Before I had joined FSC, everything I knew about Dutch music was based on their ESC entries. Not surprisingly, I didn't think highly of it. The last few years I've been exposed to a ton of Dutch music, thanks to FSC. It was quite a shock for me to discover that they have some amazing performers who produce amazing songs. NL is easily one of my favirite countries in FSC. So my question is, why are we not seeing that music in ESC? NL and UK are the two countries that have the most discrepancy between the music they send to ESC and the music they produce otherwise.

Well regular pop songs do well all the time xshrug

Unfortunately most of the time you have to be one of the countries in favor with the EBU or a large voting bloc for it to be successful :(

You did get 5th with the jury this year but unfortunately flopped in the televote. I think the poor "draw" and stage presentation killed it rather then the regular song xshrug

Well, Trijntje failed, but most of the people already saw it coming. Let's try to send an actual artist this year ok guys? ;)
Trijntje was a great singer, but I felt she just went to Eurovision to have fun and do some nice sight seeing in Vienna. She and her team obviously had no plan or strategy, explaining the dry performance and our elimination. I still believe that we should keep sending our bigger names to Eurovision, but they have to be visionairs instead of regular singers. There are plenty of talented artists from the ::nl that might consider going, my favourites would be:

1. Dotan: He actually showed interest last year and we didn't send him? Why on earth not, he would have cruised into the final!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2ZB7WF_Hko

2. Kensington: They will never win the contest, but I don't care about that. I want the rest of Europe to take us seriously in Eurovision again in they are definately capable of doing that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkmjCAjAQug

3. Miss Montreal: A great singer, but also a very capable songwriter.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdB3TkUj8QQ

4. Alain Clarke: Again somebody who showed interest, but was pushed aside for Trijntje! This would be our answer to Australia, but with much more soul.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nMc0wqgr2E

5. Racoon: So much experience and a band that will definitely knows what they are doing. They could be a huge succes if they get the same freedom that the Common Linnets got.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nObLrNWMBqQ

6. Kenny B: Not my favourite, but if he can create something like this, it could be a very fun performance. We can also don't care about our placement and just keep it in Dutch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlHZ_Z8sUMs

7. Caro Emerald: So we can show the UK what they did wrong this year

NL is easily one of my favirite countries in FSC. So my question is, why are we not seeing that music in ESC? NL and UK are the two countries that have the most discrepancy between the music they send to ESC and the music they produce otherwise.

Because those in charge are affiliated with a broadcaster that is very old-fashioned and rooted in so called family values. They are always inclined to play it safe. Think 7th Heaven (The American TV show) atmosphere, without the religious stuff. They'd rather fail with something mediocre than take the risk of entering with a song that could potentially be very polarizing.

Additionally, artists like Trijntje actually sell a lot in the Netherlands, especially in terms of albums and shows.

Sending Anouk, a few years back, was actually astonishing and from their perspective a big risk, since Anouk is an opinionated rock chick, that also looks the part, even though she sang a classy ballad instead of her normal repertoire.

After Anouk they've slowly started to default back to safer entries and unless something significant changes in their approach that will probably continue to be the case.

They do no learn from watching ESC and going out in Europe to see what kind of music is popular enough to have a good result in ESC, instead they believe that stuff like Trijntje should be good enough to win, simply because they like it and therefor assume that the rest of Europe should like it as well and if they don't they have no taste.

Oh trust me I know. I would die if we sent Bombay Bicycle Club, Foals, George Ezra, The 1975, Everything Everything, anyone even close to that level of quality. But it won't happen unless some unknown indie band is ballsy and the BBC decide to take the risk.

Monique is the sister of well-known singer Jan Smit who also provides the ESC commentary for the Nethers.

Oh god it hope the rumors are true :o xbow

Any song of Dotan (even his average work) will probably already be in my top 10 and a certain place in the final. It could cement our place among the serious Eurovision countries for the next couple of years!
The mistake we made last year is we sent a singer, who had no clue on what she wanted to do on stage and just wanted to enter eurovision because it "sounded like fun". We can now go back on sending actual artist to the contest and the fact that Dotan already applied in 2015 shows that he already has a plan on what he wants to do. Let's to back to sending real artists to Eurovision like Anouk and the Common Linnets and leave the dark years of non-qualification finally behind us! ::nl

...Feh. I can't say I'm super enthused at the moment about the chances for me liking the Dutch entry; he seems like one of those fratty, dime-a-dozen, "I'm sensitive; f*** me" white guys with acoustic guitars that I just can't stand. I'll reserve a final judgment until February when we hear the song, at which point he'll of course release something I love and be number one for the year, but in all likelihood, I don't see The Netherlands bothering my "LOVE" list this year.

