Rumours are circulating in Belgium of a return to a national selection to select their entrant for Eurovision 2023 – although the Belgian broadcaster responsible for the entry isn’t revealing anything at the moment.
Belgium have opted for internal selections since 2017, with the two broadcasters VRT and RTBF taking turns to select the artist for the contest. Now though, it seems that Eurosong may return to select the entry for next year’s contest, according to local publication TV Familie.
The magazine also suggests that Niels Destadsbader has already been selected as the presenter of the competition, having recently switched from VTM to VRT. Representatives from the Flemish broadcaster have not given any indication that this is the case however, telling Belgian website Songfestival.be that “at the moment we cannot announce anything concrete about the selection for our VRT candidate for the Eurovision Song Contest, but of course we will share news about this later.”
Since Laura Tesoro’s tenth place finish in Stockholm in 2016, the nation has experienced mixed results; 4th place in 2017 with Blanche’s “City Lights” and Hooverphonic’s qualification last year with “The Wrong Place” has been split by two non-qualifications in 2018 and 2019. This year’s hopeful Jérémie Makiese will hope to make it two finals in a row with “Miss You”.
