Eurovision 2023 rehearsals are under way, but despite a busy schedule, Estonian representative Alika has released a new single, “You.”
The song, which starts as an enchanting piano ballad, was written as a birthday gift for a special person in Alika’s life. In our February interview with Alika during national final season, the singer-songwriter told us she was a rock fan. So it might not come as a surprise to some that “You” builds up to an intense chorus halfway through, where the drums and guitar take over.
“I reached out to take something from the ground and accidentally pressed a note in the 2nd octave on my piano,” she wrote on Instagram, where she shared a behind-the-scenes video from the studio. “A whole melody built up in my head and it was the moment when the song was already written.”
Some familiar Estonian names worked on this track too: fellow Eesti Laul alum Fredi, of Anett x Fredi, lends his guitar skills to the track, alongside prominent Estonian producer Gevin Niglas, who also co-wrote and produced three of this past year’s Eesti Laul entries: “Whiskey Won’t Forget” by Carlos Ukareda, “So Good at What You Do” by m els, and “Valik” by Kaw.
Alika is representing Estonia with the song “Bridges” in the second semi-final, where she is performing fourth. The semi starts at 21:00 CET on May 11.
