Current limit is three submissions per songwriter and three submissions per performer, which should be lowered to two for both (or even one). Poor pre-selection jurors have to spend hours listening to complete horseshit because most of the entrants have no self-critisism and send as much crap as they can, hoping something will get through.

I agree, my biggest fear is that we are going back to the averageness of 2014 and 2013.

Kairit
27th May 2015, 02:18
I don't think we'll have anything that matches GTY anytime soon either. I hope we'll just go with our hearts and choose something different but good, at least. Just a sincerely great goddamn song. Not something pretty, but averagely boring like 2013 or something that "should" work well in Eurovision like 2014. Those were pretty much failures. In 2014 Estonians really liked SHCBB, we should've just gone with that. In 2013 there were lots more interesting ones as well. But oh well, should've-would've-could've. I do kinda have higher hopes now, though. That we'll be able to make a good decision and that there'll be a strong selection without any Eurovision-y fakeness, or just please dear god that the public won't fall for that Eurovision-y fakeness.
(And I really hope there's not gonna be any fanwanking of a Sven Lõhmus entry again also, gosh.. Tasted serenity and escaped from it for one year at least. Rändajad is the only good thing he's done :? Because Rändajad just had it's own magic.. I hope he won't be back xpray.. Unless it's something actually great, but I doubt it. His songs are just such a hit or miss. I don't know why people like them. Usually his songs have some very good parts, but then it all gets flushed down the toilet, usually with the refrain. Some stuff he does for Laura is mostly good, but.. Lately they sound just all the same and uninspired).

Earthland
27th May 2015, 12:05
Yes, I hope no Lõhmus too ... I mean, I first thought that Rockefeller street is quite good, but now I think it was really only a little better than Suntribe's "Let's get loud" ... like "Let's get loud" in disguise, lol.

Actually I have a little bit hope for 2016: now that Stig brought such a classy entry to eesti laul, maybe more professional estonian artists are willing to bring good material to the contest also?

I think the best Lõhmus songs either don't get to go to the ESC (Päästke noored hinged, Moonwalk) or were never written for it in the first place (DNA, some of his pre-2000 work). Rändajad is sort of an exception.

Burned By The Sun is written by Fred Krieger btw, not Stig Rästa, if I'm not mistaken. He writes a lot of stuff. But as far as I know, mostly her album should be the creation of Fred Krieger & Stig Rästa, Elina Born and Vallo Kikas + maybe some other producers. Although I guess yeah, Stig mostly holds the reins and does the backing vocals and stuff.

I do like her album (even if it's not something I would constantly listen, rather like a one-listen type of thing tbh.. not that much substance) .. I've always liked the pop music Stig etc does though, it's amazing quality. I was a huuuge fan of Enough in Eesti Laul in 2013 and voted for it and thought that oh yes, that is a freaking world-class pop song. Not that many people got behind it though, which I was disappointed about, although I guess the fact that the performance lacked was the main thing. Might still be my favourite single (besides GTY of course), Miss Calculation's refrain is a bit too annoying for my taste, whilst Enough's refrain really makes the whole song and it's amazing. But it really is a matter of taste I suppose.. I do know a lot of people would probably love the album. :D

Don't like their cover at all. I find it rather lazy and unimaginative. The least they could have done was translate the lyrics, especially since they don't speak the language.

No-Big Silence cover on the other hand is something I can appreciate.

Since I don't speak neither Võro, nor Estonian (though I found a translation of the song somewhere on the Internet), I can only hear how the voices and the music sound - and this is what I love about Elina's and Stig's version. ;)
This one version posted above is not my taste, but of course tastes differ.

Quite disagree here. No Big Silence is a good band, but this cover does really not work for me and the translation really really does not work as the song relies heavily on not being in standard estonian. The Elina/Stig cover is a lazy one, but so is the original and it works in both cases.

Nah, that was just my snarky comment. He (Rasmus Rändvee) won the Idol over Elina, released an album nobody seemingly cared about and disappeared for years. But now he seems to be back and I quite like the new single Nitrolove I linked earlier. Looking forward to his new material and would not mind seeing him (again) in Eesti Laul 2016.

