Umk is due to release its chosen artists for the 2023 national selection on the 11th of January. Finnish newspaper Iltalehti is beginning their rumours for possible artists at the contest, much like we reported for Melodifestivalen.
Yle has given small tips of the artists but their names are tightly kept secret. With 7 artists participating, the newspaper has revealed 3 names.
Robin Packalen began his career as a teen pop star and now sits amongst the top-selling artists with 6 albums being released before his hiatus pre-covid. He returned to the stage in 2019 and now looks to represent his country on the biggest stage.
Portion Boys are a group formed and performing since 2010. They made it to number 1 on the Finish charts in 2021 with their single “Vauhti Kiihtyy”.
The final on this list is Lxandra a lesser-known artist, though still has 20 million streams on Spotify. But she has been rumoured to have been competing in UMK all year.
These artists represent the 3 major music brands of Finland. Something which Yle and UMK have been wanting a move towards to push bigger artists to compete in UMK. And to have a better representation of Finnish music.
The Final of UMK is on February 25th 2023 and it is fast approaching the announcement of all 7 artists to compete in the new year.
Finland were represented by The Rasmus in Turin this year who finished 21st in the final with 38 points. The country has won the contest only once in 2006 with Lordi. The country has recently been represented by artists such as Saara Aalto, Krista Siegfrids and Darude.
