Sandhja Kuivalainen (born 16 March 1991), known professionally as simply Sandhja, is a Finnish singer. She will represent Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with the song "Sing It Away". Sandhja was born to an Indo-Guyanese mother and a Finnish father.

In May 2015 she featured on Brandon Bauer's single "The Flavor". On 30 October 2015 she released the single "My Bass". Sandhja was announced as one of the 18 competing artists in Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2016 on 12 January 2016. She competed in the third semi-final and advanced to the final. In the final, she was declared the winner after winning the jury vote and placing third with the public. She will now represent Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016, performing in the first half of the first semi-final on 10 May 2016 at the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, Sweden.

With the risk of permaban, I really don't understand Opera Skaala :?. Actually I don't quite understand anything from UMK 2015. It was all very weird, apart from Crossroads that was just lame. When I saw the interview with PKN before they entered the stage I knew I wanted them to win. When there was nothing else worth sending, might as well send PKN just because no other country would ever do that.

Better luck (a.k.a. songs) next year.

The question is: will any good artists take UMK seriously any more after what happened this year (and send good songs)?

One thing i've noticed is that Finland keep seeming to fail when they send non-english songs - I hope this wont push the Finnish broadcaster into having more english songs in their NF and favouring them over non-english songs.

5. Cristal Snow
6. Eini
11. Pää-äijät

Been inactive on the forums for a couple weeks due to a family holiday, but I felt the need to come by and say:

HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE

Lame sweater, English lyrics about love, and a sweeping orchestral/folk backing track... that seems like a pretty promising sign of Mikael Saari to me. We Should Be Through might still be my favourite ever NF song depending on my mood (or even just my favourite song, period), so... I will hope!

When I listened through the Instagram bits (which are hard to judge, but still find them interesting in many parts) I noticed that it was many "normal" songs in this edition. I suppose the absolutely crazy final from last year scared YLE a bit, which contained EVERYTHING you can't think of in a ESC final. So I suppose that it will be a much more calm year this time, maybe also one that the right song wins (and not the fennoswede one just by default as in the past)

What's their name supposed to mean? Head fathers-in-law? And "Champagne heaven"?

Well, I guess it could be translated The Main Guys or something. It is ambiguous because pää means both head and main. Äijä usually means just a guy, sometimes a father in slang.

Anyway, I hope they don't do well...

Ooh, Mikael Saari's song is certainly... interesting. I know I like it, but I've got no idea yet of whether it's a mild like or an absolute love. Two listens so far, and I still can't quite wrap my head around it - there's no real chorus, no real repetition, and a lot of building, flowing parts to it. It's certainly unique, but I think I'll need another ten or twenty listens at least to figure out exactly what I think - I could end up seeing it as just another decent song or an absolute masterpiece.

Just listened through them all and will share my opinions later but two things:

1. Nothing compares to Opera Skaala. Not even close.

2. That Mikael Saari song is a major let down. After such an incredibly poignant and powerful piece of music he comes back with that strangely dull, overproduced and exaggerated song. So unfortunate. I was all ready to support him.

I was planning to reveal tonight my love for "Draamaa" I think it's quite easily my favourite song here. Hot 80's synth-laden verses and a super catchy chorus. I can't help but be the biggest sucker for the song.

I find UMK very disappointing this year in comparison to the previous Finnish selection that was incredibly fun. There are many songs here that I think can do well for Finland, but the ones I can see succeeding don't interest me. I'm kind of in love with how Finland are doing things these days though. Solid songs and fantastic music videos for each of them.

Schlagerman1

A pretty decent line-up this year! Noticeble that YLE wanted a more calm NF this year, but still a pretty high quality.

Here is my top 5:

5th is Pietarin Spektaakkeli! Cool and funny song with a great melody. Sticks to the head like glue. It has to qualify to the final at least! :D

4th is actually Rafaela Truda! Didn't think I would like it, but damn it is so Ariana Grande that it is HILARIOUS! And she seems quite charming as well. And watch out, she is a fennoswede after all, and we all know the fennoswedes got a lot of power when supporting one of their own in this NF...