Yeah... I do feel sad nobody really cared about their music. I like their album a lot actually. Nice alternative rock. "Everlasting" is a reaalllyreally good song and should be more popular. :D People also seem to criticize him too much for not really being in the orbit. But you know, he is a band guy, not really a solo artist.. Just doing his thing with Facelift Deer. It's fine. He didn't really need to be all the time anyways, he was only 16 or 17 or idk when he won, I suppose busy with school and so on. But yeah, he does seem to be back now, which is cool. :) Nitrolove is a great song as well.

It's very nice, it only does not compare to "Für Elise". I actually just noticed that Stig is a member of Traffic .

This was the first year I actually followed some national selections, but i heard from traffic in 2014 by coincidence and was shocked to find out that this great song lost to "Amazing". I was listening to "Für Elise" again a few days ago and saw Stig performing. Not really suprised that he wrote both songs though, since I love both of them.

::ee Can always just send something of Stig again, either solo, duo or as part of Traffic. It should be a guarenteed place in the final in 2016 ;)

eerik
20th July 2015, 15:19
Yeah, "Für Elise" ended up being one of the biggest songs in Estonia that year. Miles ahead of "Amazing", which was quickly forgotten. Same for "Päästke noored hinged" a year earlier. Televoters really fucked it up in those years. I really feel that in 2013 and 2014 people were basing their votes on who wanted to go to Eurovision the most and not on the songs at all. It was a big fear of mine this year to see someone like Elisa Kolk claiming Eurovision was a dream for her and that her song had been written specially for that occasion. Luckily, we had "Goodbye to Yesterday" and televoters did not mess it up for the third year in a row.

Kairit
20th July 2015, 16:29
I do also wish Traffic had gone to Eurovision that year, since yeah, it actually turned out to be a big hit here... I really hope the ability of the Estonian public to make good decisions continues from this year into the next one and people genuinely go for just good f-ing songs that they enjoy. And maybe Stig will be back with Traffic one day. :D However, Für Elise is one of my least favourite Traffic songs, personally. I don't really get the huge phenomenon of that song and I still haven't gotten myself to really enjoy it. But I guess I love the songs they did before they transitioned into the whole Mumford & Sons-like folk style more, although "Maailmaparandaja" is veryvery great and I even love "Sekundiga" a lot more than Für Elise. Some of their songs are also outright bland from earlier times, but "Elekter" and "NASA" are pure awesome in my opinion, and I suppose more my taste as well. I listen to those songs a lot.

But I'm glad that Estonia and pretty much the whole of Europe has realised that we have Stig Rästa and that he's amazing. That's what I've been hoping for a long time, for years, really. Everyone knows him now. xyes

EESTI LAUL 2016 HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED!

Submissions deadline has been brought forward by a whole month and there's an empty week between SF2 and the grand final. No other big changes.

Submissions deadline: 2nd November 2015 15:00 (14:00 CET)
Semi-finalists announced by 5th November 2015 (Usually it's done a day earlier though)
Semi-final 1: 13th February 2016
Semi-final 2: 20th February 2016
Grand final: 5th March 2016

SpZ

Well that is disappointing.

eerik
25th October 2015, 23:15
Hey there! I didn't have access to my account for about two weeks so I couldn't post the news earlier, but here they are. ERR has announced two things:

Firstly, they had received five entries as of 8th October and said that's a normal amount four weeks before the deadline.
My thoughts: It indeed is normal. There is absolutely no reason to submit your entry before the last few days. No reason to worry SpZ. Four weeks is enough time to write and produce a three-minute pop song (or a good enough demo), re-write/re-record/re-produce it, realise that you are miserable and have achieved nothing in your life, delete everything, drink for a straight week, cure the hangover, and start writing a new song from the beginning. And everybody know that when you go and submit your entries on the last day, there will be a lot of cameras and you'll get your face to the news sites, etc. All the attention whores will do it on the last day.

