View Full Version : Next "Unlikely" Music Genre to win

While many Eurovision winners have been from genres such as ballad/pop/schlager etc. occasionally there is a "shock" winner from a music genre that has not won before, such as Finland's victory with a hard rock song in 2006. In 2013, the BBC produced a documentary entitled "How To Win Eurovision", part of which looked at "musical styles to avoid!" Which of the five genres named in this segment (listed in the poll above) will be the first to win the Eurovision Song Contest?

Acapella is the only one I could see winning at this moment in time, although maybe rap if it were watered down for the mainstream appeal.

I agree with dear revallsay. Calypso is gonna be a thing. Prepare your bodies. Let's limbo!

I agree Acapella would be the most "reasonable" music genre likely to win (out of the few choices this poll offers) because it relies on vocals only (and we know how much vocals are valued with juries and stuff), it's not as much connotated and "niche" as the others. I just wished Eurovision would go crazier musically: I'd like to see (and hear) jazz fusion, tropical house or symphonic metal one day  Probably not gonna happen though. Being different does not automatically means being good, but more variety (that is, more room for other genres than pop) wouldn't hurt tbh.

If Romania win tonight, that will tick off two of the genres on this poll!

Like in 2006 next year Jupiter (trends in fashion and music) is in the enigmatic sign of Scorpio.

2006, Hard Rock performed by corpses won.

2018 might see Hard Rock winning again. Or a provocative performance full of sexual innuendos. Something that makes you shiver or slightly uncomfortable becomes the trend.
Or a dramatic ballad about perseverance, if ESC takes place in the first 3 weeks of May (rule of Taurus = ballads). Yulya Samoylova, I hear you!

None of the genres stated above looks promising next year. But maybe in 2019, which looks more diverse again. Calypso or Reggae might have a shot then.

I wish it was ska. But we don't even have ska. The last time we got close to it was Turkey 2004 I guess, even it wasn't exactly ska.

A reggae-sounding song came close in 1987 (Wind's second entry for Germany)

Reggae doesn't sound European. I can't imagine any European country that would choose reggae for it's entry.
Yodelling doesn't sound as modern music.
Calypso - the same reason as for reggae.
Acapella - is it even possibly to participate with a no-music song?
That's why I choose rap music. By the way, rap music is close to pop-music by popularity. So I vote for this.

Trip-hop, perhaps? Although hell knows how does one define it nowadays.

I'd probably vote for Rap tbh, Yodelling had plenty of time trying to win, I wonder why no one made it popular in Eurovision in the 50s or 60s.

Of course it is. :) And I personally think it would be great to see another A Cappella effort in the contest, if it's done the proper way.
Belgium was awesome in 2011 xheart
