KERLI!!!!!

Starmania
29th April 2012, 17:33
2 semi finals system is great. There should be ten old faces and ten new ones in selection (i'd love that).
Kerli may return this year, but i'm not sure. Sven Lõhmus will send a new song, most probably with his new Suntribe-ish band. I'd love to see Laura, but she's done with Eesti Laul i guess, and she is enjoying the selling of her compilation album. Let's see.

I would really like to see Loss Paranoias and "Cat Eye" again in next year's field! xbounce I really adore Kerli too, but there's no way she'll ever return to Eurovision. And thank god. She's already an established artist.
My ultimate dream would be to see IIRIS VESIK for Estonia in 2013. She was totally robbed in 2010...

No-no-no! As I said in the 2012 thread, that project is a joke, a lost cause, stllborn non-sense. There's no way to take it seriously. To begin with, their silly name has a blatant grammar error: Sunberrys??? Seriously? The plural form of berry is berries. Secondly, it looks like that project is meant for promoting Kanal 2 and their stupid "news show", which is worse than Fox News, rather being a standalone group. Two of the pre-selected members of this group are talentless "weather girls" and their first single is going to be their "news show's" summer theme. Thirdly, they said the project is going to be for a summer. They are going to cover famous dance songs and maybe will to a couple of original songs.

I think one of the main questions at the moment is that who will take over Heidy Purga's place as the main producer of Eesti Laul and if there are going to be any major changes. Heidy is pregnant and will give birth in a few weeks and then she can enjoy her 18 months of maternity leave with full salary. So I doubt she will be involved in Eesti Laul 2013 (or maybe even 2014). Hopefully there won't be any big changes as the current format has proved to be a success.

It doesn´t need big changes imo (I just hope, a better song than this year will win next year^^)

I guess that she will take a break from R2, but not from Eesti Laul.

Do you know any other songs that didn't make it to the semis this year? All I found was this list: http://www.hot.ee/eestilaul2012/konkurss.html

That list is not trustworthy. There are at least a few songs that were not sent to the competition.

Jana Kask didn't send "Feel the Vibe", but she did sent "Hurricane".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjZXyGknIDE

Mia didn't send "Ekraan", but she did send "Igast ööst saab päev".

Shirubi Ikazuchi didn't send "Warsoul", that song is a few yers old anyways.

etc.

Proves my point even further then

Then he's simply useless haha. He is like Estonian Ralph Siegel, from "Ein Bisschen Frieden" to "Network song"... but change the titles from "Rändajad" to "Leto Svet"

I'm starting to think these people either had a ghost writer by their side, or the acts simply had much input in those particular rare but brilliant cases, considering 90% of their material have been laughable almost.

eerik
24th July 2012, 16:43
Well I personally think this new song is pretty good for what it is. Koit Toome wrote the music, Sven Lõhmus wrote the lyrics and the production part was probably 50/50.

Here are some of Lõhmus' earliest attempts in Eurolaul:

I don't know what you are expecting from Eurovision and mainstream pop music...

Well, you get what you expect. I don't have that view on neither Eurovision nor mainstream pop music, and I never will have. I judge music for what it is, good or bad, and for me there is no rule of what type of music could enter Eurovision and it's not a "pop" contest anyways.

Also, I don't have a mindset about pop as being something bad, there are good and bad pop, tacky and quality. Some people are really looking down at everything commercial, well I don't judge anything by its commercial appeal, I simply judge by my own subjective taste.

Rändajad is a good example of a high quality Eurovision song, you mean it shouldn't have been there?

eerik
24th July 2012, 21:56
I think there have been some misunderstandings from both sides.

You think that the new Koit Toome song is generic, and I totally agree. It is. It's totally forgettable as I've listened it to five times already and remember nothing from. But this leads me to another point - it's listenable. It doesn't have any gimmicky elements that I hate in current pop music, e.g. pseudo-dubstep breakdown, horrible autotuning, repeating of a single word, etc. It's well produced and the lyrics, while you don't understand them, are also quite decent. And I think it's an okay pop song. It's not a great song by any means, but it's very far from being a disaster.

As for Rändajad, it's a typical Lõhmus' song. I'm sad to tell you this but it's 100% written by Lõhmus himself and Urban Symphony was just a group he but together for Eesti Laul. As far as I know/remember, the demo version submitted to Eesti Laul was a bit different and credited only Sandra Nurmsalu as the performer. And Sandra was just a girl who caught Lõhmus' attention in a singing competition. Lõhmus has never been an extraordinary songwriter, he has had his bright moments and a lot of misfires, but to call him useless is just too harsh.

A-lister
24th July 2012, 21:59

Don't take everything so literal, no one is really "useless", I tend to be a bit harsh and sarcastic in my tone at times. But it's true that from everything I heard so far, "Rändajad" is the only actual good thing (imo) which makes me wonder.