3rd is Gušani Brothers! Catchy, fun, summerish song that just makes one wanna party. This one could make the Globen glow and jump if chosen to Eurovision. Also, if it works live, then I can see it do pretty okay in Eurovision, at least qualify to the final. :D

2nd is the lovely Mikael Saari! Same style as "We Should Be Through" but maybe slightly more complicated. But that ending will be marvelous live, getting goosebumps in the thought of it. Should actually win this NF pretty easily, and if he do, then Finland will be top 15. If Norway got 8th last year, why shouldn't this do almost as well?

And my number one is Cristal Snow. Wow, what a song, it really got into me. Stunning melody and the lyrics is beautifully fit to it. Really looking forward to see what it will be live, I got a feeling for something different, but still effective. Great to see Cristal back in the NF, and also with something completly different, but still amazing.

But yeah, Mikael Saari SHOULD win this NF...but you never know with Finland, they have surprised us in the past. Is Finland maybe ready for Cristal now after all? Or will the Fennoswedes vote Arian...I mean Rafaela Truda to Globen. Looking forward to this! :D

Hoping for Saari to win, but when I last saw the odds to win he was at something like 20/1. Would be nice to see him overcome the odds, but I'm not sure. Either way, it seems pretty difficult to pick out a winner one way or another at the moment... I'm curious to take another look at the odds in a week or so from now.

EINI: “Draamaa” - What can I say? I just couldn't resist this ones charms. Just so darn infectious. The verses are mysterious and crunchy then the chorus just explodes. The Finnish language sounds so good to my ears. All the pieces just connect here for me. As pop music gets colder, harsher and more up it's own backside, this song here is like a 'lil beacon of light. I know a lot of people aren't going to like it, and it probably doesn't stand a chance of winning, but i'm just so delighted to see it here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6V4X_anKn4

I adore the music video as well. What a storyline! Eini's car breaks down and she's left on the roadside, frustrated as cars drive past her. She braves the woods and twiggery. A bright blinding light leads Eini through the fog to a repair garage! She walks in to find an assortment of hunky men who have been working hard with their spanners. It's coy smiles all round for a while until Eini starts to slowly sway. Before long tops are off and the hottest garage party of all time is taking place. The video finishes with a spanner being hoisted into the air, perhaps a sign that Eini's car has now been repaired.

DAMMIT SEND DRAAMAA TO EUROVISION!xheat

Liking

STELLA CHRISTINE: “Ain’t Got Time For Boys” - Very chill and soulful. Reminds me of the music I was listening to a lot back in the mid 00's.
LIEMINEN: “Pehmeiden arvojen vaalijat” - Quite a wonderful piece of electronic pop. It's certainly groovy. Clearly quite Daft Punk inspired.
CLEMSO: “Thief” - I thought this would be something i'd instantly disregard. I haven't a good history with NF songs with a touch of African flavour but this is pretty cool though. There's a lot going on with the music. A very full and rich sound.
RAFAELA TRUDA: “Rise Up” - Another one I wasn't expecting to appreciate. Totally not my thing normally but I couldn't help but enjoy parts of it, especially that rap! I can see people going nuts for this, and I think i'll let them:lol:

Solid but not my thing

PÄÄ-ÄIJÄT: “Shamppanjataivas” - Like a "Pizza" part 2. Fun for sure but not my kind to be honest.
ANNICA MILÁN & KIMMO BLOM: “Good Enough” - This just about avoided my "Don't like" pile. It's ok and melodically goes to not where exactly i'm expecting it to go. It's alright. I wouldn't choose to listen to it though.
BARBE-Q-BARBIES: “Let Me Out” - Hammy rock. Nice guitar solo, other than that i'm not really feeling it.

Undecided

SAARA AALTO: “No Fear” - Gosh, this song confuses the heck out of me. So much I like and so much I don't. The strong Indian touch is wonderful but there are parts that spoil it. A bit too sparkly in parts.
PIETARIN SPEKTAAKKELI: “Liian kuuma” - This stands out but I can't say it's grabbed me at the moment.
CRISTAL SNOW: “Love Is Blind” - At first I was like "Uhhhh" but I have to admit by the end something caught me. Perhaps how forward and strong the vocals are here helped me. The song isn't anything special but it's an ear worm.
MIKKO HERRANEN: “Evil Tone” - Looking at the thumbnail for the video on youtube I was like in my head "Dude, please be good". On my very first listen I thought this was the most boring, cliche piece of soft rock I had ever heard. I gave it another go just now though and whilst it's still nothing extraordinary, my first thoughts were perhaps a tad harsh. This isn't as bad as I thought it was.
SANDHJA: “Sing It Away” - I could end up liking this one but will need more time with it. It's catchy, a little bit funky. Not super original but it does what it says on the tin.

