Awww thank you!! xkiss
I certainly hope so!! :mrgreen: It makes me feel more hopefully to know we are the 5th favourite - much better than being the least favourite last year! :lol:

How countries can be favorites when they still didn't even choose songs? Just based on traditionally good results (Greece, Turkey), or what?

How countries can be favorites when they still didn't even choose songs? Just based on traditionally good results (Greece, Turkey), or what?

Because these countries had strong entries all over the past years. I wonder why the Urkrain is missing.

MyHeartIsYours
21st February 2011, 14:22
Yeh, it's based on their traditionally brilliant results :).

The top 5 in SemiFinal 1 are:

1. ::no Norway - 2.1

2. ::tr Turkey - 3

3. ::gr Greece - 3

4. ::az Azerbaijan - 4

5. ::ge Georgia - 4.2

And SemiFinal 2 top 5 are:

1. ::ro Romania - 2.7

2. ::ie Ireland - 3

3. ::il Israel - 3

4. ::se Sweden - 3.5

5. ::dk Denmark - 4

Glad to see Ireland is doing well! :D

Matt
21st February 2011, 15:10
The odds are always crazy and get more "accurate" once all songs are known. I wouldn't pay too much attention to them. The UK is doing good in the odds because they're sending a big name and Turkey/Azerbaijan/Greece are up there because of their recent good results. But that is all going to change very soon.

AlekS
21st February 2011, 15:58
I assume it's just begun. We will find out the real results right closer to the dress rehearsals.
Right now they don't have enough bets/info in order to form correct data.

14th.
Dunno about semis.

EvNickGR
21st February 2011, 17:57
^Yeah , after dress-rehearsals, the bets will be ''sure''! :D

MyHeartIsYours
21st February 2011, 19:35
Yup, but also we must remember that Ireland was still one of the favourites to win the whole contest in 2008, even on the same day as its SemiFinal which it obviously got knocked-out in!

94ayd
22nd February 2011, 01:47
We have all these countries with no entries and no Poland? This is just laughable. :lol: And yeah, it'd be better to put Ukraine there, as they have such strong contenders in their NF. :D

MrJadeEwen
22nd February 2011, 03:32
Betting Odds are pointless at the moment, bookies are just decreasing the odds of those countries which "historically" do well & any hype about any entry gets the odds slashed. Until April when the Odds settle we won't be knowing much ;)

Mark-ESC14
22nd February 2011, 08:42
These lists don't really tell you anything about the possibility of winning or qualifying because it's based on results from the previous years and doesn't take into account the songs from this year. Then I can understand why Germany is at the top, since they won last year. :)

Sean
22nd February 2011, 17:51
Out of those odds Paddypower are the best option to choose as they have only got odds on countries who have already selected their song or at least an artist, but some are still missing :p

http://www.paddypower.com/bet/novelty-betting/music/eurovision-song-contest

As an irish company they also have special bets for the Irish song :p

MyHeartIsYours
23rd February 2011, 00:19
On Betfair, the 5 countries with the most money placed on them are:

1. ::de Germany - $10037

2. ::no Norway - $9205

3. ::ie Ireland - $3816

4. ::uk United Kingdom - $1198

5. ::gr Greece - $872

So as you can see, not much money has been placed atm.

Is the country with the most points in the lead or in the last position ?

The country with the lowest number is most likely to win - eg on the odds I last posted, if you placed $1 on Norway and they won, you would win $5 back so a $4 profit. With Germany, if you placed $1 you would win $7.80 back, etc.

And yeah..Bulgaria not even considered...with such a good song. I'm glad for Estonia though...but I think it's still too early for real predictions, we'll get more realistic image when Sweden, Azerbaijan, Israel, Russia, United Kingdom, Croatia choose their songs...

Remember 2010: The first bookies' favorite (Israel) didn't even make the Top 10. The second bookies' favorite (Azerbaijan) also came 5th "only", whereas the 3rd bookies' favorite was the actual winner.

By the way, it's funny to see the last 3 ESC winners in the top 4 of this year's bookies ranking.

Don't be. They don't mean anything yet. And I agree with the other statement. Estonia and Slovenia may actually flop in that second-semi final, as they are extremely overrated by ESC-fans. Last year Croatia and Sweden were massively overrated, and look how they did (even Slovakia).

