Icelandic television broadcaster RÚV has already announced changes to Söngvakeppnin 2011.
In a letter to the Association of Icelandic songwriters; Páll Magnússon, the managing director of Icelandic television broadcaster RÚV has announced that all entries to Söngvakeppnin 2011 shall be performed entirely in Icelandic - claiming that it's an Icelandic song contest intended for the entertainment of Icelandic television viewers.

The statement has recieved mixed feelings amongst the Icelandic public, who for the most part support and prefer the Icelandic Eurovision entires to be performed in English.

To the relief of many, the letter goes on to say;

"However, while Söngvakeppnin is still the method for choosing the nation's representative for the Eurovision Song Contest, RÚV will remain true to it's obligations by providing financial support towards the translation of the entry - should that be the wish of the chosen entrant."

Whether 2011 will see Iceland performing in its native Icelandic for the first time since Paul Oscar's 1997 entry Minn hinnsti Dans remains a mistery for now.

Iceland announces search for 2011 entry

Icelandic television broadcaster RUV, has announced the opening of it's search for Iceland's 2011 Eurovision Song Contest entry. The nation took second place in 2009 and reached the Eurovision Song Contest final for the third year running in Oslo last May.

As in previous years Iceland will choose it's Eurovision Song Contest representative through Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins - scheduled to take place in the first two months of 2011.

Additional details were announced earlier today and esctoday.com can confirm that composers have until midnight on October 18th to send in their entries. The selection process is open only to residents of Iceland. Icelandic composers are however allowed to collaberate with composers residing outside Iceland and each composer may enter a maximum of three songs.

The specific format of Söngvakeppnin 2011 has not been chosen, but will be announce in due time. You can find link to the site containing the application form and specific rules in the links section.

I think it's great that the rules said it should be performed in Icelandic.

The more native languages the better... i'm personally bored to death with English in every song. So boring, so souless. EUROvision or ANGLOvision?

Yes but they will sing in icelandic when they choose the song but will they translate it later in english for Eurovision? I hope not! They ruin the songs when they translate them!
Examples, Sweden 1999 (they won but the song in swedish is better), 2000, 2001, 2004, 2006...

Translations are so dumb and just as you mention in most cases it just destroys the entries.

As for Sweden we sometimes suck at translations (2000+2004) but 2001 and 2006 were ok translations though.

But in 99% of the cases translations just destroys the songs.

Well agree about the "ok translations" of 2001 and 2006 but still, I prefer the songs in swedish.

Seriously sometimes I really wish they bring back the language rule!

My personal opinion is that a language rule shouldn't be brought back. I prefer to see "sing in whatever language you want/like", but I do encourage an attempt to make singing in your native language more popular. I also like to hear different things in different languages, than listening to (almost) everything in English. So, it should be an option, but more native language songs are more than welcome.

I actually agree with that the rule shouldn't be brought back, but on the other hand in some way the English take-over is destroying the very soul of this contest.

I think the juries should encourage native langugaes, so far the juries are voting like morrons though (they vote for everything that could turn ESC into some random American Idol rip-off) but hopefully they get to their senses and start understanding what this contest should be all about (EUROPE) so I think it should be in the juries directives to favor songs in native languages also.

Actually, I'm one of those who think they quite often leave their best entries at home.

The biggest loss was in 2007 when they send some really crap song instead of this one;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3lDAu-1coc

I'm glad though that they decided to stick with Icelandic, and hoepfully they won't translate to ESC either.

A song like "Segdu Mer" could be great!

Have Iceland every send an ethnic sounding entry?

A.B.
26th November 2010, 20:56
Selma Björnsdóttir! I don't understand how could she fail to qualify for the final in Kyiv. It was a big shock! Send her back to the ESC. She clearly deserves a Eurovision victory in her Curriculum Vitae!

Yeah she deserved qualification! That was clearly one of the least fair moments of ESC during the last decade for sure!

But that would be her 3rd time already?

Schlagerman1
26th November 2010, 22:05
Well she made a horrible performance to be honest and every time I look at it I forget about the song..so I guess many forgot her back then.

Selma has done her part in ESC, I would more likely see Yohanna, Euroband or even Silvia Night back in ESC then her, cause they are more contemporary. But best would be to see some new artist, giving something completly different from what Iceland usually sends! :)

A-lister
26th November 2010, 23:34
^

I don't think it was that bad, and the song really deserved to qualify. I agree though that she has done her part for now.

As for Euroband being "contemporary", I can't agree. Their song was very passé sounding. I doubt Iceland will send that character Silvia Night again, and hopefully they'll spare us

As for Yohanna i'm all for it though! :) I found that entry a bit boring at first, but she really made an impressive performance.