Don't like

ATTENTION 2: “Ready For The Show” - xfaint No words for this one...
GUŠANI BROTHERS: “Poom Poom” - Not my kind of trash.
MIKAEL SAARI: “On It Goes” - I've already shared my opinion on this. Just such a disappointing song that leaves me cold. Overproduced and overblown, dare I say pretentious. It doesn't hold a candle to "We Should Be Through".
TUULI OKKONEN: “Don’t Wake Me Up” - Dull chorus that just floats in the middle of nowhere.
YLONA: “Blazing Fire” - Zzzzzzzzz sorry, i'm actually running out of words.

All in all it's a kind of disappointing selection compared to last years. I've got my hype song though so i'm happyxlove

I've had two quick listens... Sigh, not pleased.. Well, there's certainly no "Something Better" or "Sängyn Reunalla" magic of 2014, or "När Jag Blundar"... Those are the kind of quality songs I like Finland for. But here is not a single song I'm completely excited about that stirs some kind of feeling in me, to be honest. Oh well. It's either bland rock or pop I don't enjoy. Can't even pick a single example I like the most. The elements are there, these songs try so hard to be something (in a good way, I guess :?) but not the complete package, none of these songs is really all there for me. In theory I like "Liian Kuuma" a lot, but it has the forementioned problem. Saara Alto and Ylona are great in some parts, but over-all it's still... nope. Just not anything for me, no matter how hard I try to like these. xshrug

OK, so gone through all 18 songs once and here are my thoughts:

Overall a pretty good National Final lineup! Only dislike a few songs and have a good few I want to see at ESC this year!

LOVE

Draamaa: Simply amazing song. Agree with all the above love for this and hope it wins.
Love Is Blind: Oh my! Really sweet song and I could see it being performed amazingly well! I like songs with stories and this one tells it well.
Good Enough: More than "Good Enough" for me (hahahaha...) as the duet works well. Not my favourite, but still pretty darn good.
Don't Wake Me Up: This is my dark horse for my personal favourite. Felt vibes during this similar to those I felt in MF last year for a song which is still my favourite ever from a Eurovision NF. Not at that level yet, but could be. Watch this space...
Let Me Out: I was so unsure about this at first, but it really grew on me. Something a little different and I could see it doing well.

LIKE

Blazing Fire: Almost a love, but not quite there. Just not quite feeling it enough.
No Fear
Ready for the Show
On it Goes: xheat Nice singer! ;)
Sing it Away: There's something in her voice which I find offputting. Then again, I said that at first about Václav's voice last year, so who knows!
Poom Poom: Another one I like but not sure I should. :)

OK
Pehmeiden arvojen vaalijat
Evil Tone
Time For Boys
Thief

I just find all of these uninspiring but not painful to listen to.

NO
Shamppanjataivas
Rise Up
Liian kuuma

These are the ones I really don't enjoy and couldn't get all the way through the song without losing interest. Just not my kind of music!

Should they, though? ESC is an established enough brand in Finland that it's going to stay afloat no matter how many NQs they get, so why not send what they want to send on their own terms. They don't need to send what Sweden want to send; that's why we have Sweden. I do agree with you that there's no way "Draamaa" will even make it out of the semis, let alone win, but that's not Finland's goal.

Agree so much with this! Finland have a special quality at Eurovision. They are far from my favourite country but they do seem to stand out (for better or for worse!) with what they send. Sometimes it really pays off (Lordi of course), but others it fails miserably (2015...). I hope that they continue to send the more unusual entries and I think Draaamaaaa would be a great addition to that history.

I don't get this approach. To me it sounds rather like people in this forum will take a pleasure from the fact that Finland will not qualify. Why not suggest the same approach to other countries? Why people wish that country X will do well in ESC?
I wish Finland to do best in ESC.

Which was in my top ten for that year...

