He may not have made it through to the next round in Kyiv but Ireland 2017’s Brendan Murray has survived the first live show of this year’s X Factor UK, with a double elimination instead sending Armstrong Martins and Olatunji Yearwood home.

Murray, who is being mentored on the show by former One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson, opted to perform a piano-led rendition of Ariana Grande’s “Break Free”, earning a strong reaction from the assembled studio audience.

Throughout the series so far, the young singer from County Galway has earned plaudits from the judges and has been tipped to become another Eurovision-related success in the competition. Could Brendan go one better than Saara Aalto a few years back?

Brendan Murray represented Ireland in Eurovision 2017 with “Dying To Try”, failing to qualify for the grand final and finishing 13th with 86 points in the semi-final.
