I think they should stick to their silly/cute entries. They've made it their own trademark so why not keep it. But since most fans ask for symphonic approach, for the sake of Latvia I hope they send something eqaully as epic but that would actually make them qualify.

WhoKnows
7th May 2014, 15:15
They need to change their selection process. Obviously opening it up to the public doesn't work as the public seems to work for the most hopeless acts. Maybe time for an internal selection. They MUST have some decent artists in Latvia.

Sean

As long as they don't withdraw...

AshleyWright
7th May 2014, 21:40
I think for a country who has stayed with a NF even under terrible results, to suddenly move to an internal selection is probably the beginning of the end for them. (unless you're the Netherlands). NF's can easily work there if they don't pick novelty acts for the show.

WhoKnows
7th May 2014, 22:01
What makes you think they'll suddenly stop picking novelty acts? I don't think trying out a different method for a year or two would be the end. Not if it pays off.

Maybe because they're literally the country with the worst results in the last few years, ending in the bottom 3 of the semi-finals every year since 2009?

True but they (barely) escaped the Bottom 3 this year. LOL.

The Latvian taste in music is odd and you never know what they're going to do. While I personally had a soft sport for "Cake to bake", I believe they should have sent the Runner Up, it's something the juries would have liked.

Why would that matter? Latvia isn't doing well at all...

Because it proves their bad Eurovision results are not inherent to their culture/politics/etc.
Because Estonia 2009 is a great example how bad ESC results can be turned around to success.
Because they want to be better than their neighbours.

I still think after a while they will just get fed up of paying money to fail. We'll see what they decide on.

I still think after a while they will just get fed up of paying money to fail. We'll see what they decide on.

Small and poor country, EBU participation fees are low. Seen their natonal finals, they don't spend much money on those either. At the end of last year, there was a small crisis in our national broadcaster, ERR, about where to get money for World Cup broadcasts. Contracts had been signed years ago, money has to be paid and matches have to be shown. There were talks about shows and programmes getting cancelled, some eventually did. They specifically pointed out there's no sensible reason to withdraw from Eurovision Song Contest. It does not cost that much, especially considering the public interest it generates. I would imagine the situation is similar in Latvia.

What they need to do is reinvent their selection process.

A-lister
17th May 2014, 22:46

Because they send pretty bad stuff

But so does Lithuania.

Fact of the matter is, I only see Estonia really paying attention to ESC, and that's also why they're the most successful Baltic country in the contest.

AshleyWright
17th May 2014, 23:01
ESC is worth while contest for the viewing figures, very true. But as you have put in the viewer ratings, ESC got really bad share of the ratings in Latvia. SF1-11%, SF2-3.9%, Final-7.5%. It really is a matter of time, LTV really need to book their ideas up and start taking it seriously.

Sean
18th May 2014, 05:22
Simple facts are that the worse a country does in Eurovision the less interest people will have for it. Just look at the Big 4 crisis a few years ago when we put in shite and the interest spiralled down...

Latvia really need to make sure they select more Saule riets and stronger packages in future otherwise it will be a matter of a 2-3 years before they go.

ParadiseES

They just need a new system of choosing the entry that's all They had quite a few songs that would qualify for the final in the selection this year but instead went for the borderline qualifier song, they should just pick Samanta Tina and get her to sing 6 songs and have the public decide which one she should sing in Vienna, as long as they don't have a novelty song in the mix she should do OK

I keep telling you, Latvia is not going anywhere while Estonia and Lithuania are doing reasonably well.

Their struggle over the last six years reminds me a lot of Estonia 2004-2008. They keep changing parts of their pre-selection process but the overall format is the same. They need a complete overhaul to attract new talent and new audience.

Well, the last format is OK. It's basically the same as Eesti Laul. The whole show is entertaining and the level of the competition has become OK, though way worse than Estonia, but Estonia in itself has the best potential IMO.
The main problem is that they always go on stupid songs or bad fun songs. Cake to bake has to be among the best songs of the last years, which means...

