I simply hope for a pre-selection, that will be easier to understand than this year´s.
And a song as good as 2009 and ´10 would be nice.

It seems they really have a thing for these mournful understated songs in Finland. LUV'IT.
They even sent one this year, but "När jag blundar" was too unoriginal and uninteresting to get anywhere imo. They should've chosen Aili. Her song "Mun Taivas" had kinda the same feeling as the two songs above, although more folky.

I'd be all for Nightwish representing Finland in Sweden next year. :D They almost made it to Sweden last time around for the 2000 show, coming second in the national selection with "Sleepwalker". They should give it another go. I bet they'd easily win the national selection this time around. That would be my 12 pointer, right there. :D

Yeah, she was fired. A lot of it was that she was being way too much of a diva in the end (with the help of her manager/husband) and not making the band and live shows her priority when on tour.

I see, but didn't also the popularity decline with her leaving? Oh well, it was their prerogative. In this genre I very much prefer Within Temptation over Nightwish.. but that should be said in the Dutch thread I guess

Finnish Television, YLE, confirmed that the final of their 2013 national selection, UMK, will take place the 9th of February in the Barona Areena in Espoo. The submission of songs for Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK) started the 3rd of September and closes next Sunday the 16th at 16:00

The Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK) or in English, New Music Competition, looks for Finland's best new songs. UMK is open to all musicians regardless of musical style to contribute their own unpublished demo songs.
Demos are still accepted until Sunday 16th at 16 o'clock. Finland is looking for a song that will make it to the Final in Malmö next May after not reaching this year's Final in Baku with Pernilla's När Jag Blundar, the winner of UMK 2012.
This time the final of UMK won't be in Helsinki but in Espoo's Barona Areena with some 7,000 seats. The selected date is Saturday the 9th of February and tickets for the final will go on sale from the 8th October 2012.

I mean is she an artist or does she just have a conventional technical good voice without personality (like in the clip)? That's my main concern about Idol (etc.) acts, many lacks personality.

I'd like a song in Finnish, I prefer an emotional ballad in this nice language!

Or if they'll choose something rock, I beg you not metal, I hate metal. I wouldn't mind a good hard rock song, but a good one, not like that crap of Slovakia in ESC 2012.

My favorite Finnish entry is 2007, so my preference would be a rock song by a female vocalist like Leave Me Alone!

Well, my favorite Finnish entry is 2010 followed by 2012, but I agree with your idea about rock. 2007 was a pretty good entry aswell, prefer it over those metal cr*p they sent for sure.

I totally agree that they should send a song in Finnish (learn from Estonia!!). I'd love for an ethno-ballad in Finnish, we haven't got anything like that... something like 2010, but in ballad form :)

Floor Jansen

Nightwish drama again:
Is Nightwish back on track with the new vocalist Floor Jansen? In the midst of a tour in the US, Nightwish had to make a sudden change of vocalist. The fabulous Elize Ryd (Kamelot) stepped in temporarily and with the hands full of paper with Nightwish lyrics avoided catastrophe on stage. Once again the fatal decision to fire the amazing Tarja was evident. In a swift series of actions Dutch Floor Jansen was announced as the new Nightwish vocalist and had only 10 days with rehearsals before the next concert. And ... she did it! Success!

Great news!

Joni
3rd December 2012, 22:42
YLE messed up again this year and Diandra's name leaked before the official date tomorrow to announce the 12 UMK finalists. Apparently UMK's aim this year is to find an international name and Diandra (18) surely fits that label so one can ask now, even without knowing the other 11 names, is it already done? Diandra is very popular and talented, with amazing voice and likable personality. She comments: "This is so much fun and exciting! This is so different from Idols, where singers are competing against each others, here the songs are. Her song Calling into you is written by Lere Leskinen, Patric Sarin and Sharon Vaugh and she describes it as a midtempo pop song where she gets to display the full capacity of her voice. It has good lyrics and catchy refrain. I'm an Eurovision fan. I always watch it with my grandpa, we make popcorn and good food!"

If the song is good, she is the winner because pretty much everyone loves her here.

I can't find anything about Arion and they seem to be a new or temporary constellation. Honestly none of the songs stand out for me, I can't remember any of them when I've finished listening to the snippets.
Not bad choices though, just uninteresting ones.

All of the contestants seem to be emerging artists and as far as I can see only Diandra (Universal) have backup from a record company. I guess this is the point with UMK, using ESC to promote new Finnish music. Spot on I'd say but leave a lot of questions. Being signed to a label is more or less mandatory for Melodifestivalen and I think participation costs somewhere 100-500000 SEK. Some artists like Danny and Charlotte Perrelli put up a lot more for Melodifestivalen 2012. Obviously for this UMK model to be successful, the artists need help to stage their songs and guidance after UMK and ESC. The last being very important BMO.

