The 6th edition of the Uuden Musiikin Kilpailuun will take place on the 28th of January in Espoo Metro Arena, Espoo. Nearly a month ago YLE, the broadcaster in Finland has announced the competing artists. Emma is one of the artists and today she found some time to chat with us.
Hello Emma,
First of all thank you for your time talking to us. How are you ? Can you introduce yourselves ? What can you tell us about yourself?
Thank you so much for having me! I’m doing great! Busy times but I’m enjoying every moment of it.
So I’m Emma, the artist behind the song Circle Of Light which I’m competing with in the UMK17 this year! I’m from Finland but since about 1,5 years ago now live in Stockholm where I work as an music teacher beside my artist career.
Your song that you will be presenting for the Uuden Musiikin Kilpailuun is “Circle of Light”. What can you tell us about the song?
The song is called Circle Of Light, and it’s a song about where you try to visualise an empowering circle around yourself where nothing bad can get inside. No matter what kinds of fears, sorrows or bad energy it can’t get through because you are strong enough to survive all those feelings or situations that everyone feels or goes through sometimes in their life. Inside the circle you are always safe.
What was the inspiration for the song, and did you write it specifically for Uuden Musiikin Kilpailuun and Eurovision?
We wanted to write a song about something that people can relate to and also a song that no matter where you come from or what time-period we’ve lived in, these feelings always lives within us, and we need to find a way to try to overcome such feelings for instance fear. A comforting song telling us we are safe in the circle of light.
What is your impression of the Eurovision Song Contest in general? Do you watch it every year? What is your favourite entry?
I love the Eurovision Song Contest! I do watch it every year. I really liked Måns Zelmerlöw – Heroes. I love a song that has a great message which I think this one has. He sings about that we are all Heroes, and I sing about superpowers we all have which are our inner circles of lights!
Apart from the Eurovision Song Contest , where would you dream to do a performance?
Wow, what an excellent question! I think anywhere is good for me as long as I get to feel the wonderful energy my audience always gives. It doesn’t matter if it’s picnic concert where 5 people are listening or a sold out stadium somewhere in the world. It’s all about the love and the energy I feel!
Do you think performing at the Eurovision Song Contest will have a positive impact on your career?
Yes, I do! I think you get to show who you are as an artist for a large audience. It opens so many doors and I just wish I get to experience all that. That’s my dream!
What is your biggest success so far for you?
My biggest success is overcoming my inner fears I have. I never thought I would be able to do something like this, and here I am – one of the top 10 Finnish UMK artist this year. I feel so blessed.
Can you tell us about your first experience with music?
My first experience with music was at an early age. My father used to play Whitney Houstons I will always love you while we danced and sang to that song together in the living room. When I was 3-4 years old, I used to walk around the mall singing to strangers while my mother picked up grocerys for our family.
Emma thanks for your time. We wish you the best of luck for Uuden Musiikin Kilpailuun. Maybe we see you in May in Kiev!
Thank you so much! I really hope to see you in May! Have a great New Years and Happy Holidays!
