Yes, especially with the final placing they got :?, they could have gone for Icelandic all the way.

By the way, what's the point of singing in Icelandic in the national final and then ALWAYS choosing English for Eurovision?

I believe it's stipulated in the rules that all artists have to perform their songs in Icelandic, at least that is what Yohanna said last year which is why she didn't perform in English.

Yup, it's in the rules. It was the same thing with MF until 2001, then 2002 all languages were allowed. I agree with tourem though, it's just stupid to have this rule while they simple translate it to English every year anyways. I mean I like the rule, but then they should keep it in Icelandic aswell, as it is right now it doesn't make much sense to me.

Oh I see, well I'm not sure if they were having that rule every year (apparently not that year). It seems they've been a bit back and forth with that rule, but for the past years it's been consistent.

Well their explanation is that since it is an icelandic contest (apart from also being their NF to pick their ESC entry) they should send the songs in icelandic.

And now the whole forum will start wetting themselves over Yohanna and Birgitta

Johanna is extremely pretty and a good live singer for sure, her ESC entry 2009 was ok... but still a bit generic for my taste. I wasn't really fond of her previous entry in the Icelandic NF though. I'm pretty certain we'll get yet another half- bland ballad that will 100% get translated to English if chosen ... but we'll see, I'm open for a good ballad aswell. I hope they learned something from last year's mess when making an interesting entry bland with translating it however.

As for Birgitta, I never liked her entry (extremely bland!) and to this date I'm surprised at how well it faired. Johanna was also overrated in 2009, but atleast I can understand the appeal there.

I mean Birgitta's song was cr*p to begin with, so based on that entry there's nothing to get excited over... but that's just my opinion of course.

It's human nature, people like familarity so it's just makes sense that returning artists are popular. ESC is the only real big exposure for many artists in smaller countries so I can't really blame them for trying their luck more than just once.

Yohanna's 2009 song was only average to me but the performance was breath taking and she just looked beautiful.
Her 2011 NF song I liked a whole lot better so I expect something similar.

Birgitta's song was one of the better ones in 2003 which was a horrible year, thouh no master piece.

In hindsight, I think his '12 entry was the best in the Icelandic selection that year.

But, then it was also partly copied of Hall & Oates' 'Out of Touch' which I think is a great song.

Had there been semi-finals that year it would certainly qualify. You cant compare a song in 2003 with a song in 2013, the music scene of ESC and Europe in general changed so much....do you think Estonia 2001 would even survive the last place of a semi-final last year?

With that said, her song is probably better than the 2003, which wasn't that bad. Nothing very speciouls, but not bad either.

I’ve listened to all the songs and I must say that Iceland has a very strong selection of songs again. There isn’t even one bad song among them. No wonder that Iceland is one of my favorite participating nations in Eurovision. So many good songs! My biggest favorites are:

- Birgitta Haukdal – ‘Meðal Andanna‘;
- Erna Hrönn Ólafsdóttir – ‘Augnablik‘;
- Jógvan Hansen & Stefanía Svavarsdóttir – ‘Til þín‘;
- Jóhanna Guðrún Jónsdóttir – ‘Þú‘;
- Magni Ásgeirsson – ‘Ekki Líta Undan’
- Sylvía Erla Scheving – ‘Stund Með þér’;
- Eyþór Ingi Gunnlaugsson – ‘Ég á Líf‘.

but I like the other songs too.

Somehow I have a feeling it will go between Birgitta Haukdal and Jógvan Hansen & Stefanía Svavarsdóttir for the Icelandic ticket to Malmo.

Good luck Iceland!

Semi 1

Magni Ásgeirsson- “Ekki Líta Undan” - Hard for me to dislike a good rock song. Not as good as Hugarro, but still excellent. 9/10
Eyþór Ingi Gunnlaugsson- “Ég á Líf” - Emotional ballad, but takes 2 minutes to make an impression. Still good though. 7.5/10
Svavar Knútur Kristinsson and Hreindís Ylva Garðarsdóttir Hólm- “Lífið Snýst ” - Another excellent song. Nice folkie feel to it. Makes me want to do a jig. 9/10
Birgitta Haukdal- “Meðal Andanna” - Oh yes. I could have done without the key change, but otherwise this is right up my alley and a brilliant song. 9.5/10
Edda Viðarsdóttir- “Sá sem Lætur Hjartað Ráða” - Sweet song, very beautiful. A little boring at times, but a nice ending makes up for that. 7.5/10
Jóhanna Guðrún Jónsdóttir (Yohanna)- “Þú” - Garbage. Expected better. 3/10

Semi 2

Erna Hrönn Ólafsdóttir – Augnablik - The only song that brought me back for a second listen. Spectacular. The vocal parts could use a little more punch, but the instrumental section blow my mind, and the final minute is sheer bliss. 10/10
Unnur Eggertsdóttir – Ég Syng! - Groovy song, not necessarily up my musical road, but fun and catchy. Dark horse for the win. 8/10
Klara Ósk Elíasdóttir – Skuggamynd - A little too Junior ESC for me. 5.5/10
Sylvía Erla Scheving – Stund Með þér - Starts off strongly, but takes ages to go anywhere. Solid, but doesn't catch the eye. 7/10
Jógvan Hansen and Stefanía Svavarsdóttir – Til þín - Starts off slowly, but when It hits Its stride, then it is really rather good. 8/10
Haraldur Reynisson – Vinátta - boring, but kind of nice. 5/10

Semi 1 is far better, but Semi 2 has the best song.