^ If they can get this rolling in a good way with new talented artists every year, Finland is going to be very dangerous in ESC, I think.

Wow - I am impressed by the finnish selection! There are several songs here that seems nice (but it's always difficult to judge only by short snippets): Diandra, Elina, Krista, Last Panda..

My first impressions based on the very short snippets available online:

1. ATLÉTICO KUMPULA - Paperilyhty (http://www.escforums.com/artisti/atletico-kumpula/biisi/paperilyhty)
Yes, very good first impression, it sounds something I would expect from Finland and seems to have a very strong melody and chorus.

2. ARION - Lost in the woods (http://www.escforums.com/artisti/arion/biisi/lost-in-the-woods)
It sounds like a middle of the road rock song and the little piece of the chorus that we get to listen to sounds decent but also predictable.

3. DIANDRA - Colliding into you (http://www.escforums.com/artisti/diandra/biisi/colliding-into-you)
Very Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus, may win the teen vote but may not be my personal favorite

4. ELINA ORKONEVA - He's not my man (http://www.escforums.com/artisti/elina-orkoneva/biisi/hes-not-my-man)
This one has potential but more than any of the other songs so far, requires a full listen before I can really comment on it as it seems a bit more complex than the others.

5. GREAT WIDE NORTH - Flags (http://www.escforums.com/artisti/great-wide-north/biisi/flags)
First impression is not too good, very monotone melody and I'm curious

6. IINA SALIN - Last night (http://www.escforums.com/artisti/iina-salin/biisi/last-night)
It's an uninspiring disco wannabe song, don't like it at all.

7. ILARI HÄMÄLÄINEN - Sytytä mut vaan (http://www.escforums.com/artisti/ilari-hamalainen/biisi/sytyta-mut-vaan)
I'm indifferent on this one. Nothing really stood out.

8. KRISTA SIEGFRIDS - Marry me (http://www.escforums.com/artisti/krista-siegfrids/biisi/marry-me)
This is definitely something I could see being played on radio. It seems fresh and even though it may not be my style I can see this one doing rather well.

9. LAST PANDA - Saturday night forever (http://www.escforums.com/artisti/last-panda/biisi/saturday-night-forever)
Not that original but certainly catchy.

10. LUCY WAS DRIVING - Dancing all around the universe (http://www.escforums.com/artisti/lucy-was-driving/biisi/dancing-all-around-the-universe)
Even though it's just a short clip, I already liked the words to the song so I can't wait for the full song.

11. MIKAEL SAARI - We should be through (http://www.escforums.com/artisti/mikael-saari/biisi/we-should-be-through)
Sounds like a very powerful ballad but difficult to sing. I'm intruiged though so it's on my "watch out for this one" list

12. RAUTAKOURA - Ilmalaivalla (http://www.escforums.com/artisti/rautakoura/biisi/ilmalaivalla)
Weak, at least from what i can tell so far.

Overall I'm not that impressed but let's wait for the full songs before passing final judgement but at this point I liked ATLÉTICO KUMPULA - Paperilyhty (http://www.escforums.com/artisti/atletico-kumpula/biisi/paperilyhty) the best.

Online voting currently has Diandra's "Colliding into you" in 1st place, closely followed by Krista Siegfried & "Marry me".

After that there is a larger gap where Arion with "Lost into the woods" sits in 3rd place.

And Rautakoura is dead last. This all may change.

It seems that some people believe in Iina Salin. Her song sounds a bit like retro 80s disco (which I like - Whitney, Michael J etc). The only info I can find about her is her Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/iinasalin) page where she sings famous covers (none very good though). Even so, I feel she triggers my cheering mode. xcheerxcheer

Based on the 1st Introduction show and the snippets (both contain only demos), my top 4:

1. Krista Siegfrids - Marry me
2. Diandra - Colliding into you
3. Last Panda - Saturday night forever
4. Mikael Saari - We should be through

Difficult to say about the rest.

This might change next month though when the final versions are released.

With this you mean there will be two TV stage shows (in TV studio already recorded?) with six songs each? AFAIU a kind of preview where the jury meets the contestants and we get to hear the full songs? Then there will be live shows and a live final, right?