I give him cred for that song alone though.

In the end of the day, it's all subjective.

I also don't like Laura's entry, don't get why it was such a fan-wank tbh...

Suntribe's entry was atleast a bit cute, but not very good.

Watching these, I think it was even more important to develop the Eesti Laul concept. Estonia's quality in entries really went down alot from the (fab) 90's in the 00's. Just recently (with 2009 entry and introduction of Eesti Laul) it went up again... although I don't agree with most of the winners though.

SEL TEEL
is a new song taken from the second full-length album "Dreams Come True" by the Estonian electronica act Sinine, featuring female vocals by wonderful Sandra Nurmsalu (who some may remember as the Estonian who came in 6th at the 2009 Eurovision song contest).

SININE IS
Sinine is Estonian electronica singer/songwriter/producer Mauno Meesit with additional vocal performance by Liina Rätsep and live-drums by Jaagup Tormis.
Sinine's compositions organically blend a pop sensibility with elements of rock, electronica, dubstep, classical, ambient, folk and trip-hop music into songs underscored by Meesit's distinctive musical handwriting.
It was fall 2003 when Meesit, after having played guitar in several rock bands, started searching for ways of making more personalized music. He started experimenting with electronic music, and his solo project Sinine (the Estonian word for "blue") was born. Sinine's first album Butterflies was released on September 18th, 2009 on the prominent German label Accession Records. It was highly acclaimed amongst fans and critics alike. Now Sinine is about to release the second album Dreams Come True and this is only the beginning...
- "Newcomer of the Year" title at Estonian Music Awards 2009
- 5 weeks on German Trend Charts Top 10
- "Best Electronic Music Artist" nomination at Estonian Music Awards 2010
- SININE has shared stages together with well known bands such as The Birthday Massacre (CAN), Diorama (GER), Diary of Dreams (GER) and many others.
- "Highlight of October" title in 2009 in one of the leading electronic music print magazine in the Germany - Sonic Seducer.

Sandra and Sinine have given a couple of interviews this week. Sandra said that Urban Symphony has not broken up and disbanded, but she has no idea when they are going to do something new. She is still on a maternity leave and the others are busy as well. She and Sinine would like to collaborate again in the future and there's a music video planned for "Sel teel" but that will take a few months.

Ithaka Maria, who came 5th in Eesti Laul 2011 with the entry "Hopa'pa-rei!" (2nd in televotes but robbed by juries imo - my personal favorite in the Estonian selection that year), recently took part in Crimea Fest in Ukraine as part of "Trio Baltiya" (together with a Latvian and a Lithuanian singer) performing a slightly different version of Ukrainian singer Sofia Rotaru's song "Odna Kalyna" (with added verses in Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian).

If you don't spot her directly, she's the girl on the right side (the performance starts around 00:45 in the video).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ZTWheDdnrlE#t=47s

And to all who may have forgot (or don't recognize) her Eesti Laul entry from 2011, here is a reprise of that one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMKll4bH9-o

Ithaka would be a great choice for Estonia with the right entry. "Hopa" was an über-cool song (the bit let-down was lack of lyrics and a bit too repeating though), and with something as equally cool (not necessarily in the same style though), she'd be a good pick for sure! She has the looks (I mean she's über-hot!), stage presence, stage personality and is a good live singer aswell... all she needs is a strong entry and she should be ready to go to Malmö!

Think like this: Some others say " If you want to get a good point from our country in ESC, you have to send X singer", for instance some wants the singer Tal for France as a condition to send votes to France. :?
I have never been into that mood, i have no condition, i will vote Estonia if they send great songs every year, and i'm planning to get nf ticket as soon as they declare it is avaliable to buy. 8-)

WoW ! Põhja-Tallinn ! I hoped them but I thought they would'nt enter Eesti Laul ! Liis Lemsalu, cool too. Other names... well... I'm not keen on them or they are totally unknown to me and to google also ! :D
But, I hope PTN proposed another song, more like Lähen ja Tulen. This one is not so strong...
Well I'm still hoping for big names ! :) I guess we will see Rolf Rossalu or Pop Maniacs or a duett Roosalu/Lints... ! :) And Mimicry and those we see each year ! hahaha
As for now, I'm not found of Triin Nitoja and I dislike the song displayed on Youtube by Sven Lõhmus. Well, he wins every two years but maybe not this time ! hahaha

Anyways, Põhja-Tallinn must re-do their song. It is about 25 seconds too long and the children choir must be replaced (most likely with their regular female vocalist Maia).

