Welcome, everyone.

This is going to be a bit of a different stay for me in a few ways. All of the other countries/regions I've had are places for which I have some kind of special affection: I grew up in and love California, the Midwest is my favorite region of the country, New York has a lot in the city that's special to me (Broadway, for instance - shame, then, that I didn't send a single showtune xheat), London was the first place in the UK I ever went and something I aspired to for a long time, and Kaliopiland is, well, Kaliopiland. I actually haven't been in my remembered life to Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, or Louisiana, and as places, I don't (yet) feel any kind of special love for them. THAT BEING SAID. They have some of the best musicians in the country and the world, and I can't wait to share some of them with you. Additionally, there's a version of my stay where I send 3 songs from the 21st century, which hasn't happened since Kaliopiland Round 1.

This stay will also focus on showing you all genres very classically and quintessentially of this region and of the USA. "Does that mean country? xheat" pipes up a Mr. Rain E. Woods from the back. Yes, it does (UPDATE: did!) mean country. For our first entry, though, we'll be going with a very fun piece of modern New Orleans jazz.

Hey, good luck Calvin with your new region. I'm sure the bone will be good. Just remember that every good movie must have bone, and that every good bone must have movie.

P.S. Did you know i'm rather into pretty men in glittery jackets that perform synth pops? It's become quite the thing of late. I hope you like them too.

WV 68: Trombone Shorty - "Fire & Brimstone"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLfsLx04GjE
Lyrics:

Broken dreams, held together with glue
I got to keep on trying till that day they come true
I know that all my life I've been tired and blue
But still I keep on fighting, I got too many things left to do

[Chorus:]
See my brother told me so, you'll be the greatest man
alive when I'm gone
So there's music in my bones in my heart and in my soul
And till I'm through and God takes me home
Everything that comes out of my trombone
Is fire and brimstone, fire and brimstone
fire and brimstone, fire and brimstone

Shotguns blast, you hear it ring so loud
Followed by the sirens happens all year round
But we gotta keep on surviving, they can't bring us down
I'm just trying to stay alive and pick my feet up off the ground
Well it's like it's raining, raining, everyday
We can't keep waiting, waiting for the world to change

[Chorus]

Alright everyone. I have two options for next edition's NF, which will ultimately be my 20th edition.
A) 5 miserable, difficult to listen to folk ballads (all of which are super special to me).
B) 6 songs encompassing pop (but, like, with my Robert DeLong hat on more than my Lady Gaga hat on), various varieties of instrumentals, and a jazz standard.

It's not a matter of "which do you want?" but rather "which do you want first?"

Eulaliya

Option B for me because variety rocks.

Lupus

B without a shadow of doubt. Variety and massively varying styles are some of your trademarks and it would be a shame to miss out on the opportunity to celebrate your 20th edition with something that is so essentially "Calvin at WV".

Welcome, everyone, to ::wscs' first national final! I hope you enjoy the songs on offer that could be my 20th entry as a WV juror.

Song #1: Barry White - Love's Theme

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNS3YarjeQc

*Says he's taking a break from disco* *puts founding song of the genre in NF two editions later*
This song was on one of the first CDs I owned, so it's a longtime favorite. To me, the song personifies grand romance and makes me super happy to listen to. Hoping you enjoy it as well!

Song #2: DAWN - Pretty Wicked Things

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsuKEmWQvnk

Off of one of my favorite albums in recent memory, DAWN's Goldenheart, "Pretty Wicked Things" is one of the strangest, most fractured pop songs that I've ever heard. With this, I might be aching to win the "Most Upvotes That Become Downvotes Ever" Award at the LL. The song pulses through my soul whenever I listen to it and has an almost cleansing effect. Hope some of y'all get the same feeling!

Song #3: W.G. "Snuffy" Walden - West Wing Suite

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJrxrQ-5QoI

Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing just about ran my life for a few years. Every single moment of the score to it makes my heart ache with nostalgia and is filled with such majesty; there's a moment that can get me to tear up when I'm in the right mood. I hope some of y'all connect to it!

Song #4: Patti Page - Let Me Go Lover

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbSEalRBHQc

Ah, Patti Page. One of my Oma's favorite singers, her voice was always around growing up. This song is a special stand out for numerous reasons, including her more mature performance on the song and the tragedy of the lyrics, which hint at abuse in a time when that's all songwriters could do. The elegant package it has musically takes on a rather haunting quality. Hoping you all take it in and feel touched by it too!