Second thing they announced is that the jury will listen to the songs on two days. This is the first time, in all the previous years they've managed to do the pre-selection in a day.
My thoughts: This seems like just a pre-emptive change, given how the number of submissions has grown in the recent years. They really couldn't do it in a day if there's as many submissions as there were last year.

Oh, and they also confirmed the semi-finalists will be announced on 4th November around 18:30 CET, as expected.

So here's the schedule again:
Submissions deadline: 2nd November 2015 15:00 (14:00 CET)
First pre-selection day: 4th November 2015
Second pre-selection day: 5th November 2015
Semi-finalists announced by 5th November 2015 ~19:30 (18:30 CET)
Semi-final 1: 13th February 2016
Semi-final 2: 20th February 2016
Grand final: 5th March 2016

SpZ
26th October 2015, 01:25

That was exactly my thought but they say "As of now 219 submissions have been sent already" comparing it to the previous year. But I hardly believe... I mean achieving the new record 10 days till the deadline closure. Wtf.
On the other hand if you take the last year's progression 188 -> 219 then why not)) aprox. 250?

Do you watch their show "Sing my Song" (Laula mu Laulu) ? Its fantastic, they are all on Youtube.2014 season was wonderful.Ines,Birgit,Ott Lepland,Lea Dali Lion,Jaagup Kreem,Tõnis Mägi,Jarek Kasar,.What a lineup. Here is one of the duets

Yes, I mean, you can do it in countries such as Estonia or the Netherlands where you can still manage to set up a competitive-but-not-over-the-top atmosphere... I can't imagine such thing in Italy, France or the Uk... we had a program called "Music Farm" some years ago but first: it was a reality show, so one singer actually left the "house" at the end of each show, and second there were artists famous in the past trying to boost their careers so it was very little about music (which seems very central in Laula mu Laulu) and much about the show

Agree very much.Laula mu Laulu seems all about the music and with such talent some of the covers they do are amazing.Ines Torm just blows everything away and they all ended up crying.I think Kreem said nobody could do Torm, then told Ines no you cant, until he heard her perform it then was amazed. The cosy atmosphere also makes it so much better as does the fact they have live musicians. Its a great show and really shows off Estonian talent, and i find it very helpful in figuring out who might win an Eesti Laul at some point.

In fact, we had something similar in France called "Stars au grand air". The first edition featured Amel Bent, Patrick Bruel, Alain Chamfort & Bénabar. The second and last one, Christophe Willem, Alizée, Tina Arena, Michel Fugain & Patrick Fiori. TF1 developped its on format, with 4 (or 5) big music stars meeting in a cottage. Yet, as it looked like another program on France 2 (La Parenthèse inattendue, with 3 stars in very different fields meeting for the 1st time in a cottage for a week-end, without telephones and cut off of the world), it attracted criticism and the program was given up.

Yet, it's a great idea and I hope we'd have something like that in France. Well, it didn't inspire audience a lot either. Just like "Your face sound familiar" was an industrial flop here, while it worked everywhere...

There's no live stream, but photos and videos are sure to follow shortly after the deadline has dropped. As I've mentioned earlier, all the bigger entertainment media outlets will be there.

Here's a rough schedule of things to come:
15:00 - deadline

around 19:00 - number of submitted entries is announced

All local times, CET+1.

Well, there should be a correlation between the total number of submissions and the quality of the 20 semi-finalists, but there really isn't. If anything, then the overall quality of the final 20 has actually decreased in the last few years when we have seen a big growth in the number of submissions.

Guys! Prediction time! Which acts will be announced tonight?

My guess: Avoid Dave as one of the jury favorites (like Kali Briis in 2015), Birgita Murutar (with a song by the Supernova guys), Cartoon (so two chances for Kristel Aasleid), Jüri Pootsmann (maybe with a song by Stig Rästa), Gertu Pabbo (with a song by Ott Lepland), Grete or Laura (with a song by Sven Lõhmus), Kõrsikud or Bonzo solo, Kristjan Kannukene (maybe with a song by Rein Rannap), Luisa Värk, Popidiot, Blacky and Robin Juhkental & Horror Dance Squad.