I found this schema on Wikipedia (http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finland_i_Eurovision_Song_Contest_2013):
2012-12-27: The contributions introduced
2013-01-03: Jury meets participants 1
2013-01-10: Jury meets participants 2
2013-01-17: Live Concert 1, Circus nightclub in Helsingfors
2013-01-24: Live Concert 2, Circus nightclub in Helsingfors

1. Mikael Saari - We should be through: Wow! I didn't expect this from the snippet. An emotional and haunting ballad xup Gotta love the orchestration. xheart 9/10 from me.
2. Diandra - Colliding into you: She kinda let me down. I expected more from her to be honest. Anyway, it's a great RnB ballad but nothing soo special :) Totally listenable xlisten28/10 from me.
3. Great Wide North - Flags: This song stuck in my head whole day. But I guess It won't do well :( Great chorus though xcheer 8/10
4. Elina Orkenova - He's not my man: Nice, catchy -old-fashioned but still fresh- tune xcheer 7/10
5. Iina Salin – Last Night: Her voice doesn't fit her body at all. 6/10
6. Krista Siegfrids – Marry Me: Is it just me or she sounds like "f**k you" instead of "for you" in the chorus? 5,5/10
7. Atletico Kumpula – Paperilyhty: It sounded promising in the snippets but it turn out to be boring. :? 5/10
8. Last Panda – Saturday Night Forever: Too boybandish for me. It sounds catchy though. :D 4/10
9. Lucy Was Driving – Dancing All Around The Universe: OK-ish song, nothing more nothing less. :) 4/10
10. Rautakoura – Ilmalaivalla: Soo repetitive. xsleep 3/10
11. Arion – Lost In The Worlds: Not my cup of tea. 3/10
12. Ilari Hämäläinen - Sytytä Mut Vaan: A complete mess for me. 2/10

Mikael Saari's soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/mikael-saari). xboring The YLE performance likewise BMO. :/ A ballad needs passion! We'll see if he could give a matching performance when the thing goes live though.

edit:
Suddenly I realise the song can grow on me. Somehow it is yet to be finished though. 3:45 minutes needs to be shortened to 3 minutes and I think the 45 s piano interlude is beautiful but misplaced in an ESC context. He said they will bring a piano player and dancers on stage for the live performance which I think is a really bad idea. Focus should be on the guy - bring him a choreographer and work on an amazing vocal crescendo in the end. :)

I just listened to the songs for the 1st semi-final.
I usually prefer to listen to the songs in the live shows, but I probably won't watch UMK.

01. Colliding into you - I really liked this one. Even though it is a bit generic, it was actually very pleasant in the ear! It is nice and catchy, and Diandra's voice is cool.
It wouldnt be a sure qualifier in the ESC, but it could reach the Final. In there, I think the maximum placing would be something like 15th. It's too generic to reach a top 10, I think (remember this is just the first listening). 7.5-8/10

02. Last night - I really liked this one! I know why some people might dislike it, but I liked that disco vibe! She sings very well, and the song is catchy! The main problem is that the song is quite repetitive, but still, it's totally listenable. I actually think I prefer it to Collidng into you :D
I don't think it stands a chance in winning UMK though. But it could even qualify in Malmo, I think, and who knows, finish around the same position as Colliding into you would, or better. 8/10

03. Sytytä mut vaan - It is a very nice rock tune, but it isn't that special. A bit repetitive. Reminds me of Macedonia 2009. Nothing else to say really  7/10

04. Saturday night forever - Another good rock tune, this one more teen. His vocals aren't great but it kinda suits the song. Still, it should be better than the previous entry, and it could also reach the Final of the ESC, but finish mid-table as well, or even bottom 5.7/10

05. We should be through - His vocals are great! The song itself is good, but not as good as some people say, I think. Still, it's quite epic, and it will probably grow on me. It is the one that has the highest chances of doing well in the ESC, but it could also be a flop. 7.5-8/10

06. Ilmalaivalla - The song isn't as bad as some people say, but it is nothing special. The way they say "Ilmalaivalla" is very weird though  The worst in the line-up I think. 6.5-7/10

For me , the best is "Last night" followed by "We should be through", qualifying both to the final. Not far behind is "Colliding into you", with "Saturday night forever" a distant 4th, qualifying both to the Second Chance.

We should be through is just awesome. I hope Finland will choose it! It's the best one so far. Easy. I'd vote for it!

I'm rooting for Colliding into you and We should be through to qualify to the final on Thursday.

As for the one song that will be eliminated indefinitely, I'd probably pick Sytytä mut vaan. It just seems like the least viable option for ESC of all of the songs competing in this semi.

Diandra was the solid act BMO even if I think she must work much more on the stage show. I think Iina Salin was too nervous and blew it this time.

Mikael Saari's "We Should Be Through" actually gave me some quite unexpected chills there. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Gosh there better be some kind of mega excuse if thats not to be chosen as Finland's entry this year.. an excuse such as Rona Nishliu acquiring finnish citizenship and entering Suus part 2 would be acceptable. I can't really see that particular excuse becoming available however soooo.... SEND Mikael Saari!!!!