Song #5: Explosions in the Sky - First Breath After Coma

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0o8JCxjjpM

When I was 16, I took part in a school production of a new play, a (gender-flipped, modern) retelling of the Orpheus myth. As the Eurydice character passed back into the underworld, this was the song that played.

Song #6: Dragometry - Rectangle Girls of the World

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVoy1m14RBQ

From long to short, from post-rock to synthpop, from heavy to fun. We close today with Dragometry, one of the most mesmerizing things I've ever seen in my life. Drag and its famed reality competition show really helped me out at a time in my life when I was struggling, and so while on the surface a beautiful, comical train wreck, this song is strangely special. Hoping y'all have some fun with it!

So. 20 editions. 29% of WV's history. Time sure flies, doesn't it? Thank you all for making WV such an integral and joyous part of my life - it has been the time of my existence to spend so much time with y'all, share the music that means the most to me, and discover so much of what the musical world has to offer (including some of my own songs!).

Favorite song? "The Great Beyond." No question. "That song is a part of my life" doesn't cut it for how I feel about "The Great Beyond" - that song IS my life. I was a little apprehensive about sending it because I wasn't sure what people would think and didn't know if I could take the criticism that really is just part of the game. Everything from those opening chords to the outro feels so special, creative, and emotional, and it was a pleasure to have a forum (ba dum tss) to share it with you all.

Favorite entry? "Proud." That was such fun to send. It was the start of a really cool colaboroten with Robert, we had the intro video that everyone loved, and we spent the entire edition bouncing Miranda jokes off each other, letting loose, and having a blast.

Favorite result? That surprise qualification for "Let Go." Robert gave me serious amounts of freedom during our scandal colaboroten, and I decided to take that freedom to send that song that meant a lot to me. For years, whenever I was feeling perturbed or angry or hurt or disappointed, I'd let that song take me away and bring me into its world, so it was a really special 'un. I didn't think it had a prayer at WV but wanted to share it anyway. Moments before the results show, I spoke to RainyWoods and told him that even though I'd felt really blessed by my WV results up until that point, I might actually feel a little wistful if that missed. The surprise of it not doing so was incredible, and I remember being so full of love and gratitude for everyone who made it happen. These artists and songs I'm sending are really quite special, and I'm amazed at how much love has come my way over the last 20 editions. 7/19 and soon to be 7/20 may not look like a spectacular number, but I thought it'd be WAY lower.

So what can you expect in the next 20? Well, in a way more of the same. What I'm most proud of in my WV career is the sheer number of genres I've sent, and I'll continue the short attention span method that I've been using for these 20. A few notes: there'll definitely be country. It's kind of shameful how I haven't sent any country given how much I love it. There'll also be jazz - same thing, and it'll probably come in the form of Kai and Fer's favorite - bossa nova! :D :D :D :D Opera and classical will definitely also be involved, if I can brave it. Next edition is probably (making no promises) the aforementioned folk/country NF.

My ranking of my songs (special added feature)
1. The Great Beyond
2. Let Go
3. Fantasy
4. No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)
5. Because the Night
6. First Breath After Coma
7. Mrvica
8. Bad Romance
9. Carry On
10. Someday We’ll Linger in the Sun
11. Bel Den
12. Fire & Brimstone
13. Proud
14. Shila
15. Don’t Wait Up
16. Tesko Bez Tebe
17. Deli Divane
18. Missionary Man
19. Dreamin’
20. Lice Od Naslovna

tl;dr thank you all for 20 wonderful editions, and here's to many more! xlove Play us out, Rezarta!

I love this little period right now where I'm super pumped for two different entries. So here's what our next NF will be:
1) Four songs, all by solo artists, two men, two women.
2) It's not going to be among my more diverse NFs; it's all ballads with prominent guitar lines. This is why it's only four songs; the genre can be difficult for some to swallow, and thematically, none of the songs are easy listening.
3) While originally imagined as a country NF, there's only one honest to god country song in the bunch, and if sung with a different accent, it would have no business being called country.
4) All four of these songs are longtime favorites which, despite their subject matter, give me that warm, fuzzy, homey feeling. They're each dear in their own way.
5) There's one from Texas, one from Louisiana, one from Arkansas, and one from Arkansas singing about Kansas so Oklahoma by law of averages, which encompasses all four states that WSCS contains. :)

b) A well-regarded diva butchering Mandarin, a musical setting of the ancient text that, as a kid, built my lifelong fascination with them, and my first film score (that I would've sent - not the first one I ever heard :p ).
Any preferences?