Jüri Pootsmann is the only one I dare to guess out of the new bigger stars that could have something better (yet still probably mediocre). He also has a new song coming out on Friday and an EP soon, so it seems logical that they entered something. It's likely that we'll see him.

I sincerely hope it'll be another year without Sven Lõhmus with his popstar girls and overhyped songs. xpuke

Anne Veski seemed very positive (she was in the jury last year too). Couldn't reveal her favourite but said almost everybody voted for it.

Valner Valme (he's been in every Eesti Laul pre-selection jury) said there was a lot of mediocre entries but the competition was high among the sixty that made to the second day. Also said he's happy the overall production level of the songs was a lot higher this year.

In the first round the jury did not know the performers and songwriters.

67 songs remained for day two.

Mart Normet was very positive. Said about 50 songs deserved to qualify. Thinks about having more than two semi finals next year.

Here's how Normet introduced some of the songs:

"Hispaania tüdruk" (Spanish Girl) - both the songwriter and performer live on Tenerife at the moment, so that's where the inspiration came. Supposedly very catchy.

"Kaugel sinust" - singer Kati Laev is from Saaremaa and has noticeable Saaremaa accent (which replaces õ with ö), classical big orchestration, songwriters are the same who wrote Airi Vipulkumar Kansar's song last year.

"Love a Little Bit" - frontman of the band Jonathan Flack is from Australia and has lived here for five years.

Jüri Pootsmann entered with two songs. Both would have qualified but they chose only one.

"Sally" - writer Stansilav Bulganin is from Moscow, other band members are someone with American roots plus few Estonians.

"Supersonic" - Normet hyped it as "Laura's big comeback song", "very powerful".

I don't know. I did not watch his Estonian Idol season and the only song he's released so far was basically a <insert vocals here> type of pre-written "template" just to get a single out the day after the victory. I do have faith in Stig and his team.

Well, if the song is good... It is written by Fred Krieger and Stig Rästa after all.
Personally I do find him interesting and his performances (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEP0F8KL79A) to be enjoyable (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tQoCLQmE2A) with a great natural yet distinctive charm. He feels very comfortable on stage. Same with his voice. But maybe not for everyone.. Each to their own, I suppose. I'm interested to see what kind of music exactly he'll be making now, he's still such a fresh star.. "Torm" was pretty much forced on him, still don't like that song much, that one's indeed very blah. :? I guess we'll see.

I have no idea when we'll have most or all of the songs available, but I made a little summary of the more interesting noteworthy artists of this year imo and examples from their other songs, before the actual ones will start roaming in:

Põhja-Tallinn - well, some of the members of the band have switched and changed and left since 2013... thought they were going to break up soon, but hey. Their latest song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaP_Vy11xew

Zebra Island - a pretty damn good indie pop band.. I think their song is gonna be something I'll really like. Good stuff. Very excited to hear it, they said It'll be up tomorrow.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbE0grBLLYw

Würffel - pleasant quality electro-pop.. probably their most known song, other stuff is good as well though

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsfD3pZjVNM

Cartoon & Kristel Aaslaid - nothing much to say... Cartoon is very famous EDM group by Estonia's standards. Their previous song with Kristel was a hit and apparently the authors of "Immortality" are also Kerli Kõiv and Iiris Vesik (very well-known names... and Iiris is just brilliant) along with Cartoon (Ago Teppand is most notably Iiris' producer... Joosep Järvesaar used to be the singer of a pop-punkrock band called Bedwetters who won an mtv ema award in 2007, now is part of Cartoon, obviously :D). Could be a big contender. Definetly very A-lister names in a way.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PluBc_kIZQ

Gertu Pabbo and Jüri Pootsmann were both the superfinalists of this year's Estonian Idol, Jüri Pootsmann being the winner. Therefore, they are well-known, but haven't released much music yet. As said, Pootsmann's song was written by Fred Krieger and Stig Rästa. It's definetly one to hold out for as well. Don't have very high expectations for Pabbo's song..