Finally got into the rumours about Dotan :D Would've been a great choice, but...

I like this guy as well. His voice is charming to me, and if they manage to keep it his style and not making something weird mainstream radio pop like with Trintje Oosterhuis, then I'm pretty sure they'll qualify. Absolutely my favourite genre x12s

And maybe Ilse will be co-writer, then they should make it to the final

Meh, for me - nothing special, really not my cup of tea... will it qualify? I don't think so, but who knows, maybe i'm the only one who really don't like that music. I prefer something like from 2014, yeah, Netherlands did a great job, it was a masterpiece and deserved 2nd or even 1st place.

Ok, after recovering from the news that Dotan is NOT going to Eurovision, I'm acutally ok with this choice.

I personally did not know Douwe Bob that well, but after listening to some of it's work I can say it's pretty nice. My only problem is that this choice is again very "safe".
AFROTROS really want's to keep its clean image and I guess Douwe Bob fits more in that description than Dotan. Winner of a talent show, nice songs, but not too challenging or different.

I think its miles better than Trijntje, but it's not as innovative as Anouk or the Common Linnets. If he has a clear idea on which type of song he wants to sing and how he wants to perform it, I can see us in the final again. His live voice is strong and I see him capable of writing something special for the contest. Overall, i'm happy with this choice, while still being a little dissapointed since we could have sent something even better. AFROTROS has to realise some day that the safe way is not always the best way. In any case i will be cheering for my country again in March! Go ::nl !!!!

I read the words "Talent" and "Show" and went in expecting the worst......... and ended up getting something actually not quite bad at all. Everything is very polished (which is usually a bad thing for me with singer-songwriter stuff) but the songs are actually rather enjoyable, tinged with a bit of melancholy but still full of sunshine. his delivery is also pretty clear, not at all inflected which is nice to hear. "Hollywood" in particular is very enjoyable (I just played that twice). It's by no means extraordinary but it's super listenable, pretty infectious stuff that doesn't send me running a mile. I'm sure i'd have been head over heels for this during my little Rufus Wainwright obsession about 6 or 7 years ago. A promising first artist reveal for 2016.

This has me way more intrigued than the previous two Dutch announcements.

That might give him a shot at escaping my 30s. I just don't want it to be a guitar ballad designed to get him laid or an empty party song - looks like we're avoiding at least one!

He's nice, he's a good musician, he's goodlooking, I'm not too keen on his voice but it's decent anyway. My only fear, knowing that it'll be an uptempo song, is that we're going to hear a copy of Guy Sebastian (which may be the trend for 2016, mark my words).

I'm also afraid of the infamous Dutch bad taste in staging, we saw it a hundred times in the past. It's going to be difficult though doing worse than Trintje's outfit last year, so I'm optimistic :D

The more I listen to Douwe Bob's work, the more I get the feeling i might have underestimated him. I think his songs actually have a high artistic value, it only takes a few listening to get used to it. I heard he is going fur an up-tempo song , but I hope he doesn't go overboard. I think a ballad will be enough for him to stand out, but uptempo has the risk of becoming too repetetive. I hope he sends something like the News, which gets better with every listen and is could sound really great live.

↑ Yeah, that's a pretty good one! Although there's not a single song I've heard of his that that I don't like and they do get better with every listen. Personally I so far like his slower songs a bit more though. Fine Line (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEiJd8BMbL8) is just exquisitely amazing, the last third and the build-up to it is delicious. So I was a bit disappointed initially when they said it was gonna be an up-tempo song, but I suppose that's a better call in the end. :D He definetly has his own quite distinctive style though and the artistic value that you talked about, so whatever the song's gonna be like, whilst being refined and high quality, I don't think it's gonna blend into the mass, which is very good. So yeah, I'm quite optimistic with my expectations tbh. ;P

I have no idea what to expect. Looking at his songs so far, I think it could be A. a borefest or B. a piece of art.

Last september Douwe Bob told in a Dutch tv show (DWDD) that he's in it to win it. He is very motivated to do well. Since his Eurovision entry will be part of his new album, i think we can expect something good. The first single of a new album, has to be really good to make sure people are interested in buying your album. Im sure he knows what he's doing. Not quite sure if i will like the genre myself.

Looking at the NF's i think it will be a tough year. There are so many great entries and i expect strong entries from countries like Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania (or will they choose Ruta...), Finland, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Armenia. That's already 9 countries! Oh i forgot Poland if they send Margaret. Sorry Douwe... :(

Guys, the bookmakers use Betfair as their guide to pricing up the ESC markets & the people who set the odds on the Betfair exchange are every day people investing money in the Eurovision market. The prices you see are a product of the amount of money being wagered. The only way in which the odds compilers working for the bookmakers try and use their skill is in offering a slightly bigger price on a country the odds compiler thinks he or she can get beaten, ie, the odds compiler wants to attract customers to back this country because he or she believes it will not win.