Why do want Finland to be bashed? Wasn't enough of that last year?

I have no idea where you have got that from. I want Finland to send the slight more "out there" entries regardless of what people think. Sometimes this will prove very successful, other times it will not. What I am saying is that I don't want the failures to make them seek a more "safe" strategy. I have no wish for any country to get "bashed" at Eurovision and I don't like the insinuation that I do, especially based on such little evidence.

I'm sorry; I thought you implied that using potential results and strategy (the Sweden approach) should influence Finland's approach. And I want Finland to do well too, but I care a lot less about that than about sending a song they care about passionately, and I think Finland feels the same way.

I understand that you want to see "out there" approach but then I assume that it should be your wish for all participating countries. My arguement is that specific country should never take "out there" approach to that extend that it will undermine its chances in the contest. The need to be balance between being "out there" and competitiveness.

The need to be balance between being "out there" and competitiveness.
Eini's entry is neither nor. Her song is just a old-fashioned schalger - nothing more.

It is my wish for Finland because they are one of the few countries that seem to do that a lot. The contest works so well because it has variety and because different countries treat it differently. If they were to all send "out there" songs, I think that ESC would lose some of its appeal, just as it would lose its appeal if we had songs like "Heroes" from every country. So I suppose that I want some participating countries to do so, not necessarily Finland, but definitely not all of them. If Finland changed tack, it would shift the balance we currently have and that would frankly worry me. As for winning, well seeing as they've won in the last decade, then surely I can wait 30 or so years before worrying that they haven't won in a while? I would be far more worried about such things if this were Malta or Portugal or France, as it HAS been a while since they won!

Eini's entry, for me, fits in well with what I want to see from Finland. I appreciate that may not be an opinion shared by all, but I remain firm in my conviction that it is so. There is little point in discussing it as we are both correct; you see it as old-fashioned schlager; I see it otherwise.

Well agree with your opinion that there should be variety but we don't need to have same countries to have the same approach. I belive that specifc country does not need select the same type of entries every time. It creates labels.

I can't see the UMK audience ever going for a song like Annica and Kimmo's. And if Mikael didn't manage it last time, I doubt he will this time.

Predicting the UMK winner prior to the live shows is impossible as I'm all too used to seeing trainwrecks springing up, but if I had to guess now, I'd say Annica and Kimmo. The song offends few people and sticks in your head, not to mention the singers are good. I don't rate Saara Aalto's song at all (repeating "no fear" a hundred times over a generic and badly produced beat does not a winner make), and even though she'll probably do well, it can very well fall short. Mikael Saari seems more suitable for ESC than UMK in terms of success, but he can get the voters on his side. He just needs to do that.

A problem with Annica&Kimmo is that Cristal Snow fills roughly the same niche, so the votes may be split (or Cristal Snow does better). Outsiders may include Pää-äijät and Rafaela Truda, the latter of which received massive free publicity when the tabloids wondered if her song plagiarised Ariana Grande. I don't think country bumpkin disco has much of a chance in UMK, though, and Rafaela Truda is in the wrong semi. She'll struggle to make the final with a favourite having to fail in order for that to happen.

Sure, I understand that many finns might dislike him a lot, but don't you think that he is quite popular among the lgbt-finns? Also this more "masculine" version of him with a real love-song might surprise many straight people (if he goes with that live too).

To be honest, I have actually no idea how this NF will go. My mind says Mikael Saari, my heart hopes for Cristal but my feeling in my stomach says it will be a horrible surprise of some sort... Well it will be exciting to follow the NF for sure.

And about the craze for Elni, yes I do like the song, she is among my faves in the first semi (which is absolutely the worst semi in my opinion). I hope she goes to the final if it works live, but there it is enough for me. ;)

OK, I read this as "LGBT-fans" at first and went "YES, that's so true!" Hope he wins. Lovely song and I could see it being staged in such an epic way. However, it could also be staged terribly and my love of the song would suddenly go I fear!

haha yeah I feel exactly the same. :D It is Cristal Snow after all, so something special on stage is meant to be! But the question is what.
I hope for some kind of David Bowie-feeling to it perhaps, because I can both see and hear slight Bowie-inspiration to this song.