I Wear* Experiment - amazing indie

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjINhK7oRu0

Windy Beach - Tuuli Rand has taken part twice before with Söörömöö and Teele Viira. This stuff seems pretty good, though. Her Eesti Laul song probably won't be a big contender, but perhaps one of the better ones.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkCbqahUko8

Mick Pedaja - Eh.. I'll be interested to see what his Eesti Laul song is like.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXv4iO9segQ

Grete Paia - She's one of the most popular singers here currently with many hits, also got second place in Eesti Laul 2013, obviously... I expect it to become a hyped song once again, and a contender... Kind of sad that it's in English though, Estonian seems to work well for her. Her latest hit:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-oSSZKa8-M

Laura is Laura.. Sven Lõhmus' original.

Anett Kulbin (singer of Wilhelm from previous 2 years)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEzRG-yp8tM

La La Land - xshrug... seems pretty annoying. Apparently it's a girl group put together by Tanja or something like that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziTJBD4HFSo I don't know what their actual song is like, but this just reminds me of like a mix between Electro Velvet and Milki. :S

Other artists I don't know much to say about either since most of them are newer projects with pretty unknown authors, have no songs up or nothing worth mentioning.

Anyways, right now it looks like it's highly likely that either Cartoon & Kristel Aaslaid, Jüri Pootsmann or Grete Paia is going to win.

I'm so glad Zebra Island got through this year. It's their third time, I think.

This was their entry for EL2012:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39FmyQbgeJY

They were disbanded/on hiatus for a short time, reformed and tried again last year with Lights & Shadows. I could see that song not making the cut this or some other year, but picking Airi or Bluestocking over it is a crime!!

I agree with those three as well. For me the question is simply is Cartoon's song good enough to hold off Grete and Juri in the last three televote. For it to be anyone else they will need a killer song. There are some other talented artists though and i rate Würffel.Iv always liked Rosanna Lints and think she is getting better all the time.

Because he often makes very generic commercial music without much artistic value (and he rarely does anything outside of the pop genre). For something bad he has done in the past. Well this

The thing about Sven Lõhmus is that he's as much a businessman as he is a songwriter, and he is the symbol of commercialism in Estonian music.

He is capable of producing good and meaningful pop music, but he is very hit-and-miss. Mostly just a "miss" lately.

My first impression of Zebra Island: "How many times":
Sounds quite "Madonna-ish".Timbre of the voice, the main chorus, hook line, arrangement...
It's nice to listen to, but it lacks a bit a special highlight for me. Not something that would find its way on my shortlist for the final.

He is a cheese merchant. You are probably basing your assessment on songs he has sent to estonian preselections which indeed have some hits (eg Lauri Liiv - Soolo was a very good entry by him). Rändajad ja päästke noored hinged are good in esc terms (but were not even the best in the preselection), but are really not that good if you compare them to music outside esc. (then again a controversial statement perhaps: ESC in general has crappy music) You should hear what crap releases to the domestic market. He sometimes creates random überlame pop groups that are meant to only have 1 single and are annoying as hell (eg suntribe, or the band below)

It's not outstanding either. Sounds like background music for a lounge. Good groove though and the singer has a good voice. But again, I don't see this on my shortlist for the final.

My first impression after listening to The Wear Experiement: "Patience"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=My5KZQqi--U

Should have been your 2014 entry tbh.

And I liked both Rändajad and Rockfeller Street (the first one way more than the second one though). I agree "Let's Get Loud" is just a piece of rubbish though. I guess comparing what he does for Eesti Laul with your music scene outside Eurovision is not relevant, since in every single country, you'll find more quality music for various reasons: genres that don't do well in the contest, popular artists who don't want to enter the competition, songs that are only made to have a success at national level, etc.

I wouldn't say the level of quality music-Wise is bad in Eurovision, but most song of national finals are written with the aim of both complying with Eurovision rules (catchiness, length of song, music gimmicks, etc) and appealing to as many people as possible abroad, which may make us think this is of lesser quality than music we listen to on a regular basis.