Well... How could they choose "Beautiful song" ? xcrazy

Verjamem
23rd August 2014, 14:36
To be honest, I don't expect anything good/interesting from Latvia in 2015. Even if they have something nice in NF with potential to qualify from semi-final, Latvian people prefer to send mediocre funny song. LTV must change something in method of choosing the representantive and entry, if they really want to make a final.

henhu

Latvians seem to have the same habit as the British did with picking the completely wrong song, and go for jokey songs. Even Samanta Tina's song for 2014 "Stay" was way better than what actually won, she seems to get to so close and fail at the last hurdle. 2nd 2012, 2nd 2013, 3rd 2014. It's been mentioned but Latvia really need to cut the NF down and stop all the joke songs getting to the NF stage.

I wouldn't actually imagine "Saule Riet" doing much better than "cake to bake". Nevertheless it is among the songs that was better than "cake to bake" and deserved the win more. Silly idea but Latvia should perhaps send Elina Garanca. She sings so well and no need of acting (since I think it's why Latvia failed in 2012 and 2014 despite good songs).
By the way, after the bad entry sent by Belgium (sorry to our neighbours) this year, sending Elina could improve the image of opera at ESC.

"Here we go" is trash of course, but that doesn't make "I Need a Hero" any good though... it's like two type of evils

I thought there was a slight improvement in the quality of the NF this year (maybe because of the Made in Latvia promotional theme), but they need to get rid of the superfinal, like most NFs that have that feature. Superfinals with just two or three songs tend to cause second-guessing and impulsive decisions.

Well, I just think "I need a hero" was a song that could bring back Latvia in final. I mean, they haven't seen final from 2008. xshrug It was best song for eurovision, strong ballad that would suit both tastes - televote and juries. Not entirely sure how trustworthy this is, and the lack of information does help. but the new selection process will have 3 semi finals (2nd/8th/15th February), and the final on the 22nd. The new show will be called Supernova and a jury will select the song. I assume this means they are getting rid the televote.

eerik
6th November 2014, 19:42
From what I understand:

Pre-selection jury (international?) will select ten entrants (and six back-up entrants).

In the following three rounds (2nd, 8th and 15th February), some sort of eliminiations and qualifications takes place via jury and televoting.

In the final (22nd February) there will be four performers. Jury (local and international?) and televoting, two will qualify for the super-final where only televoting is used.

No it doesn't seem like that at all. The shows before the final are supposedly semi-finals and the artists will be singing their actual entries.

pinkchiffon
9th November 2014, 16:38
The new rules don't look incredibly different. The only part I'm not excited about is the rule that an entry can't have been published anywhere else. Most potential entrants won't have problems with that, as they aren't planning to anyway, but last time, second-place Dons entered with a song that was already a hit the previous autumn. If an established artist is busy or has to release something on schedule, they probably won't be able to come up with a song specifically for the NF, and won't participate.

There was nothing wrong with the format last year, and there's probably nothing wrong with it this year either, but if they don't want to send humorous entries, they should understand that if one is there, the public will vote for it. Especially with a televoting-only superfinal, that's just asking for trouble.

Can they please just send Samanta Tina internally? I can't bare to watch her get that little heart of hers broken any longer. Can someone explain me (see what I did there?) why she fails each year, despite improving so much each time? I mean, I am secretly glad that she didn't win last year as the cake was delicious, but now is her momentxpray

Let's remind ourselves where it all begun for Samanta. The emotional "For Father".

Listen to the song I posted a few pages ago. Her voice is MADE to be used for this kind of out of control, destructive power. She needs to step away from safe entries like the ones she entered with in 2013 and 2014, and start using her powers for evil.

Oh my gosh, yes! xheat She needs to enter something like that, then everyone can be happy and get behind her. That song has it all. She should have put this song aside for her inevitable 2015 participation.

After hearing that, I'll feel so let down if she tries another pandering "is this what a successful Eurovision entry is supposed to sound like?" song like last year. She needs a song that's big enough for her high drama. And Latvian language is always in demand, of course.

Imagine finishing second to "Beautiful song" and "Here we Go".Talk about being mugged.:o

Latvia need to get a jury involved.Going 100% televote has proved a disaster for them.Samanta Poļakova should stop trying to manufacture a win and instead enter something a bit darker and more moody that suits her.You would think writers would be knocking her door down with songs given her potential so id question her management as well.

