View Full Version : How is Europe divided?

lucian-crusher

We started a conversation in the topic ,,Impact of Germany's victory" about this but it went off-topic so I crated this topic.

How is Europe divided?

This is how I know it:

1. Central Europe (are considered in Central Europe most of the countries that have the Danube): -de, -ch, -at, -pl, -cz, -sk, -hu, -ro, -md, -li

2. Southern Europe aka Mediteranean Europe (are considered in Southern Europe all countries whithin the Iberic Peninsula, the Italic Peninsula and the Balkanik Peninsula + all microstates except -li): -it, -es, -pt, -gr, -bg, -al, -mk, -ba, -rs, -me, -hr, -sl, -ad, -mt, -mc, -sm, Vatican City, -cy and -tr

3. Eastern Europe aka Continental Europe (are consiedered in Eastern Europe mostly all the countries from former U.S.S.R. except -md, and the Baltics, as 5 % of -kz is in Europe than it's an European country just like -ru): -am, -az, -ge, -kz, -by, -ua, -ru

5. Western Europe aka Atlantic Europe: -fr, -be, -lu, -nl, -uk, -ie

6. Northern Europe: -dk, -no, -se, -fi, -is, -lt, -lv, -ee

* Part of -ro called Dobrogea is in Southern Europe as it is located in the Balkan Peninsula
* Northern part of -rs is in Central Europe as it's not in the Balkans. So Pancevo is in Central Europe and Belgrade is in Southern Europe.

Well I think we are not divided anymore, we are all the same. :D

But if we are going to divide then I would say there are only 2 real divisions:
Western Europe
-ad -at -be -cy -dk -fi -fr -de -gr -is -ie -il -it -li -lu -mt -mc -nl -no -pt -sm -es -se -ch -tr -uk

Eastern Europe
-al -am -az -by -ba -bg -hr -cz -ee -ge -hu -lt -lv -mk -md -me -pl -ro -ru -rs -sk -sl -ua

imho, Moldova is not central.

btw, Western Ukraine is more Western than Moldova which means that this pretty big part can be considered as Central according to such logic =)

Well, I don't know what's the proper name and I don't really care either, but here Romanians, Bulgarians and Poles are considered as Eastern ;)

Acording to this -ro belongs in Central Europe and -md belongs in Eastern Europe. But as you can see -sl is a Central European country but is considered in Southern Europe because it's a Former Yugoslavian Republic. So as -md belonged to -ro in the past I think they can be cosidered Central Europe too.

You are right about the Western part of -ua, but that part is smaller than the Eastern part so I say it should be like this: -ua is a Eastern European country, but people fom Western part of -ua are in Central Europe.

AlekS

as Moldova belonged to Romania in the past... well Southern Ukraine belonged to Greece in the past
Moldova belonged to Russian empire in the past too.

so tell me please what do you want to know? political division or geographical?
Lithuania's major part is more Western than Moldova, they belong to EU, but it's considered Eastern ;)

as for geography - Belarus'... Western part is more Western than Moldova and it's not Northern enough so it can be considered Central as well =)

MyHeartIsYours

Maybe these divisions too:
Northern Europe
-dk -fi -is -no -se

Western Europe
-at -be -fr -de -ie -li -lu -nl -ch -uk

Eastern Europe
-am -az -by -cz -ee -ge -hu -lt -lv -pl -ru -sk -ua

SouthEastern Europe
-ba -bg -cy -hr -gr -il -mk -md -ro -rs -sl -tr

Southern Europe
-it -mt -mc -pt -sm -es

^ then UK should be considered Northern Europe too )))
imho, Lithuania is a perfect example of mixed zones. It can be classified as Eastern, it can be classified as Northern.

Ukraine is not completely Eastern and it's not completely Central.

I like this classification http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:CentralEurope.png
you can guess other regions for yourself )))

imo, dividing just on 5 zones would be too raw cuz there are countries which are situated in few of them.

Iceland is North Western. Spain, Andorra & Portugal are South Western, Turkey is South Eastern etc.

Geographically speaking, Europe is divided into 5 social - geographical regions: Western, Central, Northern, Eastern and Southern Europe!
Geographic Western Europe is not the same as the political Western Europe! West is the term used for those countries that have had a capitalist political system, as opposed to the notion of "East", which is used for the former socialist countries.
Coz the whole of Europe is now organized with the democratic capitalist state system, the political term "East" has lost his purpose.
The term "West" today, geopolitically speaking generally indicate a democratic and capitalistic countries of Christian orientation, so that today the whole Europe can be classified in the term "West".

Socio - geographical division of Europe:

Western (Athlantic) Europe: Ireland, United Kingdom, France and Benelux States (The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg).

Northern Europe: Scandinavia (Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland) and Estonia (coz Eesti in historical and social terms is much more closer to Finland than to Eastern Europe).

Central Europe: Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein and Slovenia!

South Europe is divided on two parts:
1. Southern Europe (european far south): Iberian Peninsula (Portugal, Spain and Andora), Monaco, Apennine pns (Italy, San Marino and Vatican City), extreme southern part of Balkan Peninsula (Greece) and Mediterranean islands nation (Malta, Cyprus).
Geological Malta is part of African land, and Cyprus is part of Asia.

