View Full Version : The worst ESC of the 00's

So which year do think it was the worst? Personally I don't like 2007. It's like the black year of the ESC (if there's such thing in english). It feels so strange when I recall 2007. I don't know.... I don't like listening to songs of 2007 even though I had 4-5 favourites.

It's pretty obvious it's, either 2000, or 2001 for me. Didn't like the stages, scoreboards, maybe the hosts or the songs were sort of weird and forgettable (of course, not all of them). In the end, my vote goes to 2001.

Worst with no doubt 2002.
You don't ask it but, the best in my opinion have been 2003 and 2007 (in a lower level 2009)

2000 or 2001 were my favourites.

2002 had the greatest number of songs i actually liked in an ESC, with the possible exception of 2008 (and it has nothing to do with it taking place in Estonia). I would say 2004 or 2005 or so, but around these years was sort of a gap where I didn't really pay attention to ESC, so It might have not been that bad.

It's funny...I feel exactly the same way about that year. Maybe because of the fact that the bloc-voting issue kinda escalated that year after the semi-finals. Songwise I had nothing against 2007, but there were too much political talking that year and generally there seemed to be a different atmosphere around the contest that year. So yeah...I guess I would label 2007 "the black year" of the decade too. :P

To me, 2007 was the worst, when you watch the voting on Youtube...
But I voted 2006. Except Lordi, nothing was good.

I agree for 2010. The hosting wasn`t great at all. Norwegians sure have to learn what a good hosting means...
And the songs last year OMG were disasters...

2011 wasn`t great too... the hosting was great, but the songs...uhlala

2007 leaves a sour taste in the mouth.
2011 2006 2003 and 2000 were great because Ireland did well :D.
But in terms of my favourites, 2010 was good (except for Sweden not qualifying and the criminally underrated Cyprus)

Yamarus

2000-2001-2002. Those were the years when the Eurovision transitionned from the old-fashioned song contest of the Nineties to the commercial mega show of the 2000's, and that transition isn't pretty.

JackBauer

I must say 2002, i'm sorry because i have an infinite tenderness towards Estonia.

But the stage was too small, the presentaters were awful, and the fairytales postcards were a bad idea in my opinion.

And if that wasn't enough the voting let them down completely when one of the most average song won (but best performances i admit one) and let all the good songs fighting for top ten

Latvia did so much better one year later!

I voted for 2002 too. I didn't really like the hosts, the songs were OK at best (except for Ira Losco and Sahlene which were fantastic songs), the stage looked too small for a large event. If Estonia were to host again, I'm sure they'd do better :)

I can't decide if it's 2001, 2002, 2007 or 2008.

I think I'll take 2001, because it's not only about the meeeeeh songs, but also about the set-up of the contest. I expected Denmark to do better.

I am also very unhappy about 2005, but it's only about the winner. 2005 had a lot of awesome songs!

Based on (a) what I listen to these days, and (b) the result, I'd have to vote for 2007.

Presentation wise though it has to be 2001 for the venue choice and presenters

Yes, a great thread! I must say it was 2007 when Finland was hosts. The stage was a small, ugly and (the motto was: true fantasy) the stage had no fantasy/great design what so ever. The voting was horrible, many good songs ended up last and there was many fantastic songs that did not make it in the semifinal. Also Sweden had a horrible performance. The '' postcards '' was badly designed and the middle-acts was just weird. And after the winner (a great song :D) had won, Santa came up at the stage?

rajo
7th May 2012, 20:59
Why Finland? The hosts were cute, the stage awesome, the scoreboard as well. The only thing that really sucked was this Swedish shitband. :D

I cheered so much for Mans Zelmerl÷w... :(

Give or take a few gems, 2002 was painful! I never listened to the CD in full.

2001 was weak too, although if I were to judge the hosts & stage then 2001 wins hands down!!

2006! I don't love any song from that year, the only 00s year that this happened!

2000 and 2007 were bad too, but I didn't vote for 2000 since I wasn't following ESC that closely, and in 2007 I loved 2 songs, among my all time favorites!!

2001 was bad in general too, but there are a couple of songs that are among my all time favorites as well, and it had more listenable songs than 2000!

2002 & 2006 contests are the worst for me (in organization generally). But the songs in 2002 were better than 2006. I like only 4-5 songs from 2006 that we had 37 songs in total and from 2002, I like at least 10-12 songs from around 22-24 songs that we had that year.

For me definetly 2001 and 2002. I don't know which one is worse from these two  Both were utterly horrible on every possible level starting from the songs, venues to the hosts themselves.

I have to agree with you on 2002, those hosts were pretty cheesy, the stage was alright but underwhelming. The only thing I like about 2002 was Ira Losco xheart.

Oh yeah that's definitely true. For me 2003 is the turning point of ESC, I feel like the stage, hosts and songs have become a bit more modern and a bit less kitch that year.

I hope not, if Estonia wins again, which I'm sure they will, I think they've learned their lesson

Imo, 2001 was by far the worst. Ugly stage, unbearable presenters and, above all, a terrible bunch of songs. There were only 2-3 entries that were at the very least ok. Oh, and quite possibly one of the worst ESC winners as well.

Also, sometimes I get confused when I think of 2007 and 2008, it seemed like Serbia was trying its hardest to mimic everything Finland did. Stages were very similar at least. Finland did it better.

Milos-BC
12th October 2012, 09:38
^^ I agree that 2007 and 2008 stages were too similar. That is what I didn't like either.

Our stage was supposed to be something different, and it does have a symbolic on two rivers Belgrade lays on (Sava and Danube rivers), but in the end it turned out like a copy of 2007 stage (which, as far as I remember, was taken from some Finish novel and represented a fish).

I liked both of these stages on their own way though.

Hard to pick. Either 2001 or 2007.

2001 was only dark and bad. Weak winner, slow songs, uninspired lame stage and bad presenters. Really awful contest. And the Swedish song was a ripoff (Bert Karlsson payed 100 000 sek to avoid lawsuits).

2007 was upsetting and almost made UK, Germany and France to drop of from the competition alltogether (stated that "The balkans are just voting on each other"). As a result of the crisis: Jury groups were incorperated in the votings. The winner was weak. A "trolololol song" came 2nd, the overall atmosphere was too dark and there were too many rockbands, clearly inspired by the later years chocker: Lordi. People went rampage on the forums and some argued that the competition must be split in two: One for Eastern Europe/Balkans and one for Western Europe. The Ukrainian entry almost destroyed the whole competition, and thankfully, the Jurygroups prevented further disasters. "We are the winners of eurovision!" Nope. Not this time!

About 2000-2002 I can't judge because I wasn't interested in ESC, I rather spent my time with playing with toy cars
My memories about 2003 are very weak.
However, I didn't like ESC 2005 and 2007. Bad winner songs, bad voting, bad songs in general. I wasn't impressed by the atmosphere as well.
The winner song of 2008 was disappointing too, but at least some other songs had a good level regarding entertainment, especially This is my life and El Chiki chiki

Considering the songs, 2007 was the worst.

My favorite in 2007 apart from Molitva is Montenegro's Hajde Kroci.