So, if I had my way, the final would be :

Magni
Svavar Knútur Kristinsson and Hreindís Ylva Garðarsdóttir Hólm
Birgitta Haukdal
Erna Hrönn Ólafsdóttir
Unnur Eggertsdóttir
Jógvan Hansen and Stefanía Svavarsdóttir

I expect the final to be :

Magni
Yohanna
Birgitta Haukdal
Unnur Eggertsdóttir
Erna Hrönn Ólafsdóttir
Klara Ósk Elíasdóttir

Don't know how the wildcard thing works, so leaving the final at 6.

Once again Iceland leads the way with a high standard of music.

Well... All sounds quite the same... All sounds or like Yohanna or like Sjonni's friends or like Greta & Jonsi... There were better from Iceland, like in 2011 for instance...
I'm convinced that Jogvan Hansen and his fellow will win. It really sounds like an icelandic entry. I hope for Yohanna she won't win because Thu is really under her standards...

My top-3 now
1.Erna Hrönn Ólafsdóttir – Augnablik

3.Magni Ásgeirsson – Ekki Líta Undan

Thú sounds like something that, if it wins, when translated into English, will be one of those Summery songs about some boy Jóhanna likes, kind of a Satellite~vibe. Might be well. Medhal Andanna on the other hand is a bit of a let down. It's a grower, definitely, but it's nowhere near as trad/ethno/less-pop as I was hoping for with a song about spirits. Ég Syng is ok, it's great in comparison to the rest of the songs that I've not mentioned yet, but it's not really strong. Augnablik is really good actually, it was something like this that I was expecting from Medhal Andanna, but this is quite great too!
I'm sure one of those four will be a winner, if not, Iceland will not be in my books this year I feel.

Overall I think all of the songs are pretty good.

Yohanna's song isn't bad, but I wouldn't pick it as a winner if it were up to me. It's her weakest song she has tried with for ESC.

I think Birgitta's song is the most dated in the whole selection. Sounds like something from ESC 1996. Open Your Heart was way better than this.

My initial favourites are Augnablik, Til þín, and Skuggamynd.

Birgitta is Yohanna meets Carola... Songwriters like Jonas Gladnikoff who only compose music for Eurovision are sometimes parodying themselves...

High quality in the Icelandic selection this year! A fantastic heat with all good to very good songs. Here, many countries like f.e. Norway should take note! I hope for this outcome tonight:

To the final:

- Birgitta Haukdal – Meðal andanna (My absolute favorite! What a great song!)
- Eyþór Ingi Gunnlaugsson – Ég á líf (A beautiful and sweet song!)
- Jóhanna Guðrún Jónsdóttir – Þú (A nice uptempo song of Yohanna, but not as good as "Is it true" and "Nótt".)

Eliminated:

- Edda Viðarsdóttir – Sá sem lætur hjartað ráða för
- Magni Ásgeirsson – Ekki líta undan (I find Magni a very good singer with a beautiful voice and find his previous songs very good but this song I like less. Moreover, there are better songs in this heat. Although I’m sure that he goes to the final.)
- Svavar Knútur Kristinsson & Hreindís Ylva Garðarsdóttir Hólm – Lífið snýst

Good luck Iceland!

1. Yohanna. Her song is not that good but she's such a good singer that she could sing Facebook uh ah ah or Euro neuro, it would become a treasure...
2. Magni. That's the same point... He's a great performer...
3. Birgitta. She's über-dated ! Gosh ! But, she's a good singer !

The other 3 are too annoying. The false Sjonni's friends, the blonde woman who is off-tune, and Yehalif Yehalif Yehalif.... He has a life... So what ? Me too ! :D

Just like yesterday again a very strong semi-final in Iceland. I hope for this outcome tonight:

To the final:

- Erna Hrönn Ólafsdóttir – Augnablik (A very beautiful and strong not typical Icelandic song. It sounds like a song that could come from one of the Balkan countries.)
- Jógvan Hansen & Stefanía Svavarsdóttir – Til þín (An awesome and strong song! I think this is the best entry from Jógvan until now. He deserves to win Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins soon.)
- Sylvía Erla Scheving – Stund með þér

1. Erna Hrönn Ólafsdóttir – Augnablik
2. Unnur Eggertsdóttir – Ég syng!
3. Klara Ósk Elíasdóttir – Skuggamynd
4. Sylvía Erla Scheving – Stund með þér
5. Haraldur Reynisson – Vinátta
6. Jógvan Hansen & Stefanía Svavarsdóttir – Til þín

I couldn't care less for any of these ones except Erna. My #2 and #3 in this SF are good songs but I could live without them :)

My overall favorite is "Ég á líf", and my 2nd pick (almost tied) is Erna's "Augnablik", although I think as a Eurovision entry Erna's one would stand out more! I'll be happy if any of these 2 win. 3rd comes Birgitta's song, which is a nice powerful ballad but nothing that I haven't heard before.