Perhaps Latvians dont want to send attractive contemporary women who can sing and have a bit of the crucial je ne sais quoi.

http://www.escunited.com/home/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/latvia2.png (http://www.escunited.com/home/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/latvia2.png) Latvia will be hoping to end their absence from the Eurovision final in 2015.
It seems Latvia – who have been out of the Eurovision final longer than any other country – are ready to show Europe what they can do! The Latvian broadcaster recently announced the Baltic nation would have a new selection process in 2015 entitled “Supernova”.
The show takes Latvia away from the Eirodziesma format of recent years and invites soloists and groups to bring a song worthy of winning Eurovision next year to end a dismal run of results. Three semi-final shows will take place on February 2nd, 8th and 15th with the national final to be held on February 22nd 2015. A mix of televoting and jury will decide which of the four finalists will represent Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest and hopefully end the country’s six year wait for a final participation.

Latvia won the contest in 2002 with Marie N’s “I Wanna” but since 2008 the country has had a poor performance, finishing last in the semi-final three times and failing to reach the final for six years in a row. Aarzemnieki in 2014 achieved the most points for a Latvian entry since 2008 but still failed to qualify.
Latvia was last represented in the Eurovision final by Pirates of the Sea in 2008, finishing 12th with “Wolves of the Sea”.
If you are a composer and wish to submit a song to represent Latvia you can do so using the Supernova 2015 web form here (http://ltv.lsm.lv/lv/izklaide/supernova-2015/).

As much as I loved Saule Riet, it would have had the same faith in ESC as Bulgaria in 2013 and Portugal in 2014. So it was probably for the best that it didn't win.
If Smanta Tina returns, then I really hope it is going to be something better than "Stay". That would have been a guaranteed last place in the 2014 semi. Her songs in general are very flat and generic.

Love injected is like a screechier version of Start a fire. And there is no way that the juries could overrate Latvia like they the did with Azerbaijan last year, so it would do a "One Night's Anger" at best.
From the published songs so far my favorite is Katrina Ciruls's “Bass”, but that jazzy rap in the second part of the song needs to go.

I had interesting expectations for this one...

Elektro Folk "Dieva Dēli" (Ainārs Majors / latv tautas dainas)
So I found it on the band's website (here, under "jaunami" (http://www.elektrofolk.lv/index.php/en/)) and it doesn't disappoint! If it does include folk songs, though, is that allowed?

I think Aminata's entry is my favorite so far, though. Warm, sexy song with a big sweeping chorus that could fill a huge stage. I thought she seemed interesting last year, I'm happy to see her again with a better song.

What the heck!? What are Latvia playing at? I know they said they wanted a fresh show or whatever, but at least make sure what you've chosen is better than what you've discarded. This Samanta Tina song is incredible and by far her best to date. I remember I was wowed when I heard it a month or two ago. As far as dark electronic pop goes, I find it far better than Nina's song that has just been chosen for Georgia. Samanta's song has proper light and shade to it, a great composition. That aching piano bridge is wonderful. It's annoying how she's built up to this moment and the country has let her down. This probably would have been her year.

I have not listened to many of the other competing songs yet but I have a feeling this could get Latvia out of it's rut. I don't love the song, in fact I imagine it's something i'd find hard to listen to a lot. It is very contemporary sounding though. It feels fresh.

I have soft spot for dodgy Latvia. I thought "Cake To Bake" was a genuinely wonderful song last year, but maybe it's time for Latvia to aim for success. As long as they don't sell out, it won't bother me if i'm not utterly besotted with the song. As long as it's interesting.

Here is Aminata with a male dancer. Maybe this is the way the song will be presented? I'm not sure about the table and chairs (has sitting in chairs ever been a good thing to do onstage?) but I like it other than that, a dance routine with one partner suits the song well. Also, that's the studio version playing over the video. I admit I liked it more live - the chorus was bigger, the ending sounded more natural and I prefer her raw voice with no effects, but most of those problems will be solved with live vocals including backing singers.

I'm not sure how well she's known, but she won a talent show recently (just from looking around Youtube it seems that she both sang and played flute on this show) and she participated in lots of regional music contests before that. She wrote her own entry this year, as well as last year.