Hmmm. :) I quite like "Hispaania tüdruk", probably my favourite so far. Or at least it's the most catchy and memorable. I've listened to it like 10 times in a row now. :? Or maybe that's just because it's especially pleasant and summery and warming to hear after a very chilly and rainy day here, after which I've just been shivering under my blanket for two hours. Wouldn't mind listening to this on the radio at all. And it is only the demo. The "Kuula" lines in this song were a bit disturbing at first, though. Don't know why they needed to that. :D

Most of the "known names" have a lot to prove.

Põhja-Tallinn's popularity has diminished drastically since first album. Plus we don't know if their Eesti Laul entry will feature Jaagup Kreem or will they completely ruin their song again as they did the last time. (Fake edit: actually we do know, I just checked, ERR has updated the list and it does indeed include Jaagup Kreem)

Gerttu Pabbo (and even Jüri Pootsmann) is known not for her music but for being on a TV show. While I have a lot of faith in Stig working with Jüri, Priit Pajusaar has not done any pop music since he last trolled Juhan Paadam in 2008 with Leto Svet. I have no expectations for his collab with Gerttu.

Laura has only released a handful of new songs since 2009. Will her popularity still hold up? We'll see.

And when we look at the other side, then Eesti Laul has always given a fair chance to less popular artists. Nobody knew who SHCBB were before EL2014, I don't think Daniel Levi were more popular a year ago than Würffel (or even IW*E and Zebra Island) are now.

(then again a controversial statement perhaps: ESC in general has crappy music)

I understand your point of view but, in my opinion, Rändajad helped to define Estonia as one of the leader countries in ESC and in the international musical scene. The work he did with Sandra was just great... forget the rest if you want

Most of the "known names" have a lot to prove.

Põhja-Tallinn's popularity has diminished drastically since first album. Plus we don't know if their Eesti Laul entry will feature Jaagup Kreem or will they completely ruin their song again as they did the last time. I agree eerik.Würffel could be a darkhorse to do well as i rate Rosanna Lints highly. There are some talented/newer, less popular acts who could easily challenge if they have very good songs. You would have to think Cartoon and Grete will set the bar high though and are the two most likely to make the final three.Unless their songs are poor, but then their writing teams say thats unlikely.

Huh, where the hell did that come from and why is it only on a random mp3 site?! Anyways, that's an early demo version. Final version should be released soon based on Jaan's faceook updates.

I do like how the lyrics are basically about seduction and (oral) sex. Owe Petersell from the pre-selection jury commented earlier that the parents should perhaps "cover their kids' ears", but there's nothing like that, at least not in this demo.

It's okay. Nobody is forced to reveal their songs early, they just have to hand over final versions to ERR by that date. Last year we didn't hear the winner (and about five other songs if I remember correctly) until ERR uploaded them.

I dont agree eerik on Laura.(though i do trust your judgement highly) mainly because i think this suits Laura's style
Moonwalk came 2nd in Eesti and was weaker than Supersonic,
Sunflowers was a great song but wasnt done well for Eesti Laul, yet came 3rd (Liis Lemsalu did a much better version in Laula mu laulu 4, 3 )
Destiny was good but far too electro and sounded like a demo yet again came 3rd.

The question's now for me are does Laura have the best Lõhmus song or does Grete have it?,and what do Cartoon have?,we need those :?

Eeehh.. "Supersonic" starts out very promising, love the first minute a lot, but I'm not really keen on the refrain/rest of it, since it is almost literally all pumped up until the end of it once the refrain starts, which is tiring... But I'll get where people are coming from if this gets hyped...

Well, Moonwalk still remains my personal favourite of Laura's and pretty much out of all of Estonia's selections.

Pootsmann's song is still one to look out for as well. ;)

Laura's "Supersonic" is amazing as a piece of music. Some pretty wonderful pop there, but lyrically it's not great. The verses are a bit "Me Tarzan, you Jane". For something that's so darn slick, I would have hoped for finer lyrics. Anyway, i'm sure i'll get over myself in time and not care. The song is amazingxheart
