Sending Nina Zilli to ESC is a dream that comes true. She's the perfect singer to represent Italy in a song contest. Thus, it will be very difficult to find another one next year.

Maybe the best thing to do is to send someone completely different in style, like Caparezza:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owApENJbkaU

or Subsonica:

Does anyone have the TV ratings for the final ? Because I know that in 2011, it was catastrophic. If it keeps being a real flop in Italy and if the country doesn't manage to win in the following years, maybe they'll withdraw ?

They left the contest after ending up in 4th place - I don't think being in top 10 two years in a row means anything to RAI

drago120
27th May 2012, 17:35
Rai does not matter to the final classification, which classifies 1 ° or 26 ° makes no difference!
Interested in listening to Rai, the ESC in Italy makes an audience too low.
Rai will only do so if he withdraws because in Italy the Eurovision song contest, unfortunately, nobody cares! :(
I used google translate sorry but I find it difficult to make a speech without it :D

That is indeed not a lot. Even here in The Netherlands where Eurovision is not very popular we still had 1.063.000 = 22.1% viewers.

Franco
31st May 2012, 00:05
That is indeed not a lot.

Yep! Sixth most viewed show of the night. Right behind:
"Deal or no deal" - quiz show - 20.89%
"Billy Elliot" - movie - 11.52%
"The Mask 2" - movie - 9.69%
"The Mentalist" - TV series - 9.21%
"Goldfinger" - movie - 7.76%

It will take some time to make ESC as big as it is everywhere else. :(

So even with an entry and a singer (Nina Zilli) that was bound to bring a top 10 result to Italy according to most bookmakers and polls, Italy has no real interest in ESC? That's really surprising. I think The Netherlands would die for such an entry.

It's an unfortunate pairing of a singer that tries so hard to impress with her powerful voice that she ends up drowning the melody with her scream and of lyrics full of dull rhetoric.

While we're on the 90's theme and Italian acts... I would have loved to see Gala back on the music scene.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUDSTQxifsk

And nearly 10 years after "Freed from desire" she released this one... which is a surprisingly good pop track considering she's now a forgotten ex-euro dance act, now independent (she runs her own company) without any big company supporting her. Is there any future for her on the Italian market? She's based in NYC (I dunno if she was during the 90's aswell)... but considering Alexia seems to have faired relatively well after her 90's Euro-dance years (solo and as part of Ice MC), is there a chance for Gala?

I dobut that Gala joins at ESC, since in Italy was forgetten about her, but not about his songs..

The only electro-dance singer who is popular here is Benny Benassi :) Maybe he can be in ESC in the future :)

I will not DEAL with ageism, just like I will never DEAL with racism, to me it's equally bad.

Now you obviously didn't get my point, I'm not saying that all Italy has to offer are these names (I'm not sure I mentioned any of them even? perhaps Pausini), and I definitely don't want Italy to send a 20 year old sound...

What I reacted against is your ageism, that all artists has to be young and new and that there should be no room for anyone over (25?). Now taste differs, but I think experience is also a good thing, and that doesn't have to be someone being 40, but I prefer established acts over someone just entering a Idol/The Voice contest with zero personality.

But for your info, there are established acts in their early 20's aswell.

Hopefully you understand my point now, is that I'm opposing ageism, not different taste...

A new: if Italy will participe and if the singer will be chosen among Festival di Sanremo's singers, I can say you that the singer will be at least 18 years old... because for participing to next festival di sanremo, singer must be at least 18.

I still find Per Sempre and Ninas performance of that song outstanding! I really think Italy would have been in top 3 if the song wasnt changed. But anyway - I am starting to get over that disgrace (gradually).
I would love to see something a bit more contemporary from Italy next year, though. It guess it would do good for the interest of the italian public if Italy participated with a song that actually managed to be a hit in the home country.

Fabio Fazio changed rules. Apart from the rule of singers with an age of at least 18, he said that evey singer will participe to the final, because every singer will take 2 songs in Sanremo festival... saw that nobody will be eliminated (but only 1 of 2 songs taken by every singer), maybe also singers more important will participe, because they won't cut a sorry figure (anyway they'll be in the final). Besides Fazio's interviews give good hopes for next sanremo, while last festivals werw a bit unsatisfying with Gianni Morandi's presentation.