Is it true was ok, but I think it's easy to find a song better than that one because the song itself was nothing special really, a decent ballad more or less. But Yohanna made a great impression and the song is good for radio, that's why I think it faired so well.

I hope for an uptempo song or a more original sort of ballad this time around though. Now the entries will be in Icelandic so that could be interesting aswell.

Yohanna is very good looking and has a great voice, with the right song I'm all for a comeback (although I'm usually opposed to comebacks in Eurovision).

I heard about the 2 qualified songs. The song of Haraldur is nothing special - nice but a little bit boring. This song would never have a chance.

Yohannas song is for me stronger than "Is It True?", despite the Icelandic lyrics. If Yohanna wins, she almost "has" to sing in English, cause otherwise will people think "Why did she sing in Icelandic?" more than hearing the song.

Even if it is good already, I don't feel worried of the english lyrics, cause is it some language that can change from the native to english, than it is just Icelandic! Everytime a Icelandic song has won Söngvakeppni, the songs almost better in english than in Icelandic, so that is why I think that if (well, I can't see anyone beat that one) Yohanna wins, then it is no problem changing the language! :)

Sigurjón died suddenly last night at home in Garđabć, most probably because of a heart attack.

I agree with everything that you said!

This should be the song for Düsseldorf :) And I hope that she doesn't have any backing singers, or if she has to, a better set of backers. The backers totally ruined the end :( :( It distracts the audience from Yohanna's great voice.

Assuming that this song goes to Düsseldorf, I could see this pulling a spot on top5 or something. This song is already miles ahead of the other countries that have released their songs so far.

And for me 'Is It True?' wasnt depressing, it was just emotional and beautiful - my favourite Eurovision song by a long way!

Both Yohanna and "Eldgos" are good but in two completly different ways!

Yohanna seems to lift every song she sings live to higher levels and "Nótt", that was already a nice song, really fits her voice! And I may be one of the few that agrees with her, that she has to sing in English if she goes to ESC, cause otherwise will people not understand it (too bad, cause it is really beautiful in Icelandic).

"Eldgos" may be one of the weirdest songs ever, but I really like this madness! :D If Iceland wants to try out something completly different, this is their chose for sure! ;)

This part, of course:

If you win, what language will you perform the song in at the Eurovision Song Contest?

We haven’t decided yet, we haven’t won the competition, so let’s go one step at a time. The song was actually written in English and I personally think it’s better in English, but it’s up to the writers. If I do win, I’d love to perform it in English at the end of the final, but right now, it’s just a dream.

Well, it's boring cos everyone speaks it, DUH!

That "Eldgos" song is odd on so many different levels. It has no structure and as it progresses, it confuses you. :| I believe that Brink's song will win. The country is small, everybody knew him. He will definitely get sympathy votes. I do hope that the song is nice.

If Brink's song ends up winning, I'm not too sure if he'll end up getting sympathy votes from the European public, maybe but a slimmer chance.

The song itself has it's merits, it's a decent song, but I would prefer Yohanna over them who IMO is the best among the finalists. Still, the friends have good voices, and their song is not bad at all. Ughh, I wanted my Yohanna to rep Iceland :D

It's a nice song and it's quite different for ESC but if they're hoping they'll get sympathy votes they just won't, unless Europe's commentators are feeling nice enough to tell their audience what happened :p 3

What in the... so what if the song had a nice message behind it? Ultimately, the general Eurovision audience won't care and they'll vote it out of the final. I don't think the juries will care either. It'll just sound like a weird mish-mash between swing, jazz, bluegrass and pop to most people. I can't believe this entry beat out Yohanna. Sure, Yohanna's entry is a bit dated, but it would've done better at Eurovision.

Vote not for backstories but for good songs and artists.

It doesn't have big chances to reach the final, though with Yohanna Iceland would've been in top 5.

The Icelandic viewer chose this song. Of what reason, is none of your busyness. Sjonni is a loved one musician in Iceland and if someone vote for his song, witch is a very good song, to honour his memory, then respect it!! His song is more than qualified to be in this contest and I am so happy they are going and NOT Johanna.

As I said, non-Icelandic viewers won't care why the Icelandic people chose this song. All they'll care about is whether or not it appeals to them. And it most probably won't appeal to the general audience.

If you wanna honour his memory, please do so. But don't be surprised or upset when the rest of Europe doesn't choose to do the same. Eurovision is not about honoring people's memories.

Think of the bigger picture. The fact that this entry won the Icelandic national final probably sealed Iceland's fate as a non-qualifier this year. The smaller picture says: "Sjonni Brink's memory was honoured". The bigger picture says: "Europe won't care and Iceland's gonna be 15th or something in their semi-final this year".