Not if they keep sending bad songs. ;)

But the Israelian had problems with his song. This might had cost him a few places. And Sulfura: The whole show was far too much. She tried hard to make it from the podest to the wind maschine and back in time. This was too silly and I think, she had been able with a more reasonalbe performace to reach the top 3.

I'm sorry but I'm afraid I still don't understand anything to those numbers...

http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/4394/sanstitretkl.png

What do the bold numbers and the money in the blue circle mean, and what's the difference with the red circle ?

MyHeartIsYours
8th March 2011, 23:32
Okayy, the numbers circled in blue, ignore them. They are to do with past and future betting based on what the current odds (the red circled number) is. So the current odds (red) is how much money you would win if you placed a €1 bet on that country. So for example, from the snippit you've pasted, if you placed €1 on Russia, you would win €11.50 back if they won. Therefore, as the betting companies want to make as much money as possible, the lower the odds, the more likely that country is to win. For instance, Malta's odds is 550. So if you placed €1 on Malta and they won, you would win €550 in return - this may seem like a lot but the betting company knows that there is virtually no chance of Malta winning so they are prepared to offer such high odds.
Do you understand now? If not I can explain again :D.

MyHeartIsYours

i don't really think that betfairs the best place to check out odds, at least not at the moment. for all years, i just check a chart on

http://www.eurovisionodds.co.uk/

it tells you the best odds on every country

so far that looks like:

Norway
5.00

France
6.50

Russia
7.00

Germany
7.00

Estonia
8.00

Bosnia & Herzegovina
15.00

Greece
17.00

Denmark
17.00

Azerbaijan
17.00

UK
18.00

im suprised to see that greece is still somewhat in the top 10 favourites overall, but not even placed in the top ten semi final on betfair...

Norway dropped to #9 because Bwin (German/Austrian bookmaker) finally released their odds and they put 17.0 (!) on Norway

Estonia rose to #2, Germany to #3.

I also see Moldova as a qualifier. People were bashing on their entry generally in 2005 as well, and they brought in a great performance and ended in a 6th place. But there is no way that both Ireland and Moldova will make it. Also, I am pretty certain that Norway is going to flop in semi 1 (either Norway or Poland, since the english version they will perform on ESC is ......well very bad), and Switzerland will hardly make the cut, unless the performance is outstanding.

Also, there is no way Armenia will miss out

But we'll see

I still think B&H and Estonia are overrated, B&H song is kind of 'hyped' and it's nothing special imo... For the Estonia entry, I think the chorus is really really good, but the verses are so weak! They really hurt the song.
But, I can understand why people like the Norwegian song, I really like it myself as well so... :)

Not particularly regarding the winner, but in the Semis there have been changes. Ireland is now the 4th favourite to qualify in SF2, as opposed to it being 11th/12th before - they are still far from winning the semi though! :lol:. Greece is also almost certain to qualify.
And Macedonia is the least favourite to win, at 620!

Ireland will be bottom 5 with juries in the semi and if they pass, in the final!

They must rely only on televoting.

People should realize this kind of entry has a very very small shot at acheiving a top 10.

I hated Ukraine in 2007, but she sing ok and it was fun, it was really the best you could do with a 'joke entry' so she got 230 from televoters which would have provide her a decent result i think but the jury might even have kick her out of top 5.

And she was the best in what she was doing, the irish boys aren't

You have the mentality that the Juries dont like modern, pop songs and are only into ballads ;). That's certainly true for some Im sure but lets not forget that these Juries voted for Alexander Rybak and Lena - both of whom are not known for having amazing voices. I think Ireland has been hugely underestimated by some people - you should watch out for Jedward, they've never go down without a fight! :mrgreen:

I don't think the Juries hates pop songs or mordern songs.

I'm just saying they are voting for decent singers, at least ones where you don't see obvious flaws in the singing:D

They voted for Norway 2009 but also over 100 hundred points for Azerbaijan & Turkey.

In 2010 they awarded 187 points to Germany & 164 to Romania.

It's simple, when entries with at worst ok vocals like germany, with a good melody, a strong performance and a huge reaction from the arena can sometimes barely receive 100 points like Azerbaijan from over 40 juries, i'm thinking an entry like the irish one this year can do nothing at eurovision.