2. South-eastern Europe: Balkan Peninsula states: Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and East Turkish Trace.
(Romania and Moldova are not on Balkans but on social way they belongs there)

Eastern Europe: ex Soviet countries (Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgian Abkhazia and small part of Kazakhstan western of Ural river)!

Just have to say..
Scandinavia only consists of Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
The Nordic countries consists of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland.

European part of Russia has area of about 4mln square km, which is almost 40% of whole Europe. We often forget about it and put line dividing east and west more to the west than it is geographically proper.
That line should divide continent into two parts having exactly the same area and I decided to find it. Assuming that it can't be further to east than eastern borders of Poland, I added areas of all countries that definitely had to be eastern: Finland, Estonia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria and european parts of Russia, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey.

I would have done the same with the west if I hadn't found sth strange. "East-for-sure" got area of 5,724,924 sq km, that is... 56% of area of the continent. I'm too lazy to check where is the south-north division, but it seems center of Europe lays somewhere in Ukraine or Belarus! :o

Regarding France, historically, it's divided in 3 big areas :
- the celtic area in the west (Britain) with an irish type of culture
- the southern area where they spoke the language of OC and have a spanish/italian culture
- the nothern area where they spoke the language of OIL and have a culture similar to the german one

after that, you can add corsica, euskaleria, flanders, alsace, all the islands,... which are areas with a strong cultural identity

It is well normal. They banned YouTube without democratic ways, they should consult the people's views.

Entering the YouTube is our right and we use it. Don't worry, we know what's bad or what's good for us. It is People's power. We depend our laws except dictatorial ones.

They tried so many times to ban YouTube, cause they knew we can enter there easily. But they failed. I think they should ban to Internet for that...

By the way, Their reasons for banning the YouTube that there are some videos which includes insults to Ataturk, maybe they're right but banning is not right way.

lol @ gas stealers.
it's NOT profitable for us at all, we would lose Russian gas and European contract as for transit so it makes no sense for any person with logic. Ukraine has the 3rd powerful transitional system in the world. The loss would be huge.

In any case Ukraine sued Gazprom and when it lost support on the West they "suddenly" became our best friend after that (even Russian officials faced that it was political crapfest before our elections in order to set up Yushchenko & Tymosenko). We saw Putin kissing, hugging and gigglng with Tymoshenko and talking like they are the best friends
Ukraine is not Latvia or Belarus, it's impossible to control us so much and change/abolish existing contracts whenever Gazprom wants + they shot themselves in the foot (they lost at least 20 billion euros because of losing us that year - Ukraine is the biggest consumer of the Russian gas xshrug ).

The new government surprisingly expressed their desire to decrease dependency of Russian gas - we signed contracts with other countries, we started renovating technologies on factories so Gazprom is even interested in good relationships now. As a result of that scandal - we increased the amount of our own gas, alternative sources, innovations etc and in the end we've got the least level of consuming of Russian gas during last 20 (!) years.
The moral to the story: instead of throwing crap and dividing countries better search for the ways how to collaborate. Right now Russia & Ukraine work together and I see more respect from the Russian side.
Instead of calling all Ukrainian a thieves (I heard that myself) Russian channels shoot promotional commercials about my country now.

^ I wouldn't mind officially including Estonia in the Nordic countries. You share so many cultural and historical similarities with the rest of us and especially linguistic similarities with Finland.

I don't really understand why Sem is the most popular boy's name in the Netherlands. The only Sem I know is a girl! XD

I agree about the girl most common name in ::ro being Maria; but I don't agree about Andrei as boys most common name. I think Alex is more common and I am sure that in 15 years from David will be the most common boys name here....

P.S.: Shouldn't Sopho be the most common name in ::ge? They already had 3 Sopho's in Eurovision

You can also check this on wikipedia. Alexandru seems to be the second most popular name in Romania. :)

I always thought most popular boy's name in Romania was Adrian:D

In Serbia, Lazar isn't most common boy name, I think it's Nikola/Milan
For girls it's not Milica...it is definitely Jelena.
But nowdays I see the trend of giving short names to children, smth like: Hana/Ema/Mila/Mia/Lea/Ana..(girls) and Vuk/Lav/Alek/Aleks (boys)
Especially Roma children have hilarious names sometimes (I blame parents).
I guess map isn't very accurate, but it's funny:D I like those maps:D

It's funny, the 2 most popular names in Spain are the names of our 2 last contestants in Eurovision (Daniel Diges and Lucía Pérez)

At least the Spanish names are correct, I've checked it in the Spanish Statistics Institute and the most common names in 2009 were:

Boys
1. DANIEL
2. ALEJANDRO (Ale, Alejandro...)
3. PABLO
4. HUGO
5. ALVARO
6. ADRIAN
7. DAVID
8. JAVIER
9. SERGIO
10. DIEGO

Girls
1. LUCIA
2. PAULA
3. MARIA
4. SARA
5. DANIELA
6. CARLA
7. CLAUDIA
8. MARTA
9. IRENE
10. SOFIA

What does 'gabachos' mean??

Gabacho means "coward" or something similar. French are called like that in Spain since Napoleon's army was beated in Spain and they had to run away.
