I hope Israel keeps the oriental rhythms/sounds for next year (preferably more oriental and less Americanized this time around), I knew it would be Israel's ticket back to the finals and turned out I was right...

Just a suggestion of song styles (not necessarily these acts) that would make me put Israel in the top yet another year (and please bring back some of the awesome Hebrew xpray) xcheer

Eeeh, the same type of music from the same country each year... No please.

Well... some countries are pretty much sending the same thing every year now and I'd say in a contest that starts to sound more and more generic and "same"-ish, something like this will still be fresh compared to the rest... better to stay true than rely on Swedish imports every year.

Tomorrow on 11:00 CET the three Israeli contestant songs will be featured on an Israeli radio channel - "Reshet Gimel".
There are 4 finalists:
Two of them, Hovi Star and Nofar Salaman sing the same song in a different arrangement. The song is called "Made of Stars" and was created by Doron Medley who was responsible for "Golden Boy" last year.
Gil Hadash's song is called "Follow the sun" which is uptempo.
Ela Daniel's song is called "Somebody out there" which by the rumors is a ballad in an "Adele" style.

Nofar's song is by far the best. Ella's song seems to be a favourite among the fans, but actually it is kinda generic, she could sing much better songs... Gil's song is good too. Only Hovi is the weakest link here.

Although I like the second version of Made of stars. It's kinda more authentic.

Difficult choice:
I like the chorus of Follow the sun, but the way to the it is somewhat boring, if not annoying. But the chorus is REALLY good.
Made of Stars by Hovi has more power and the underlying beat is fantastic and full of suspense. Unfortunately, they build up a road to a climax that never happens. It seems as if the arrangement was made by different people in different parts... (somehow as in Agnetes song this year)
Made of Stars by by Nofar is more genuine and I just love the oriental touch that she puts into it. But it has got less tension....
The only one that didn't impress me was "Somewhere out there". After the first line of the chorus I could exactly preview the second and third part of it.... Maybe I heard this already in another song, maybe it's just a boring "all day sequence", I don't know. And the whole song is built around those four or five notes.

1. Ella (Reminds me of Dance Our Tears Away with John De Sohn and Kristin Amparo)
2. Nofar
3. Gil
4. Hovi

Yoni
1st March 2016, 16:57
Just gonna copy what I said from .net

Ella's song is so disappointing for her, doesn't match the style she showed throughout the show at all. it's quite good though the production is so 2011.

Gil's singing a weird mix of a Sia rip-off (alive) with Barbra's "Woman in love" suddenly coming in to the chorus.

Hovi started great only for his song to turn into a kitsch-mess, ew.

Nofar would bring us a Moran Mazor result at best from that studio, her accent shows a lot and it's much less than I expected from Doron (as he definitely wrote that song for a Mizrahi-style production like this).

No idea who to support, SO disappointed at Ella losing her unique touch with this song.

nunaney
1st March 2016, 17:33
I seem to be the only one who has Hovi as their favorite

My ranking is

4.Ella

But I'm fine as long it's not Ella's song.

That's it,. Nofar Selman!! xup

"Made of stars" by Nofar Selman brought the tear to my eye! xcry :(

Please dear Israel..

If she wins (and if live is strong) goes straight to my number 1!!

ParadiseES
1st March 2016, 23:49
Clearly, "Made of stars" is the strongest one. I like both versions. One is a little bit "Rise like a phoenix", more powerful; the other one is more like "Rak bishvilo", not as powerful but more authentic.

"Somebody out there" gives me "Same heart" vibes, but I think this song is worse. Not really impressed.

"Follow the sun" is the weakest one, quite messy.

IMO "Made of stars" is the obvious choice, but I'm afraid voters will divide between both version and in the end on of the two others will win. Who had the silly idea of having 3 songs for 4 acts? :?

A-lister
3rd March 2016, 21:23
Correct. Harel (Israel 2010) didn't like her cover.

I know they use a talent show method to pick the winner but this proves why it's a bad method because focus is not on songs, if someone is doing a cover good or bad is completely irrelevant since in ESC they will be judged on the original song and not just on vocal and performanc skills (unfortunately ESC also got the talent show disease to some extent but fortunately since talent shows in general aren't as popular anymore as they were some years ago this hopefully will start to die down in ESC aswell).

Sammy

aglm1988
3rd March 2016, 21:24
By the way I hate the format with the percentages. It gives "for" to the last performer.

Once we see the running order we would know who's the production favorites. My (and all the Israeli ESC fans) think it's Nofar...

Nofar was actually my favorite going into the show. Her voice had a lovely whine to it in the studio version. But that live version failed so much to communicate what made that version work. It sounded generic, but not in a comfortable way like Hovi's version. Hovi, on the other hand, took the song to another level live. It really felt like he was performing and communicating what made the song work - it was a fun performance to listen to and a fun one to watch.

THE GOOD:

-This song is very well executed. From the vocals to the instrumentals, everything just works here.
-It's a classic pop song, which I feel is a good thing as far as standing out from the pack.

THE BAD:

-It gets a bit dull towards the end.

THE VERDICT:

-I like this song's chances. It's got something unique, and it's a good song on top of that. Does it make it to the Final? That's really a matter of the audience liking it come May. 8 points

Interesting to see the reaction to the revamp - it feels like its genre has changed so much that all of its previous fans are annoyed, but everyone else likes it much more. It's completely reversed its following. Personally I think I preferred the darker, more dramatic original version, but it's close, and this is certainly better produced. Still, it's slowly growing on me, and might eventually catch up to my opinion of the old version.

Revamps in recent years seem to follow a pattern. We'll get a few each year, and they'll be split into:

Slight production value improvements that work but aren't highly discussed (Cyprus/Switzerland 2015, Georgia 2016)
Making minor backing/melody changes to mixed, but generally positive, feedback (Georgia 2015, Spain/France 2016)
Changing the entire feel of the song, thrilling some people and devastating others (Malta/Belarus 2015, Israel 2016)
Turning an interesting but niche song into bland pop and destroying what fanbase it had (Macedonia 2015, Albania 2016)

It feels like there always has to be one or two of each category, never more or less than that. I'll be interested to see if this holds up next year...