It turns out that the performance I posted was a piece for that choreographer's event, so I don't know whether she'll perform with him again.

Oh gosh, you've caught me. What can I say? I've suddenly become a woman and have sent my hot little synth pop song to the Latvian NF. How did you find me out? It must have been that Perfume Genius cover on the soundcloud page?

Of course, I know you came on Earth in the same UFO as Amanda Lear and that you can hide in every appearance, like your beloved diva. Moreover this person claims to com from a "parallel universe" ! :o

Atis Ieviņš "Catfish"

It was supposedly in English but I barely recognised a word.

eerik
1st February 2015, 21:05
I don't understand what the jurors are saying but it sounds like they are forced to make meaningless comparisons to international stars. So far there's been comparisons to Taylor Swift, Ellie Goulding, Lordi, etc.

Framest "Ziemā"

First enjoyable song tonight. The rest have been very "meh" so far.

Stargazer
1st February 2015, 21:51
Ziema was pretty good, but it was on the verge of being a tad... forgetful for me. Maybe it will grow on me more. But apparently the judges said they would prefer to see it in English, which would completely ruin it in my opinion (like Iceland 2012).

LTV plays the worst commercial break music. :?

MNTHA "Nefelibata"

It's like a really really really really bad version of Grimes. I love Grimes, but I guess it makes MNTHA even worse.

Stargazer
1st February 2015, 22:21
The format with a panel of judges really kills the atmosphere and flow of the show. Too much focus is being put on them and what they think, before and after each entry. Nobody cares.

Can't say that there was a song which would be my instant favorite or I would love from the first listening, but there were some good entries and I'm glad that they qualified for the next stage.
Actually 3 from my top-4 qualified and that's good. :D

My biggest hopes was for ElektroFolk but some disappointments are with it too. First that they chose English version... :( Song in Latvian would sound muc better.
And melody of this particular song lacked something too. But still I liked it.

Song 'Nefelibata' seemed quite interesting and original. maybe that style is not so much for my taste but it sounded good. :D
I didn't know this artist before so it was a nice surprise...

I'm glad that jury advanced Framest wit 'Ziemā'. It's a nice song. Christmassy song for ESC in May... Why not xrofl2 I hope it stays in Latvian though they committed and idea of making an English version :(

Can't get what jury and people see in Stafecka and her song... :? I know many here find her talented and likes, but this song is crappy... :?
Instead of it I would prefer to see 'Colours of Love' in te next stage, it was nice and melodic.

Hope for some nice surprises in the 2nd heat. :D

Haha wow, nice 4 qualifiers, especially the ones from the public, MNTHA is like the most Uneurovision-friendly I have heard, but still epic, and ElectroFolk rules, would be a partystarter in Vienna if it happens to win! :D Good start from the Latvians, can only get better! :D

EDIT: and I love MNTHAs title, such a original song title: http://unusedwords.com/2013/11/06/nefelibata/

Looks like a nice show for tonight. I'm cheering for "Free your mind" and "Take me down". By far the best songs and both of them would easily bring Latvia back to the final.

I don't really mind about the rest, but I just don't want "Love injected", "Sweet girl" and "Debesis". Quite boring songs.

Song four is definitely the best one....but I'm sure we haven't heard the winner yet.

GlamSIMorous
8th February 2015, 21:18
The song itself was good, not sure if the singer was the right one. Not enough power to me to be honest, plus that dress might've looked impressive, buuuuut she looked rather stiff. I dont know why but I have the feeling this year we have an overall stiffness problem :D

theCONWEL

Song 5 - The instrumental of this is quite nice, but the melody and the lyrics are terrible...

3. Martins & Ginta
4. The Stones

Stargazer
8th February 2015, 21:59
There's too much focus on the juries. Fine that they want to comment the songs after they have been performed. But nobody cares what they think of the artist/song before it's performed. Just get to the damn song, already!

I think the last three are the big ones. I'm not impressed with Katrina, but she did really well with televoters last year with an equally nondescript song, so she could do the same this year, and Markus and Aminata, as we already know, have been hyped the most.