Don't think so. Only in 2011 did they openly say the act would come from the Giovani section. 2012 was guess work I believeNo. they never said anything about ESC in Sanremo rules. We knew how the entry would have been selected only in separate communications.

Sanremo is NOT a NF, not yet at least. All the people working on Sanremo 2013 in RAI at the moment (half of RAI, maeby) probably are not even thinking about ESC. They probably don't even know what it is. The ones who, maybe, will work on ESC (a dozen people, maybe) will have to go there, explain them all and begging them to choose someone.

That's how it works here in Italy. RAI won't even publish anything form his press office regarding ESC: we will know from EBU if Italy is in or out, as it happened in the last two years. :(

Matt
27th September 2012, 23:41
This is such a shame. I mean I'm glad that Italy returned (for now) but you would think that with proper promotion, the contest could become somthing relevant again. I mean 2 great results in a row isn't too shabby.

SimoneMLK
27th September 2012, 23:54
RAI stopped considering ESC relevant in the '80s.
I read an interview to our HoD where he answered to the question "Why so little promotion of ESC on RAI?" His answer was: "Because, for RAI, ESC is a program just like any other one".

Sanremo is probably the biggest event in RAI, for whatever reason. Everybody hates it (it's long, neverending, boring, with awful songs), but every year the viewing figures are very high, mostly because other channels don't even try to broadcast something good, 'cause they know they will lose against Sanremo, so they broadcast something else (movies from the '80s! Documentaries) and they lose even harder. In the end, Sanremo is the only thing you can watch on those evenings.
ESC is unknown in Italy to the point that, if you go on Sanremo website, you can find that Raphael participated in the "Eurosong festival", while Nina participated in the "European song contest". They don't even bother to write the correct name!

Jim

Still, I find it hard to believe that they won't choose from Sanremo. Furthermore, it would lack even the publicity that proclaming the italian entry in the last night of Sanremo Festival would give the ESC event.

Obviousley, you'll never see a very famous singer like Pausini, Ramazzotti, etc at esc. But she's quite famous. She's one of the best young italian singer currently, in my opinion. She'd be a good choice, also if she won't win (like in WorldVision :xrofl2). Another good choice would be Annalisa: also if she's from talent show, she's better than Emma, Alessandra Amoroso, etc.
Anyway not always quality choices are popular: think to Chiara Civello, she's a very quality singer, and she was in Big in last sanremo festival, but nobody knows her (also if in Brasil she's very famous)...

Malika's voice is unusual, but when you get used to it, it's ok... and her songs are good.

I really like her voice, I didn't mention it though. But I don't like her songs and her style! So I don't reject her 100%, she might come up with something I'd like... Unlike Marco Mengoni, I can't stand his face, his voice and his songs!

If Sanremo Festival will be delayed after the ESC deadline, the internal jury can still listen to all the songs before the deadline and choose our entry, give EBU the name and wait until Sanremo's last day to proclaim who is the chosen one.

Why Italians hate Anna Tatangelo?

Many Italians see her as a "whore", many people accuse her to have ruined Gigi D'Alessio's family and Italians generally don't like her relationship with Gigi D'Alessio. Many Italians think that his songs are horrible and unoriginal and they think that she can't sing.

I personally don't hate Anna, I think she sings very well and I like many songs from her like: "Ragazza di perfieria", "Il mio amico", "Bastardo" and "Sensi".

Anna Tatangelo is a fine woman and an ok-ish singer, but she's not one we would proudly send abroad as italian music ambassador. That's a role for the brightest and shiniest among the young emerging singers, like Raphael Gualazzi and Nina Zilli.

I think of our entry more as an ambassador than as a contestant, thus he or she will represent Italy not just in the contest, but as living embodiment of italian music.
A long established artist would give the idea of a stagnant musical landscape, clogged and prone to be stereotyped. I like it better to be represented as a constantly renewing spring, while keeping the highest quality standards.