Well both sorta, but mostly theme-wise yes. I can for sure hear a little HURTS there too, but I think since Cristal is a bit older (read somewhere he was 40) I suppose that Bowie could be one of his inspirations as an artist (together with many other artists and groups I am sure of). Also I think HURTS, and many others british groups is in one way or another inspired by David Bowie to begin with.

I have mixed opinions about Cristal Snow's entry. I really appreciate the effort of entering with a love song that identifies the recipient as being the same gender as the singer. I've said before that I find it disturbing how ESC is generalized as a gay thing and yet openly LGBT+ performers are few and far between, and explicitly gay songs are even rarer (you may get one in a selection every few years, but I don't think one has even made it to ESC before?) However, I think Cristal Snow's lyrics are rather immature, heavy-handed and maybe even outdated. If it were a serious portrayal of the internalized guilt and alienation one feels when persecuted for being gay, I would admire that, and if it were a happy pride anthem, I would admire that. But those themes are mixed in an uncomfortable way and he comes off as sounding like he thinks he is being a lot more taboo and edgy than he is (please correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think religious guilt was a big part of society in Finland )

That's solely because a popular tabloid ran an article about Rise Up possibly plagiarizing Ariana Grande. Of course, all publicity is good publicity, but staring at the number of views is pointless.

I can understand that Cristals lyrics are on the borderline to become naive, but for me it works totally. I think that guilt for being homosexual is something that always excisted, even today whether it is religious or other reasons for it. I think the heaven or hell and the jesus similarity for example is a smart way to show both how it was when Cristal was young (and before it), but also has a showing of how gay guilt looks like today. If we look just in Finlands case, it is indeed one of the best countries in the world when it comes to gay rights, but even if it is so, it is never easy. This is Finland from a swedish viewpoint, so finns can correct me if I am wrong, but Finland is a complex country with a mixture of Finnish, Swedish (mostly in bigger cities and swedish border) and Russian (mostly around the russian border) culture. Finland is very similar to Sweden when it comes to gay rights (in some parts even better than us) but I think that the finnish society can differ alot from ours. In Finland it might be for example so that men has to be in a certain way, more manly sorta say, something that has been more lost here in Sweden.
Also prejudice and even hatred of gays exists and will never be fully gone I suppose (Sweden for example also has it, not on the surface, but in the mists there are always people that has problem with certain kinds of people). I am not religious (I would say I am sort of christian, but also atheist at the same time, can explain that more an another time perhaps) and I have felt a lot of guilt for my homosexuality, especially when I was young.

In my teenage years I never come to terms with it, and became so confused that I just decided to not even try to find out what I liked. Nothing happened until I was 21 (I am 25 today) and shortly after my father had died, then I finally understood that I might like guys...and actually felt okay with doing it. But I do still have some fears, despite living in Scandinavia. I rarely holds my boyfriends hand in public, not even kiss him on the cheek and when hugging there are shorter hugs. Even if I have the law on my side, I still feel like I have to think twice before showing my love for him in public. I don't know if that is guilt or not, but I think that many gays are still feeling it, maybe not in the same amount as in pre 2000, but a little I think. But it is a really interesting thing to discuss, the guilt of homosexuals in Europe, which I think is stronger than we think and maybe this song can help out some of the young kids out there that has a strong feeling to someone of the same gender, to feel proud about it. :)

I really like Cristal Snow since Killing Me, i was expecting a dark song from him but Love is Blind is such a warm love song. It all comes down to the staging to me. 8\10
On It Goes is a beautiful ballad but the lyrics are kind of... cliche :? 8\10
Good Enough looks perfect to me. 9\10
No Fear could be an anthem for European girls wearing bindis, thinking of going to Goa and talking about how different they are. But not for me. 6\10.
Draamaa is a good schlager with modern elements, i like it. 7\10
Don't Wake Me Up is a good powerballad but nothing less. 6\10
Poom Poom is classic Eastern European summer hit sh*t. No. 1\10
Let Me Out would be great in Eurovision but i don't think they would win when there already are two powerful songs (Good Enough and On It Goes). However i always loved me some girl power. 8\10
Blazing Fire is so early 2000s and Ylona is such a beautiful woman! Love it. 8\10
Sing It Away begins very powerful but the chorus is just meh. 6\10.
Liian Kuuma is a different attempt, however it sounds very similar to me. There can be a lawsuit against this song  5\10
Pehmeiden arvojen vaalijat is a great synth song. I might be the only person liking this but i don't give a darn. 9\10
Ain’t Got Time For Boys...ugh why there is so much country music in Eurovision? 5\10
Evil Tone is so 80s and not in a nice way. 1\10
I have only thing to say for Let Me Go...EUROPEAN MEGHAN TRAINORS! 1\10
Prob...I mean Rise Up, how this is allowed? 1\10
Thief is a mediocre but nice song, loved his accent  5\10
Shamppanjataivas would make people smile a bit, but that's all. 4\10
Overall, my top 5 would be: Good Enough
On It Goes
Love Is Blind
Let Me Out
Pehmeiden arvojen vaalijat