I hoped too that Sjonni song will go. I haven't listen other Iceland NF songs, then I don't know how good other were or not. Other singers have got many other possibilities to try for Iceland, but Sjonni don't. So, I'm happy that his song won, even when its not anything amazing, but not also bad. I like it =)

I think they should definitely keep this song in Icelandic. I don't really get why everyone has to translate their songs all the time! What if a winning song would change melody before the Eurovision? I mean that's just as insane :p

Well it will then not be the first time a song won't appeal to the general audience. And maybe the small picture is more imported?? But what happens, the song is still a very good song... and I'm very happy it won!

The song is definately not the worst chosen...there are worse. However I see the same situation as for "Razom nas bahato" in Ukraine in 2005. The song has been chosen by Ukrainian emotions due to Orange Revolution and it finished very low. I think this will stay in the semi.

Keep it in Icelandic!!!; that's the ONLY thing making it a little more interesting imo.

This just proves that Iceland is a very small nation. Yes, his death was very tragic and it's a nice thing to honor him this way, but this is a song contest and like has been said; Europe will not bother.

May he rest in peace though.

YES, Iceland put Yohanna in her place! That anglophone bitch. And her song was definitely worse! This is such an enjoyable song and I hope it remains in Icelandic. I love all the instruments, reminds me a bit of Romania's song this year, though the arrangement is different. 8 points.

Yeah, I'm happy Yohanna didn't won either, but I was rooting for Eldgos though :/ That was the most interesting one imo.

But now, hopefully we'll get the entry in Icelandic *cross fingers*.

Yohanna said from the get-go that she would translate her song to English if she won, I hope that won't be the case with this one.

Before I say my opinion on the song, I must repeat that, once again, I feel really sorry for Brink, he passed away too soon and it is a tragedy. I really like the gesture that his friends gave him in this NF. But as for the song winning the NF - I think it wouldn't even qualify to the Iceland final (from the semi) if it was sung by Brink himself, and it managed to win the whole thing just because people felt sad and voted for it, because of sadness and despair. Maybe they also liked it, but the tragedy factor is dominant here, no doubt about that.

I don't like this song, and I liked both Magni's and especially Yohanna's entry (my fave) much much better. No final for Iceland this year, and I am sure it is heading bottom 5. Just like people before me said, Europe will not vote for the story behind the song, but for the song itself.

Because ultimately, the national finals should be about selecting the entry you believe to have the greatest chances of winning or at least doing well at Eurovision. Or at least to vote forth the best song according to your tastes. Handing the victory out due to sympathy? Not really the purpose.

Yes, what a bad person Yohanna is for wanting to translate her song into English. Bad, bad Yohanna. It's not like pretty much every single song that won Eurovision in the aughts was in English.

No, but it shows a trend. And how out of line you are for calling Yohanna a bitch simply because she wants to translate her song into English. You're not even Icelandic. What right do you have to be pissed that Yohanna didn't intend to perform her entry in Icelandic had it won the Icelandic national final?

It's not like the Icelandic aren't used to it. Iceland hasn't had its entry performed in English since 1997, when Paul Oscar staged a BDSM orgy on stage (yes, Iceland has performed in English ever since 1999, when the rule that each country could perform in any language it wishes to perform it was instated). I guess every artist since 1999 is a bitch by your standards.

Don't like that my country choice this song because of sympathy and I find it was wrong decision for RUV to allow it to take part in the contest after the death of the composer/performer. It could have been performed as a tribute on the final night but it was really unfair for other contestants that it was part of the voting competition.
The discussion here in Iceland about the song and the national final has been really strange and skewed because of these unfortunate circumstances.

I hope though that it will do good in Germany but I'm not optimistic!

Aftur Heim actually topped the icelandic charts so maybe they actually voted for their favorite song afterall? Although Sjonni Brink's version is at number 1...not the version of his friends.

The organisation of the Icelandic national selection for Eurovision 2011, Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins, has informed esctoday.com that Sjonni's friends won the competition with more than 25% of the votes cast (exactly 26.33%). Second was Magni Ásgeirsson with 19%.
A total of 96,651 votes were cast in order to select the Icelandic representative in Eurovision 2011. There was a limit of 20 votes for each phone number.

Sjonni's friends, the group that eventually won the competition with the song Aftur heim by Sigurjón Brink, picked a total of 25,449 votes, which makes 26.33%. Magni Ásgeirsson, runner up, got 18.506 (19.15%).

RÚV has informed esctoday.com that the other songs' scores will remain confidential.