Some really exciting names again <3
Birgit's song is adorable again, fits my style more than last year's song.
Rolf was unpredictable for me, but i like his true ESC spirit, i just hope he has the right song this time.
I predicted Marilyn Jurman, and i'm sure she will rock the stage again, i still adore Veel On Aega, from 2011 nf.
Teele Viira's song is brilliant, i was not expecting to see her, but i'm really glad she is in <3
One more name i predicted is Rosanna Lints. Composer is Rolf Roosalu and she will be finalist i guess, one another exciting name for me.
Liis was also unpredictable for me, i love that she's in again, i expect much better song now.
Tenfold Rabbit's song is quite good, but i doubt it will have the vibe of "Oblivion" for me.
I wonder how Põhja-Tallinn's song will sound in revamped version, it is really brilliant with extended and children-choir added version. It will lose some magic in it for sure.
There was some discuss about Idol contest and Anisa Vänikver here, now she is in and it is one of the big surprises for me too :) :)
Also, Elina Born is from latest Idol contest. Composer will be Stig Rästa. May stand out.
Korsikud's song sounds really nice, so Jaan Pehk is in for 3 years in a row.
Grete Paia's song may stand out, as Sven Lohmus continues the tradition of sending song in every 2 year. I expect some good rank, maybe winner.
Winny Puhh's song will take so long for me to like, i guess. Maybe i won't like it at all, let's see.
Flank's song is super ! I already adore it.

But it is also true that he could have done better in the previous years. Let´s see what he does now. Probably he has already learned something :p

About Tenfold Rabbit: I think last year´s song was better. Even in a possible performance. "Oblivion" was more mysterious. This song is more "normal". It will be more forgettable.

I guess it's true what some of the jury members said: the overall level of songs is horribly low this year. I don't even want to hear the rest of the selection. Based on the names, there will be some well produced songs by experienced producers/songwriters, but I'm afraid they will be very bland and painfully boring. The only one's I'm looking forward to are Grete Paia and Liis Lemsalu. Otherwise, it's the worst Eesti Laul so far.

To illustrate how popular is Põhja-Tallinn in Estonia at now here is the biggest end of the year chart in domestic category

1. Põhja-Tallinn - Meil on aega veel (1385)
2. Põhja-Tallinn - Lähen ja tulen (947)
3. Ott Lepland - Kuula (911)
4. Põhja-Tallinn - Nii lihtsalt ei saa (381)
5. Lenna - Mina jään (341)
6. Respekt - Anna andeks (339)
7. Vaiko Eplik - Soorebased (309)
8. Ott Lepland - Imede öö (302)
9. Ott Lepland - Kodu (280)
10. Artjom Savitski - Sinu juurde tagasi (275)

As you can see their song already won the biggest hit in 2012 award and their other songs are 2nd and 4th. Ott Lepland did well too.

I just listened to Põhja-Tallinn and their song is great. I just wonder how they'll do the children's choir live (and make it sound good) as it seems to be the main hook of the song.

At around 3:13, Maia sings the choir part herself, i think it may give us a clue how it will sound on stage.
And the Youtube video for the song has 827K views, soonly it will be 1M which is way above Estonian standards.
It may win regardless of live performance, due to this extreme fame.

I love this song too. Very catchy to say the least.

Well I am quite sure that they may do a horrible live show and end 1st on televote. The question is all about how high will the jury rate them as the jury fav will be most likely something like kõrsikud.

Yeah it seems the jury will be their biggest obstacle and they have completely tossed out televoting favourites in the past Estonian selections.

Only once though.

Yeah, jury will avoid Põhja-Tallinn winning the competition, thankfully.

The only time when televoting favourite didn't win Eesti Laul was in 2009 when we sent Rändajad instead of Destiny.

If it happened once it can happen again. And it seems like you're counting on it for this year.

Well, they did it with Ithaka Maria aswell... well she wouldn't have won perhaps but atleast faired better if it weren't for juries.

As for 2009, the juries SAVED it though ! Thank God the masterpiece 'Rändajad' won and not that generic kitsch 'Destiny'.

I would choose Ithaka Maria song as the best one that we haven't send to represent Estonia. Still listening this masterpiece. I believe that it would have done so great! But now we won't ever know, how well or bad it had done. :(

I believe that Laura will try again in future. And Destiny wasn't her best song ;)

Imo, Laura's best try so far was with Moonwalk. The Estonians must've been high when they sent Let's Get Loud over that.

Just listened a radio interview with Põhja-Tallinn and this is what they said regarding Eesti Laul:
Studio version of "Meil on aega veel" was recorded with two rappers and six children. For EL they will just reduce the number of children to four. This means no Maia, so there will be two rappers and four children on stage. They still hope to get the whole band on the stage using "innovative solutions". I guess they might try using holograms?!

So their "children" must be more than 16 years old... BTW I don't like this solution. They should keep the band as it is (thus loosing one member at least...) with Maia singing the chorus...