I like Mikael Saaris song too. A very different song that I must say feels a bit muscalish without being boring or cliché.
Really strong song, and I think Finland would be one of the big faves among the juries with that song in ESC. (y) :)

Agree completely. The studio version impressed me, but hearing it live I got my first official goosebumps for this season's ESC and now it HAS to win, because it would do well at the contest.

I have not heard the studio version of it yet but it's one of very few ESC songs to give me goosebumps. Off the top of my head the only other songs to do that were Suus, Et Sil Fallait Le Faire, Stronger Every Minute and Rapsodia. It's a powerful thing for a song to be able to do that to you. I know it's never good to get ahead of ourselves but I really see it doing very well in the contest, possibly fighting up there at the top of the leader board. You're right it HAS to win!!!

I don't get the hype around Mikael Saari's song... yes it's quite good but not that "OOOOH TOP 5 IN ESC FOR SURE IF IT WIN FINNISH NF". I think it can be lost in the televoting. I also don't like that when there's ballad some people like then people think the juries will love it for sure... It's not true...

Actually I prefer Pernilla's song ahead of Saari's song.

1. Iina Salin - Last night
2. Rautakoura - Ilmalaivalla
3. Diandra - Colliding into you

5. Ilari Hämäläinen - Sytytä mut vaan
6. Mikael Saari - We should be through

So I hope, that Mikael Saari won´t win... but I think, it would do well in ESC (like most of the songs I don´t really like ^^)

Theres always the chance that something won't do well despite being favoured and hyped up. I feel Mikael's song has something different to it which sets it apart from the typical ballad one would expect at Eurovision. The song soars at unexpected moments and is beautifully thought out in a non by numbers way. Also theres nothing in the song thats going to offend people unlike "Suus" which still did extremely well despite the almost universal dislike and misunderstanding of it at first. Providing the contest isn't flooded with other Baroque Pop songs, i'd hazard a guess that this would do very nicely if it was chosen.. and i'd also hazard a guess at the jury utterly fawning over it due to it's quality. Juries are weird though so it's true, you can never be certain.

Yeah and we all know how well Pernilla did. The fact that every single one of the Finish jury gave Saari full points is a pretty good indicator. Juries around Europe would lap this up. No idea about the public, we'll have to wait and see on that one. And I'm not saying It'll do well because It's a ballad, I'm saying It'll do well because It's a good song.

Every single finnish juries didn't give it full points... It's different to stand out in a finnish heat with 7 participants than do it in a ESC final with 26 competitiors.

Pernilla was the best out of 2012 selection, but her song, though beautiful, was rather forgettable. Add to that she was nit used to singing on stage so that she always seemed ill-at-ease with her shoulders very high and her arms going everywhere ! And what an ugly dress !!!! In France we always say that green is forbidden on stage because it steals luck ! :D

Mickael Saari, o, the other hand is a great performer. His song, sung by anybody, would be huge failure. But he has the X-Factor (lol). He is capable to modulate his voice to do something that blows anyone away !

I wish the judges could decide the winner. They know that Diandra's song simply is not good enough - but the voters just dont get it, they vote her - because she is Diandra! If the judges could decide alone, their choice would be Mikael or Krista.

The opposite thing from Lithuania !

20th January 2013, 19:47
It's such a tricky dilemma... Sometimes the public is clueless and sometimes it's the jury/judges. Too often it results in having a random and stupid winner like in Lithuania, and I fear it will also happen in other countries... SOOC
I haven't followed the finnish selection closely enough to pick a clear favourite, but Mikael definitely has more to offer than Diandra imo. I'm slightly reminded of Tenfold Rabbit from last year's Eesti Laul. It's not something I love, but at least it's not cheap.

LalehForWD

As this develops I'm more and more in the rooting mode for Krista. She has a charming concept, a catchy song and an outstanding artistry that is just perfect for Eurovision. I heard some rumours she is controversial among grumpy Finnish critics though. Hope it isn't true.

2. Krista Siegfrieds

3. Lucy Was Driving
4. Atlético Kumpula
5. Great Wide North

6. Elina Orkoneva

I agree, Arion is by far the best musically, but can someone style the singer now.... Krista is cool and deserves a place in the final, but Elina Orkoneva was among the most boring song I've heard this year xboring

Great Wide North the clear winners in this semi for me. They have a great anthemic sound - a bit like A Friend In London but more natural with it.

RainyWoods
24th January 2013, 23:24
The only one I found mildly amusing (secretly like) gets sent home. I lasted 30 seconds of Krista's song before I had to turn it off. Lasted the full 3 minutes of Arion as I was soo bizarrely fixated on that singer. I have never seen anyone look more out of place:lol:

This is Mikael's for the win surely. Anything less would be some kind of massive crime.