I agree about the ambassador thing, but for the rest I don't agree. Italy sent two quite dated entries in a row, it seems you're youth obsessed because the entries didn't sound "new and fresh", so apparently it's not the songs you care about then more that the acts should be young. Also, shouldn't the entries actually represent the Italian music scene? How is one an ambassador of Italy if they sing a song written by Swedes in English? xshrug

Oh plz, had these entries been sung by older or more established act Franco would called them 'dated'.

2012 as most worldwide hits nowadays? The retro sound was big in 5 years ago, not so much anymore.

But you don't get the discussion, I don't particular hate any of those entries or anything, they're both decent although not really my type. But Franco obsesses about acts being "young and newcomers" but overlook that the styles of songs weren't really "fresh" in the first place. Personally, I don't need an entry to sound fresh to like it, but I think he contradicts himself with those statements.

Frankly, there is no obsession by this side. I merely stated the traits of my ideal ESC entry and there is nothing wrong with that. As for their style, they sound new to me and there is no contradiction in that. Maybe the music context you're accostumed to is so advanced that it's far past this. Among the answers, there are the fact she ruined Gigi D'Alessio's family (he was married with another woman), but if I'm not wrong, she was hated since before it... her style is considered old and her music and lyrics stereotyped.
Personally, I don't like her because she looks antypathic and I don't like a lot her songs, also if I listened worse things.

Fabio Fazio, the host of the 2013 Sanremo Festival, together with Luciana Littizzetto, published last night on his official Twitter account the schedule of the next edition of the contest.

On Tuesday 12 February, 7 of the total 14 acts of the Big (Well known) category will take part to the show, while the other 7 will compete the day after, on Wednesday 13, together with 4 of the total 8 artists of the Giovani (Newcomers) category. The artists of the Big category will sing 2 songs each this year, for the first time in history.

On Thursday 14 February, all the 14 acts of the Big category will be on stage, with the remaining 4 singers of the Giovani category.

Friday and Saturday will be the days of the two finals: on 15 February there will be that of the Giovani category, while the artists of the Big category will sing Italian hits of the past in a night called Sanremo history, whereas on 16 February, the last day, there will be the official announcement of the winner of the Big category.

It is not clear yet when and how RAI Radio Televisione Italiana, the Italian broadcaster of the event, will choose the Italian representative for the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest, neither if the singer will be one of the contestants.

Here following is the complete list of the participants, in alphabetical order:

Big category:

Almamegretta – Mamma non lo sa and Onda che vai
Annalisa – Non so ballare and Scintille
Malika Ayane – Niente and E se poi
Chiara – L’esperienza dell’amore and Il futuro che sarà
Simone Cristicchi – Mi manchi and La prima volta
Elio e le Storie Tese – Dannati forever and La canzone mononota
Max Gazzè – Sotto casa and I tuoi maledettissimi impegni
Raphael Gualazzi – Sai (ci basta un sogno) and Senza ritegno
Marta sui Tubi – Dispari and Vorrei
Marco Mengoni – Bellissimo and L’essenziale
Modà – Come l’acqua dentro il mare and Se si potesse non morire
Simona Molinari e Peter Cincotti – Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide and La felicità
Maria Nazionale – Quando non parlo and È colpa mia
Daniele Silvestri – A bocca chiusa and Il bisogno di te

Giovani category:

Blastema – Dietro l'intima ragione
Il Cile – Le parole non servono più
Irene Ghiotto – Baciami?
Andrea Nardinocchi – Storia impossibile
Antonio Maggio – Mi servirebbe sapere
Ilaria Porceddu – In equilibrio
Renzo Rubino – Il Postino
Paolo Simoni – Le parole

In the Big category, Elio e le Storie Tese and Modà ended runner up in 1996 and 2011 respectively, and Marco Mengoni second runner up in 2010. Simone Cristicchi won the Festival in the same category in 2007 with the song Ti regalerò una rosa, while Raphael Gualazzi won the Giovani category in 2011 with Follie d’amore (Madness of love), picked out as the Italian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest that year, who let him reach an honourable second place in the Grand Final. Maria Nazionale was in the cast of the movie Gomorra (Gomorrah), an international success all over the world.
