Emil Solli-Tangen - Alone
3. Julie Bergan - Give a little something back
4. Vidar Busk - Paid my way
5. Mimi Blix - Catch me
6. Tom Hugo - Det er du
7. Carina Dahl - Sleepwalking

Ok, two of my three favorites passed the heat, but I didn´t like much songs yesterday.

I listened to Gromth beforehand and really liked their album The Immortal. I also enjoyed the voice of Emil Solli-Tangen, but somehow they failed to put it all together. 'Alone' is written by Gromth to be used in cooperation with Emil, so they had all chances to bring something really epic. I'm disappointed and didn't Ole Karlsen miss the growl several times? Wasn't he clearly off-beat? Hopefully they will transform this mess to something enjoyable in Spektrum.

This is why I sometimes get irritated by Eurovision. The music tastes of some people in Europe is quite frankly....barmy!

Well, I am able to tell when someone is singing in tune or not, it seems many people here are not. And most songs are sung in English so it's easier for native English speakers to detect terrible lyrics.

You stated on one of the previous pages that you thought everything in the heat was rubbish besides Carina Dahl. Well at least the "rubbish" that dared to be something a little different went through in the show. I can agree that it wasn't a very good heat at all but i'd much rather stuff thats at least a little daring be reward (the three that went through) than bland stuff made from the current cookie cutter of the month (the other four).

As for the singing in tune.. well it's a song contest. I imagine people are voting for the songs they like rather than listening with very precise ears for any slightly out of tune moments and thinking "THATS IT!!! I'm voting for someone else now!". Carina Dahl's vocals were not the hottest ever if I were to judge in that department.

Hopefully we both find something we really like succeed in the next heat.

There is definitely something wrong with you if you thought that any of those acts that went through were different or daring. It just tells me how little you know nothing about music. You think that fusion is daring? I am assuming you are in large part referring to Gromth & Emil Solli-Tangen. You couldn't possibly be referring to the other 2, surely - both of those songs are ridiculously dated and these types of songs are regularly featured in Scandinavaian national final selections. Look them up! I'm not going to do it for you.

I am not championing Carina Dahl. It was a very average song but it was the only song that flowed well, had a decent tune and held together enough for it to be a credible performance. Nobody would vote for her on vocal ability alone, but she didn't make a mess of it like Julie Bergan did. I had to put my hands over my ears. She just couldn't cope with the song.

As for the other 2 - Mimi Blix's song was totally disjointed and badly produced. It also failed to work on stage and didn't really reel you in at any point. I lost interest with the ridiculous Tom Hugo song during the first of many sections of pretend whistling. (embarrassing)

One final point, why do you equate different with good?

Oh yes indeed, there must be something wrong with me... Anyway I listen to many different types of music outside of Eurovision from experimental jazz, neofolk, chamber pop, experimental to weird, very difficult to listen to avant-garde offerings which i'm quite certain you'd run a mile from. I know quite a bit about music i'd say, although I would not need to prove it to you. Whatever you choose to think about my knowledge of music, I do not care in the slightest. You don't know me, I don't know you so I shan't judge although it often seems easy to.

The passing acts from that heat were hardly revolutionary sure but they fall outside of typical mainstream tastes of today anyway. Gromth & Emil Solli-Tangen especially. The other two as well to a smaller degree. You can tell this just by looking at the upset the results have caused to some people who were championing the female pop acts of the night. I know the two songs were "dated" (I hate that word). Whats wrong with being "dated" however? Thats another reason why i'm happy to see them go through. They didn't seem to be pack followers.

Yes Carina Dahl's song was average. Ok for what it was I suppose. It's not a crime that it didn't pass to the final.

Why do I equate different with good? Well different doesn't always mean good. In a sea of mediocre however, I think different is worth more.

Shouldn't you be more irritated with the selection the public had to choose from rather than what they put through (and what fans like here)? Because if you were not even madly keen on Carina Dahl's song, I do not see the problem really and your need to question the taste of people and in my case, my sanity. Thank you very much.

Don't forget that MGP in Norway isn't just about the music. I love the show, but I don't listen to MGP/ESC music outside the contest, and I think most norwegians have the same feelings about the contest as I have. It's a massive kitch-fest, so I am not surprised at all to see the most spectacular shows/act go through. Pretty girls with a 20 on the dozen kind of popsong is not our style, we leave that for the southern/eastern europeans :) I also think the demography of the MGP/ESC viewers are people my age. Married with children, stuck at home with the family on a saturday night :)

By the way, new rumours about the upcoming semi on Saturday. Lucky Lips, a bluegrass band with a 24 year old redhead singing is rumoured to compete, and also Margareth Berger, an Norwegian Idol runner up, who just happens to release a new single called "I feed you my love" on wednesday. Personally I don't find any of those two even remotely interesting.

Norway does the complete opposite to Denmark ! Denmark has almost 10 similar songs while Norway as very strange entries I can't classify in a genre...

I don't have any real crush but the one I prefer for the moment may be Martin Blomvik...

Annsofi ballad seems very bland...

Margareth Bergers song sounded like it could have been a Bond-song from the 90's, almost as if Garbage and Depeche Mode had a baby girl :) I kind of liked it, but not 100% sure it will go through to the final. Hanks song is a timeless "4 chords of power". It always works, it's pleasant in the ear, cool dude singing, it is fun to see the softer side to Hank von Helvete. My favourite so far, but then again I have such a soft spot for guys like Bryan Adams and Richard Marx who can do such a song a lot better. But still, for a MGP or ESC song, it's good. I am sure it will be voted to the final, we all love Hank :)
I was hoping Annsofis song would be better, but she sounded like a chainsaw, not good at all, but I am sure plenty of people will vote for it anyway. The rest of the songs didn't stand out at all.