Does anybody know how Siru's odds looked at this time last year?

Can't find a full & exact list of odds, but looking through the comments section from ESCTips on their UMK prediction article from last year, she was ranging from 17 to 25 depending on the site and the date. Apparently the favourites at roughly this point (ie. before any live performances) were PKN @ 1.75, Solju @ 3.5 and Satin Circus @ 7.

Even if we assume that the favourite will win again, though, that doesn't necessarily mean that Saari's the one to beat (unfortunately). For whatever reason, the odds linked above are quite different from most other sites: the screenshot below seems to more accurately reflect the majority of betting agencies.

http://puu.sh/mzYBE/c7769ad5c9.png

It's hard to see a clear, super-favourite based on that... when 7-8 songs have odds below 10/1, it's got to be a pretty close year. I'm still hoping for Saari, but I could easily imagine quite a few other acts winning (Barbe-Q-Barbies, Pää-Äijät, Annica & Kimmo, Saara Aalto and Rafaela Truda, in particular).

sharkan
18th January 2016, 12:35
Siru's odds are irrelevant as she was only fan favouirite.

Regarding 2016, Pää-Äijät are that high for one reasons - PKN. I don't think people will go for it this time. They are not fornt runners on youtube or Spotify. Same with the poll at Iltalehti. There Saara Aalto is the number 1.
Therefore I would consider her as favourite to win. I am also surprised to see Barbe-Q-Barbies doing that well in Betfair (I am glad because I like their song). Cristal Snow will destroy his song with live performance.

In 2013 Mikael Saari started gaining support just after the semi-final. Still He is not known in Finland so his odds are not surprising for me (Betfair, Unibet).

Hoping you're right here; I don't dislike their song, but there's better stuff in UMK this year and I'd like to see Finland finally choose one of the songs I want them to send. They've got a great NF most years but somehow they always end up going with the polar opposites of my tastes.

One thing worth noting, though - I think I remember seeing that Pää-Äijät were in the Finnish charts at the moment (something like #36) with their UMK song, while no other entries were in the top 100. It's entirely likely that they could flop live, or that the support they've got going on the charts just won't transfer to UMK, but I wouldn't entirely write them off yet.

I only really started following NFs in late 2013; in fact, I've got Saari to thank for that, since seeing the injustice of him losing out made me wonder what other great songs didn't make it past their NF. I'll take your word on it that he gained after the semis, then; hopefully that happens again! So far his song's the only one from any NF that I think deserves to win Eurovision this year, it's one of the few I'd give a 12-point rating to, and I've listened to it twice as much as any other 2016 NF song... I'd love to see him end up at Eurovision to make up for three years ago. I'll try not to get my hopes up, though - Finland's probably got the worst track record of any Eurovision country when it comes to choosing songs I like in their NF.

When I was looking I saw three other entries on itunes

#36 Eini
#78 Mikael Saari
#83 Annica Milan & Kimmo Blom

But you know that it is irrelevant unless you are in top 10 because #36 means 11 purchases and the whole top 100/200 changes after each 24 hours.