Oh don't worry about it dahling! In fact, the margin was convincing enough and your comments in the LL were such that votes wouldn't change the winner, so if you want to send them in and it'd clear your conscience, I'd count them and could just counterbalance them if through some miracle they do change the winner. :p Thank you for your well wishes and can't wait for this new edition; looks like it could be pretty stellar xheart

WV 70: Glen Campbell - "Wichita Lineman"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsVn-FH-814

Lyrics:

I am a lineman for the county and I drive the main road
Searchin' in the sun for another overload
I hear you singin' in the wire, I can hear you through the whine
And the Wichita Lineman is still on the line

I know I need a small vacation but it don't look like rain
And if it snows that stretch down south won't ever stand the strain
And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time
And the Wichita Lineman is still on the line

And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time

A couple of things in this lovely period where I'm pumped for two entries at once! Firstly, a rendition of our current entry courtesy of ex-Calvin WV artist REM! Tbqqqqqqqqqh I'm not sure I think it's quite the sum of its parts, but that's a rather unfair standard, and it's definitely worth sharing. :D

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QutLsCCY2yw

Secondly, if your main complaint about our current entry is "meh too old," you ain't seen nothin' yet. Our next NF will be a 4-song tour through 4 different types of music native to the US and perfected (or even originated) in this fair region, all of which were recorded before our current entry. There'll be gospel courtesy of Mahalia Jackson, early rock & roll courtesy of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, jazz courtesy of Louis Armstrong and a very special guest, and Tejano folk courtesy of Lydia Mendoza.

I have a great track record when it comes to ruining enhancing peoples NFs with my votes, and my suggestions always go down a treat with WorldVision players who choose to send songs and artists i've offered. Just ask Connor, ShoeFlo and Neko. Who could forgot Crystal Kay, John Grant, Brandy, the time I made Tilbury win Flo's NF and also the time I made clear that "Write On Me" was the Fifth Harmony song to slay the contest with.

That was just tooooo much emotion for WorldVision to handle. Baby steps followed by us pushing for a new rule that allows entries to return to the contest. Anna Oxa's "Processo a me stessa" will then win WorldVision, and be crowned the most emotion song of all time.

That was just tooooo much emotion for WorldVision to handle. Baby steps followed by us pushing for a new rule that allows entries to return to the contest. Anna Oxa's "Processo a me stessa" will then win WorldVision, and be crowned the most emotion song of all time.

All I'm going to say that if next edition we go to the final #WithoutYou, I'll blame Kai :p

I just stopped by here to say you ruled this edition with an unique NF and a very daring entry sent to the semifinal.
I wish I had more time to vote and support your entry in SF3, but just to feel less guilty I think my 12 wouldn't have made any difference, sadly.

I'm looking forward to seeing your next entry xrose

Oh Cesar, this lovely message made me quite happy xheart You're a gem of a WV player because you take the daring approach every single edition and give zero shites about how others are going to react; you should be an inspiration to more people.

In re Sister Rosetta, it's quite flattering to have had your support, points counted or not. Take a spot in the 12s Hall of Fame xheart

"What the fuck gives?"

There's a parallel reality where this song actually won WV

Ahoy hoy everyone! So in a scahoy hoyandalous #tbt turn of events, I've as of now sent 50 songs to WorldVision or spinoffs! I would do a big super indulgent evening except 1) Kai & I already did that and 2 (more importantly since I'm always up for extra self-indulgence) ) exams xcry1. BUT at the very least, here're all of them in a handy dandy playlist!

Also I promise to use this occasion to start making banners when I have spare moments.

And so, I depart this lovely place. While I may have to defer my Melinda Does A Lot dream, it has been a joy to share WSCS pronounced Åsks' music with you xheart I'll for SURE be back, as will Mindy Doo.

So, have you sent your entry already?
If so, I hope it's Give. Give me Give please. Thank you.

I guess I could put this here since WSCS Pronounced Åsks is still mine (for now...) :D

So at one point this week I'm going to be doing a plug evening with the 35 songs I sent to the main WV game. I'm SOMEWHAT flexible on dates, so if you'd like to come but there are ones that wouldn't work for you, please do let me know!
