Baku becomes Host City with a huge show

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/ganjaganja/SSC 2011-2012/Buta_Palace.jpg

Baku, Azerbaijan - Tomorrow, Baku will become officially the Host City of the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest, being the first exciting event to take place in the city. It'll be followed by the Semi-Final Allocation Draw as well as the presentation of this year's theme art.

The events of tomorrow will start with the traditional Host City Insignia Exchange where the Mayor of Düsseldorf will hand over a symbolic key to the Mayor of Baku. Thus, it'll be now Baku's turn to host Europe's favourite TV show. This will be followed by a draw which will determine in which Semi-Final this year's 37 Semi-Finalists will compete in as well as where will France, the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany and Azerbaijan vote in. And if that's not enough of excitement, then the Host Broadcaster Ictimai TV will also present the theme art for this year's contest. All of that will be followed by a show featuring performances by Ruslana, Safura, Aysel, Lena, Alexander Rybak and of course, Ell/Nikki!

The event will also be aired live by the Host Broadcasters Ictimai TV as well as a number of national broadcasters all over Europe.

What about the venue?

On Wednesday morning, the Reference Group will gather in Baku for a two-day meeting, to discuss a variety of topics in the lead up to the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest. The agenda shows concrete topics, of which the most exciting one is a final decision on the venue for the upcoming contest.

Meanwhile, press and fans are eager to learn more about accreditation, accommodation in Baku, visa arrangement and of course tickets for the shows. We expect more information on all of these topics after the Reference Group meeting, so stay with Eurovision.tv for the days to come!

Hi Friends,

I got from a friend this capture from the preparations for the semi-final draws from Ictimai TV:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKMD1HB4vzc

I wonder if somebody could help translating a bit whats being talked about.
I'm especially interesting about parts refering to Lena (I'm from her fan club)

Thanks in advance if somebody might be able to help.

Vampire67, in the news they are speaking about the organisation of tomorrow's event. They talked about some 3D mapping, kind of an exciting format in which they will broadcast it. They also talked about guest singers including Alexander Rybak and Lena, a good number of journalists from national broadcasters from several European countries and Euronews. Then they told that this is the very first time there is a great show for the allocation draw followed by presentation of the logo, slogan and the website of ESC 2012. Representatives of EBU also talked about their satisfaction on preparation of ESC 2012 and some very interesting ideas to be realised for ESC 2012 which they are going to reveal soon. Well, that is all :)

Wow, Sweden seems pretty screwed this year.

In semi 2 (Sweden's semi) we have Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Macedonia, Slovenia, Ukraine and France, UK & Germany voting.

Turkey (unlike last year) will have almost all their "helpers" in this year (France, UK, Germany, Bulgaria, Sweden, Netherlands, Georgia, Macedonia).

Also the fact that ALL ex-Yugo countries (excluding Montenegro) enters the same semi makes me wonder if those pots were really fair (and of course they are all in our semi aswell). How is it possible that five out of six countries who belongs to the same voting group gets into the same semi if pots are divided based on previous voting patterns? I don't buy that at all.

Well well...

Also poor Slovakia, Bulgaria, Lithuania & Netherlands.

Romania is as always lucky (having both Spain, Moldova & Italy voting in their semi), and Greece is again together with Cyprus and of course Belgium and Netherlands are separated (god forbid they get some help at all).

ParadiseES
25th January 2012, 18:03
I didn't get one thing. Why are all ex-yugo together except Montenegro?? Aren't pots to avoid this??

Otherwise, not much more to say when we don't know the songs. But I'm sure some people will come with predictions already

croboy82
25th January 2012, 18:03

Croatia (Semi 2)

Don't worry... Turkey got France, UK, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Georgia, Bulgaria, Norway, Ukraine and Serbia got ALL the ex-Yugos (except for Montenegro) plus the diaspora from Sweden, Germany, UK, Netherlands.

I still can't believe how fair pots would manage to put all ex-Yugos in the same semi, It's hardly possible if pots were really divided based on voting patterns.

Albania is not an "ex-Yugo" country, they get help however from Albanian minority and diaspora, out of the ex-Yugos that would be Macedonia and Montenegro mostly. However they have diaspora help also from mainly Switzerland, Austria and Greece.

Yeah, but they quited Slovenia from there and this is the result. SF1

Russia

SF2

Armenia

Georgia
Norway
Serbia
Slovekia
Slovenia
Sweden
Turkey

Here's my rough prediction of the outcome (of course paying more attention to the countries and voting patterns than the songs which are not known yet):

Semi 1

Iceland
Denmark
Finland
Greece
Russia
Romania
Cyprus
Israel
Hungary
Albania

(maybe Austria and/or Belgium instead of some of the above because I can see them as jury sweethearts depending on songs of course)

Semi 2

Turkey
Serbia
Georgia
Bosnia & Herzegovina
Croatia
Macedonia
Ukraine
Slovenia
Armenia

Not sure about the last one, with a really strong song Sweden can get lucky, but otherwise I think we're screwed.

Yeah, it looks more open.
Semi 2 has stronger countries (I mean, more countries that usually do well in ESC), but 2-3 of them can fail like last year, not everyone, so doesn't look that exciting as semi 1 today.

So I expect higher level in semi 2, but more surprises and excitement in semi 1. We'll see :)

I must admit that putting all of the Ex-Yus in the same semi is weird, albeit hilarious, but we must also remember that we only know 3 songs. As Lenalite said, there will always be diaspora voting, let's not forget that a weak song can kick a "safe" country from the final, eg Armenia and Turkey last year :p

Let me share with my thought regarding the event today.