Similarly, if a bookmaker is offering the lowest price on a country, it is either because they respect its chances greatly and are not keen to lay it ('lay' means to take the bets of customers wanting to back that country) and/or they have already taken bets on it at bigger prices and have enough of a liability on it winning already. This is partly what has happened with Betfred this year who led the way among the bookmakers pricing up the whole Eurovision market win-only. It was offering 66-1 Poland early on, then cut to 33-1, & now you see it is 7-2. Betfred would have taken bets at those bigger odds so they are now running for cover on Poland, and the other bookies have followed their lead.

Funny how the Dutch again try to score with a country/folk song.

Not bad, but not outstanding either. Solidly produced, but lacks a certain edge. Maybe it will get better after several hearings, like CATS did.

Might just be that this isn't really my kind of song, but I'm a little disappointed. It's cohesive, it does its job, but... that's about all it does. There's nothing to separate it from really any other country song, or make it memorable, or... anything, really. It feels like the songwriter just had a brief saying 'write a country song that lasts for three minutes', put in the minimum required effort to fulfil that, and this is what we ended up with. 4 points, verging on a 3.

The Netherlands to the rescue. This is a darn alright slice of country pop (whatever you want to call it). It comes across as genuine which is a humongous plus and of much importance to me. "Slow Down" is very radio friendly but that doesn't really subtract from the song. The verses are more interesting than the (dare I say) repetitive chorus but overall everything works well. It's nothing super special but it's totally listenable, and in what is shaping up to be such a dire year, this song is near enough like a diamond. It's got a really timeless feel to it.

10 points.

I don't understand how a lot of people weren't mesmerized by Calm After The Storm from the first listen. Anyways, it's not even slightly close to that level for me... so yes I am disappointed but well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ... maybe i brought it upon myself, it just doesn't compare to most of the other songs for me from him or from ESC 2016 so far. Seems like an extremely random song. Nothing makes me want to listen to this repeatedly. But I really like him sigh. And it's not a bad song of course, probably will grow on me, I would give it 7 points for now.

Sorry, don't like it at all. It's a clear attempt to copy 2014 and I think it falls flat on its face in comparison. It sounds dated and I don't feel any sense of authenticity that this music should really have - Specially formulated nonsense. The Dutch have been such a let down the past few years. :? Will this qualify? Probably. Will it win or come top 5? Not even a chance, not even top 10. There are much better songs that kill it, and the Netherlands doesn't have the luxury of late draw either this time.

Gosh yes, because I'm just so desperate for Sieneke and de toppers to make their grand return to the Eurovision stage. No, don't try to be funny and insult me it doesn't work. Trijtntje (sorry if it's spelt wrong, going on memory here) was hardly a breathe of fresh air with her bland pop song which eventually bombed at Eurovision -something I and many others saw coming a mile off. I never meant Douwe was copying, I meant the TV channel was trying to copy 2014, why else would they jump onto country music again? Not for the love it, I know that. It's them attempting to score big again with a formula that somehow paid off, only I don't see it working anywhere near as well as last time.

You do know the TV channel has no input and it's the artist deciding what song to use? Also you mentioned the Netherlands were a disappointment the last couple of YEARS, so that includes Anouk and The Common Linnets. Both scored high. This song fits Douwe Bob's style and his previous albums, so he's not copying anybody here, but is just being himself instead of adjusting himself to ESC.

Oh dear, I however think that this is more authentic than the 2014 entry which I found it a bit more mainstream and soulless, but if you are talking about the Dutch broadcaster's kind of strategy...well even if it'd be true, I don't think it makes the song any worse. Just like sending something "not so dated" wouldn't make it any better.

I'm torn. It certainly feels genuine emotionally, and I do like some of the melodic tricks he pulls, but I'm not big on his voice. The last minute is great, mostly because he drops the Southern accent and just decides to sell the message of the song in his own perfectly lovely, genuine accent. I give this a VERY tentative thumbs up - it could wear thin very quickly, or it could be something I really start to fall for. It's certainly going to escape my 30s, unlike I predicted when he was announced as the artist.

Maybe so, but they still picked him knowing his style and the sort of song that would come out of it. I doubt he just turned up at their offices like "heeeyyyyyy I'm going to represent us this year at Eurovision" and they were like "lol ok whatevs". They were a disappointment for me because they don't suit my taste, not overall at Eurovision and yes, that does include both Anouk and The Common Linnets, just because they scored well doesn't mean I have to like their songs. Again, I never said he was copying, i said the broadcaster was copying, which is said in my post you quoted. Either way, I still dislike the song.