I don't think Mikael Saari is capable to win ESC but he may be in top 10-15.
I have the same problem despite Finland being my favourite country. I happened only once that they select my favourite - 2007. In 2006 and 2014 they selected my #2. 2013 was my #3. 2008 and 2010 were in my top5.
Therefore I am mentally preparing for Saara Aalto :P But I hope Mikael Saari will slay after all/

I just listened to all the songs again, and I can safely say, WHAT THE HELL, FINLAND?
UMK this year is amazing. I dare say it's even better than Eesti Laul, and I adore Eesti Laul. Out of the 18 songs, I only dislike 3 of them. Additionally, I really wouldn't be fussed if any of the songs in my top 12 won. Good luck Finland, you better make the right choice this time.

Finnish friends, please vote for Annica & Kimmo (their song is my number one), ClemSO or Ylona (because I love their songs too, but I'm afraid they won't get much love from the public). You have to vote for them. It's the law.

I suppose there are more in it that I or the comments hasn't seen yet. Take a look at the video now! I absolutely adore artists that is 100% into what to achieve when it comes to being an performer or artist, and also who gives us signs of inspiration and making us as viewers think once or twice, making us gasp with amazement or horror (as it is when it comes to the reconstruction of the last picture, first you think "WTF" but then you must think that it is a way to make us remind it, and the crazy idea and the bold move is making me laugh). Good job, and looking forward seeing what she can do live!

I don't know if anyone else noticed it, but I saw comments to Rafaela Trudas song that the video contains several reactments of old paintings and photos!

Huh, that's actually a pretty cool idea for a music video. The song itself is probably my biggest guilty pleasure of the NF too. Will be interested to see how she stages it live.

Okay, so boredom just drove me to make some in-depth predictions for the national finals based on YouTube data. I went through all 18 songs uploaded on the official UMK channel, looking at the the view count, likes and dislikes, and comment count as my raw data, then did some basic calculations and threw the numbers together to rate a song's chances of success based on five different areas. Those are:

Views: Quite simply, how many people have looked up the song as a result of pre-contest hype?
Likes: How many people have shown that they like the song, and how many supporters will it have going into the contest?
Approval: Out of everybody who rated the song, what percentage liked it?
Activity: What proportion of viewers enjoyed the song enough to take action and give it a like?
Comments: How much discussion, good or bad, is surrounding the entry in the pre-live show period?

All five of these, I think, look at separate and important areas for predicting a song's popularity, and so I gave points from 1-18 to all songs in each area, then added these points to determine an overall prediction list, which is as follows:

https://i.imgur.com/twN4aCE.png

Before I try to draw any other conclusions from it, I'll note that there are some obvious errors in trying to predict things this way. In particular, this pre-contest YouTube audience may be quite different from the audience of Finnish televoters who will determine the result: it likely includes a lot of international views, a lot of ESC fans, and tends towards a younger demographic. The prediction chart doesn't take into account any overlap between genres, or what may result from that; perhaps the more prominent genres here, ie. dance songs and power ballads, may split the votes within their genres, leaving fans of alternative music to focus their votes on a smaller number of songs. Finally, it's impossible, of course, to take the staging potential or live performances of the entries into account until they're performed, which may make a large difference.

However, we're still left with a large data set on a range of areas for all of the songs, and I thought it'd be interesting to whip up this chart to see more concrete figures to make predictions with, rather than trying to base things on a few comments here and there. I don't think the results are particularly surprising; the top four contenders score-wise seem to be those most widely-discussed online, while the lower-ranked entries are generally dismissed in predictions (with the exception of Lieminen's entry, which has inexplicably short odds on some betting sites). Saara and Cristal seem to have the most attention on them from a wider audience at the moment, though the Approval and Activity columns show that Saari, plus Annica & Kimmo, are the best at gaining fans from those who do actually see them, which is arguably the more important quality in a national final setting, where all acts are viewed equally. Additionally, Saari's large comment count suggests that either those who view the song react in some significant way, or that he has an ardent group of fans, either of which should help him to earn votes.

Setting aside the top four, I think the stats show three clear dark horses also in the running. Pää-Äijät have got a lot of views and likes relative to their overall position, indicating a controversial love-or-hate entry, which seemed to help the 2013 and 2015 UMK winners. On the other hand, Barbe-Q-Barbies haven't received significant attention in terms of direct views, but are generally met with a high approval rating, and should stand out given the lack of other rock songs in the national final. Finally, Rafaela Truda's video statistics are difficult to analyse, as most of her views and dislikes seem to have resulted from a plagiarism controversy of some kind. While the topic may be negative, it's still given her a lot of exposure, popularised her song, and gotten people talking, which - with a catchy earworm of a song like hers - may conversely help her.