I don't say you shouldn't like it, the boys have energy, it's fun etc but when it comes to predict the contest, if you have any objectivity you will say it's a mediocre song with bad singing which juries won't vote for because of that.

And even if they do a Verka or A lithuania 2006 with the televote, which i'm ready to bet they won't, the jury vote will translate every good points they had into 3 or 4 and kick them of the top 5 or top 10.

Ireland this year is just a joke from twins who have a local popularity despite their unability to sing and europe will just see two boys who can't sing with a low quality song!

I don't think juries have something against mordern pop songs, even if i think they do prefer ballad in general.I think this year Poland, Uk & Hungary all have a shot at winning the jury vote or at least be in the top 5 with a good performance!

Of the top 5, the only one i don't see want to win is Norway, as they just won it, Same for Russia & Germany but to see them in top 10 wouldn't be a problem for me.

France, Sweden & Estonia back to the top 5 would be great (and uk too even if they were in 2009), even if i'm not a fan of the swedish song, i think those 4 are great esc country and to see them fighting for a place in the top 5 instead of the usual suspect would be great

The odds were doing pretty well to predict the outcome those past years, sure in 2011 there is going to be some surprises and all but i don't think there is room for a massive surprise nowadays.

Even if you have a bad bet, now we hall the coverage, reviews and media we get from the Semis, you are sure to have a better one and an even better one after the semi and at least be a 14/1 kind of surprise.

We won't see people like that Danish guy from 2000 making a fortune because he bet his salary on Denmark at something like 100/1 lol unless he did it very early, i hear some peple bet on france when it was at 70/1 and almost the same for uk so good for them if they win.

But now is Eurovision 2000 was today, i think that will all the blog about the rehearsals and media stuff from esctoday about how great the stage looked for denmark, good performance and strong crowd reaction, Denmark would have been much closer to 10 or 15/1 Like Finland was in 2006.

So i'm looking for surprises, but i will be very atonished if anything wins without being under 20/1 the day of the final.

"So i'm looking for surprises, but i will be very atonished if anything wins without being under 20/1 the day of the final."

You are right, its not going to happen - a winner at 20/1 or bigger. The bookies are geting better at assessing the ESC every year. Look no further than the top four but Hungary are the "dark horse" for sure. Sweden are not as popular(!!) as the bookies or polls suggest (top 8 but not top 2).

::uk and ::ie are always high because a lot of the betting sites are from ::uk so people there bet on their country to win. Also, the bookmakers make the odds based on how many people placed a bet on a country to win, because once you placed a bet you will surely vote for that country (E.g.: I placed a brt on ::uk and even if they are curently, only my 6th favourite, I will vote for them so I won't lose money). Let's remember Lordi - They were not topping the polls, and only 1 or 2 betting companies saw it as a potential winner (their odds only slightly increased after the rehearsals), and they were in low on most of them. Estonia 2001 and Latvia 2002 are yet examples. I think it will be very, very tight this year, but my opinion is that it will be between UK, France and Estonia (that is my personal top 3 as well :D)

EDIT: Oh, and Urban Trad were very low in the 2003 odds as well, and they almost won the contest.

The odds on Turkey are however a bit high considering that they always finish high no matter what they send.

Odds is as fun as statistics, and even though I really enjoy the french contribution I find it really hard imagining that entry becomming no.1. in a contest such as ESC. But hell, I'd be happily surprised if it wins,, not because it's favourite of mine, it's not, but because it shows that any music style, CAN win this contest and it will keep these, different styles comming in the future, which is rather fun in my opinion :)

Last year my realistic prediction for top 5, from first place to fifth, was: Denmark (1st), Romania, Germany, Armenia and Greece (5th). I really thought that Denmark was gonna win last year, especially when the first few votes were announced :mrgreen:

This year, I want to say that France (people like it), Azerbaijan (it's easy to like it), the UK (Nostalgia!!) , Sweden and Estonia (because of good staging) have a good chance. If I want to be bold though, I would want to say that Azerbaijan will win (if they have good live vocals).

Even though I like the Azerbaijani entry a lot, I don't think that it will trouble the top 5. It's not as good as last year.

France is last year's Slovakia. It will flop.

The UK. After listening to their live performance of the song I must say that they have 0 chances to enter the top 10. Hadise has been saved by the belly dancing. They will score points only if they will perform the song naked.