Great first semi from Iceland. They certainly put Norway to shame with song quality and good voting. I wanted Birgitta, Magni and Svavar Knútur Kristinsson to get through but on reflection the song by Eyþór was also very good. Now looking forward to 2nd semi.

I want Birgitta to win.

Alister & CC92 should be rooting for Svavar Knútur Kristinsson og Hreindís Ylva.

Apparently the male singer is very intent on preserving the Icelandic music tradition. If this were to win and go to Malmo, it'd probably be at the least partially in Icelandic.

I'm pretty happy with the qualifiers yes ;)

I must say, just as last year, Iceland is shaping up to have the best national selection imo.

And yup, I really hope that this year, whoever wins, will stick to Icelandic.

As like last year I agree, mainly because none of the songs would sound good in English imho. Magni's would have been good in English, but nothing left in the competition would. Let's hope that whoever wins doesn't have a Greta sized ego.

Don't hold your breath, most likely most, if not all (with the exception of the one I mentioned earlier) would translate their entries into English.

It hurt Iceland in 2012 a lot (the song was meant to be sung in Icelandic IMO) but didn't really make a big difference in 2011. But Gooo Jógvan Hansen is probably my favorite so far so I'm all for it.

2012 is a good example where it really took away from the overall impression of the entry.

Thing is the acts are so desperate that they don't even think rational, some songs really don't benefit from translation.

I still think it's odd to force acts to enter in the national language if they'll just translate it for ESC anyways, to me it's tricking the supporters and viewers... what you see is definitely not what you get (in the end).

I do cross my fingers though that whoever wins will have some backbone and realize that it's not always for the better to translate (2012) and maybe a glimpse at the top. 10 of 2012 might convince the unconvinced (where the majority of the entries were atleast partly in native languages).

Really? I disagree. Firstly, I don't think her entry is that similar to last year's Icelandic entry, and secondly and most importantly her entry this year (imo) is WAY above her 2011 entry which was just a generic bland ballad.

I'm no expert on Icelandic music scene, but as far as I'm concerned there weren't that big "names" in the second semi so I think the risk of "names" being chosen instead of songs in the first semi were higher, and I guess therefor people are even more "shocked" that one of the better songs (in their opinion) of this semi didn't make it...

If it would have stayed in Icelandic, this would have been my second fav Icelandic entry to date (after 1993).

However, Erna's visual approach is nicely put off-turning, and although things like that should not matter... it does effect viewers I'm afraid.

But nevertheless, I'm sad it's out :(

But there's still some good options left, for me it all comes down to if they'll be translated or not though... I don't want to have a reprise of last year's miss of translating a good song and making it generic.

Definitely, Augnablik was not a good song for me... It's too flute and medieval and boring...
So far Jogvan and his girl are the only one that impressed me, but I'm not appealed by anyone...

I have the feeling that Iceland will have hard to enter the final...

Well that's just like in 2007 and 2010. recently, when Scandinavia hosted the contest, the other scandinavian countries didn't do well (2007, Denmark, Iceland and Norway out, Sweden not doing well with the Ark ; 2010, excepting Denmark, Iceland and Norway a little disappointing, Finland out AND the Anna Bergendahl-gate...)

Let's hope it will not be the same this year !

Yes I'm a flute hater ! :D
No, I exagerate, I can stand flutes ! I liked Niamh Kavannagh's It's for you, i was found of hari Mata Hari's Lejla.
I think what I don't like is the Scandinavian use of the flute maybe ! Or just the mixing up ethno-dance-pop thing... As I told you, we're not used to this kind of music in France, and it doesn't appeal to me...
Traditional song is OK, just like Työlki ellää, but remixed as a pop song sung by a blonde, it annoys me... You know, Alvedansen, it amused me, with their so white dresses, it looked like an advertisement for clothes soap ! :D But it perfectly matches the way we Mediterranean imagine the people from the wide north ! :)

Hmm, "Alvedansen" was hardly "mixed with pop"... it was very ethno-ish imo.

Well, isn't the point with ESC to listen to styles that you're not used from in your native country though?

It is ! And hopefully it is as France lives closed on itself... :( But I still prefer when Balkan, Caucasus or Ireland use a flute ! hahahaha :D

Last year, apart from Loreen of course, I loved Axel Algmark "Kyss mig" and Lisa Miskovsky "Why start a fire ?" Still in my tops ! :) And the year before Christian Walz had my heart with "Like Suicide" ! :D And the year before, I was so sad not to see Salem al Fakir in ESC ! From Norway, I prefered Lise Karlsnes with "Sailors" (and hated Plumbo !). From Denmark, I loved lots of songs, but I prefered Jesper, and I loved also Aya, Kenneth Potempa, and even Ditte Marie ! In Iceland, well, I'm not ashamed though I know it's odd, I really loved "Fatherz'n'Sonz Rytingur". Well this is the Scandinavian genres I like ! :)