Given all of the above, I'll make the following prediction for Top 7:

Mikael Saari: “On It Goes”
Saara Aalto: “No Fear”
Annica Milán & Kimmo Blom: “Good Enough”
Barbe-Q-Babies: “Let Me Out”
Cristal Snow: “Love Is Blind”
Rafaela Truda: “Rise Up”
Pää-Äijät: “Shamppanjataivas”

I've never been great at predicting NFs, and I'm probably way off this time as well; I feel like my bias towards Saari may have made this chart a little too optimistic for me. Still, I enjoyed working on that for the last couple hours, and I'm curious to see if anybody agrees or disagrees. Any thoughts?

Listened a bit more to this nf and it seems to be not as weak as I thought before. My list of favourites has expanded to the following 5 in random order: Mikael Saari, Barbe-Q-Babies, Cristal Snow, Pää-Äijät, Attention 2. Seems like all of those other than attention 2 are ought to do rather well :)

My own list of favourites is probably something like:
1. Mikael Saari - On It Goes
2. Saara Aalto - No Fear
3. Rafaela Truda - Rise Up
4. Clemso - Thief
5. Annica & Kimmo - Good Enough

I think most of them should at least end with a decent position (ie. in the top half of the selection), probably with the exception of Clemso, whose song I seem to like more than other people do. One way or another, though, I'm actually quite impressed by Finland's NF this year; this might be the highest ratio of songs I've liked in any national final over the last few years, with the possible exception of a Melfest year or two. I'm usually pretty harsh with NFs, only liking 10-20% of songs enough to put them on my playlists, but here I quite enjoy 10 out of the 18, and there's nothing I really hate. This is where I'm tempted to say something like 'hopefully I'll want to support Finland at Eurovision this year', but considering that it's felt like the entire population of Finland is determined to spite me and ignore all my favourite songs in recent years, I... should probably refrain from being so optimistic for now.

Might just be you? At the very least, I haven't noticed any particular issues as of late.

As for Pää-Äijät - they're not the act I want to see Finland choose, but they're stil far, far ahead of PKN in my opinion. Yeah, their song's cheesy and nothing amazing, but it's fun, catchy and has a melody of some kind. PKN were pretty much dead last in my list for last year; Pää-Äijät would be, in an average year, maybe 15th or 20th? Still, I'd prefer to see you guys choose Mikael, who may well be my #1, or a couple others who'd likely be in my top 10-15. Seriously though, us Aussies can vote now! Send Mikael, and if nothing else, I'll reward you guys with votes!

Thanks for the feedback :D Fun to hear how my favorites are ranked amongst others. We seem to enjoy many of the same songs, so thats fun :)

I was actually not a big fan of ¨Blazing Fire¨ when i first heard it, but now I am hooked on it. :D So it got a lot higher on the list, than I thought it would last week. Thats one of the reasons why I wanted to wait with making a list, because I wanted to make sure these where my 10 favorites. There was never a question if Paa-Aijat would be my first place, but I understand why many do not like it or think it should win.

Only thing is, you need to make an account first, and apparently can't do so during the live shows. Link is here if anybody's interested to sign up in preparation and try to push Finland towards a less-bad choice for once. My impressions after the pre-show

Cristal Snow is terrible live! I am not worry that he will at all.

I am quite surprised to see Mikael Saari in people's voting that high actually. How about Saara Aalto? I am suprised that in public voting is not even in top 5 (it is a popularity measure after all).

However I am happy that this year in the pre-show my favourites where high either in the panel or public voting (Saari, BQB and Sandhja)

I thought they were voting based on the music videos yesterday, in which case I agree, it is a fantastic music video in terms of aesthetics and atmosphere. But the music videos aren't going to matter once the live shows start and things will undoubtedly change.

I don't think Annica and Kimmo are going to be convincing live, and I'm surprised the music video was even that popular. Actually, Annica seems fine. Kimmo is completely uncharismatic and creepy, which may have been funny when he was Angelo de Nile, but playing a romantic lead... I'll believe it when I see it.