Sweden is a big kitsch and won't appeal to Eastern Europe. I doubt that Eric will qualify for the grand final

Turkey (Balkans)
Ukraine (Easten Europe)
Greece (Balkanics)
Finland (Skandinavia)
Serbia (Balkans)
Russia (Easten Europe)
Norway (Skandinavia)
Germany (Westen Europe)

I was right about last year's Slovakian flop (and please remember that everyone said that it will win). I also predicted right Croatia's flop. I was wrong though about Ireland. I really though Niamh could win it again (but I guess that it was because of the fact that "It's for you" was my favourite song of the year 2010...)

Let's look at the latest "ingredients" starting from 2008.
Usually the winner is someone uber-simple, someone who has horrible live vocals, someone with a primitive song, someone who appeals to teenagers, someone who's in the top-3, top-5 according to bookmakers (let's wait for the dress rehearsals).

The UK will win (or 2nd place) and France will be 9th or 8th. Ukraine will be 10th again. Azerbaijan will be 4th or 5th. Estonia will be 6th-7th as well as Russia (tbh they should stop worrying for finishing out of top-15, imo they have already reserved top-15 place forever). If Sweden qualifies he won't enter the top-10. Kitsch is dead + I agree that it won't appeal to Eastern Europe. I think that Slovenia has good chances for the top-10, as well as Turkey and Germany.

You clearly have no idea know how betting odds work.
Ok, maybe i should elaborate. Leader's odds this year vary around 5, what means you can earn 5 times as much as you bet if it wins. Betfair, which we quote here as most reliable source, works as a betting platform, not as a bookmaker, what means you place bets against other users who bet on the scenario opposite to yours. France's odds being on 5 means there are approximately as many people betting who believe its chances are above 20% as those who estimate it below 20% (assuming both sides bet the same sum to simplify things; in fact those are amounts of money both sides are ready to bet that are meant to be equal).

20%!

20% chance of victory! It doesn't mean "a clear winning with a big lead"!

Saying odds say nothing because the favourite didn't win last year is nonsense! If the leader is in average given odds varying around 5 (i don't know any stats about past years), they are meant to be "right" once a 5 years.

One more thing: if you're so sure about someone's odds being wrong, place a bet! After all, this is the fundament of betting: belief that the others are wrong. Only on Betfair there's already 279309€ in the game this year. On the forum you can speak out any predictions you want, no matter how unrealistic they are, but when it comes to spending money, people aren't that careless. That's why i'll always treat odds more seriously than some random user who just comes and says "the odds are wrong!"

I still thinking that Hungary will win, cause the ESC never was held in Central Europe before and for continental rotation it's up to a Central European try to win, no .. ?? because in the lastest years where are winners from:
So its time for an Central European country to win.. if not is Hungary, i thing that Poland it will be.
Never?
Well, Germany has hosted it twice and so has Switzerland, and Austria have hosted it once , so I wouldn't say never. :)

Yeah, they are considered Central Europe, at least geographically. I think some people may confuse it with Germany/Austria/Switzerland being Western countries culturally.

Having backed France at 7.6 on Betfair i see there are now much shorter on Eurovision Odds betting. My outsider is Denmark at around 25/1 who may not win but should get a few points.
1. France
2. Sweden
3. Azerbaijan
4 Denmark

I may well put a bet on ESC this year. Russia, Croatia and Romania seem like sensible choices to me. Not favourites, but could win.

Guys i dunno why manny think that Russia could win, if they won't will win ESC atfer 2018 World Cup, if even the same government itself has said he does don't want that happen, cause they will not continue to waste money....:lol::lol::lol:

I'm pretty certain that those three countries have absolutely NO chance of winning.

Ireland winning does sound nice, but I never trust the Google predictor. Jedward and Lena are very well known so of course they're going to be googled the most :)

Im very happy that the United Kingdom is a fairly solid second favourite :D. Also, we are the only one who's odds are shortening, France's are drifting so I have a tiny weeny bit of hope that come next week, we might overtake!! :mrgreen:

MyHeartIsYours
4th May 2011, 19:00
Yup lol, there is quite a few on 251/1 but Croatia is technically classed as the least favourite as its odds are drifting more than the others. Personally I think it's quite a nice song - of course this doesnt mean it's going to do badly - it could still get in the final and do well but just not win. There would have to be 251 Eurovision's for it to win once :lol:.