Someone could call it boring and dull but I have to repeat that this was the biggest show for the allocation draw and logo/slogan unveil ceremony in the history of ESC. Until now no ceremonies like that were broadcast live with some kind of a small concert. That is something new for ESC and it would be good to develop this concept in future ESCs! Maybe

As for the show itself, I could agree that the material was good but they could use the commercial videos, singers in row etc. in different and the way better order. As for the hosts, both very nevous at start. The host lady looks charming and nice, while the guy is a bit annoying :? The most exciting part was to see the logo and the slogan, and I liked them both though the logo a bit more ;) Love the flames out of the flower and those crescent and eight-angle star, looks beautiful xkiss

In general, it was not even a concert but a ceremony in Buta Palace, an event center. The fact that they tried to make this ceremony look interesting and full of music is only a plus cause normally they would not be supposed to broadcast it live but they did.

Now let's light our fire and look forward to a real show in May 8-)

Good night to all! :)

there is absolutely no chance for all of those countries to make it to the finals. 2, maybe 3 from each block. maybe even less if the songs turn out to be lame.

for example, we can't give 12 to all ex-yu countries. it is likely that one of them will get, true. but I also think it's unlikely that any of ex-yu's will give all of their highest points to other ex-yu's. u know, 12 to one neighbor, 10 for second neighbor, 8 for third...no way, trust me 8-)

the thing is, if we send a crappy song, we will probably get some pity-points from few neighbors...and 0 from others...and byebye finals.

that's the thing with these "blocks". they can help u so that u don't end up on the last-last place on the board (with 0 or 2 pts) but they can't push u to the finals. u have to get points from others as well. so yeah, we all need good songs.

Well dear, I know from "a very first moment" that it is never enough only to get the points from the neighbours.....and it doesn't work out in ANY block (Scandinavian, Eastern european, Mediterranean, Caucasian etc. etc., you can call them whatever you want), you HAVE TO reach some points from the others, "far away" countries as well....
If you have A DECENT and A GOOD song, the voting blocks are not important at all. That's why I say that the people who lean on the voting blocks only, and have a big expectation about it, are funny and hillarious (at least to me). :)

That's true of course. It's not that you can get to the final only by support from neighbors (as is said before), but it can HELP you and make a difference between 11th and 10th place. So it doesn't mean my country is doomed to stay in the semi this year, but it's still very bad luck.

It's only the second time since the two semis started that Greece and Cyprus are in the same semi. What's the problem with that? It's all matter of possibilities. Second semi is really interesting  Who would say that we would basically get a half ex-yu + a half of ex-soviet semi (+ the rest of the world ). It is interesting that it is random and BOOM you get an outcome like that, but that's the interesting part of this - you don't know what you end up with :D

I think Montenegro and Russia are the biggest "losers" of the draw, but that doesn't automatically mean they will not qualify. It's just that they will need really good songs in order to make it as they don't have the support of the countries that traditionally vote for them.

As for ::rs I am obviously happy with the outcome :D 2 times we didn't have a great draw, but now we can be satisfied.

Phew, I'm sure glad we ended up in the first semi! If we send something similar in quality as in 2010, we are in good company, though it would be even better if France and Germany could vote for us too (ah well, can't have it all ;)). And with Turkey and Armenia in semi 2, I think Greece can already count on our douze points as well. It is indeed weird that almost all of the Balkan countries were put in the second semi, doesn't bode well for Netherlands, Sweden and Norway. :? According to wikipedia these countries were put into pot 1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovision_Song_Contest_2012):

pot 1:
- Albania (semi 1)
- B&H (semi 2)
- Croatia (semi 2)
- FYR Macedonia (semi 2)
- Montenegro (semi 1)
- Serbia (semi 2)
- Switzerland (semi 1)
While Slovenia was in another pot (together with Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, San Marino, Slovakia). With 37 countries being divided into six allocation pots, there was always going to be one pot with a seventh country (and thus 4 countries of the same pot into the same semi). Chances of it happening were slim, but it was always a possible outcome of the allocation draw.

i think its kind of unffair, becouse 2nd semi has very strong entries.
So some good songs from 2nd semi will not qualify, and some craps from 1st semi will be in final.
Ok this happens every year, but THIS year is more obvious than ever...

I'm sure it would get annoying pretty quickly if I kept linking to my blog (apologies if so), but I did these stats (http://thankyoueurope.wordpress.com/2012/02/04/stats-corner-who-won-the-draw/) on the Eurovision draw and think you might all find them interesting. Here are the tables, which show points gained or lost compared to "normal" based on the draw.

I am not too sure that Georgia will go through this year. If they pick something weird again, they will likely stay in the semi-final.

That doesn't mean they will receive high points from these. Hopefully, Ukraine and Lithuania won't give them very high points.

0 from Estonia, I can assure you that much. They won't get points from us for the utter crap called "I'm a Jocker".

Haven't you noticed that ::ge gets 12 from ::lt every single year. Well, at least 3/4 editions so far (no idea what happened in 2008 but they gave them only xrofl3).

They've had good enough songs in previous years, not this time.

Oh wow, Austria the second biggest loser based on statistics :( But you're right, Germany, Bosnia and Croatia proved rather generous to us last year.

On the other hand, i don't see any reliable voting pattern for sweet little Autriche, so it's always tough for us to qualify. And semi #2 looks really locked for us!
