Ahead of the French selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Eurovision France : C’est vous qui décidez, we are thrilled to get know the contestants a bit more. Today, we are super happy to have Marius answer some questions for us!
Marius is a young French signer born in 1999 in Lyon and fell in love with music at a very early age. He will participate in the French selection on March 5 with his song “Les chansons d’amour” and try to represent France in Turin in May.
Hi Marius, thank you very much for interviewing with us! Can you tell us how you decided to participate in Eurovision France : C’est vous qui décidez?
My participation in Eurovision was born with my song “Les chansons d’Amour”. After several unpredictable encounters with Igit and his team, the question of Eurovision was raised, Igit having a very strong link with the contest. My first instinct was to say “No”, Eurovision was for me something immense and unreal. Then I took a step back, I move forward step by step and I am so grateful to be part of this adventure surrounded by lots of magnificent artists. It’s so rewarding!
And what great news it is to see you take part in Eurovision. You will compete with your song “Les chansons d’amour”, can you tell us how it was born?
“Les chansons d’amour” was born as for my participation in Eurovision from several unpredictable encounters with Igit. When we decided to do a song, we met in a café and I told him my story. The idea that I was not listening to, singing or composing French variety before my first breakup immediately inspired him. A few minutes after we parted he sent me the beginning of the text, the idea came to him while walking. The next day I went to the studio with Jonathan Cagne, we created the beginning of the song then we finished the composition and the text a few days later with Igit, before doing the arrangement with Jonathan. We had a week to do the song, and I only did one vocal take for the song.
What a fast process for such a beautiful song. In “Les chansons d’amour” you say you didn’t like love songs before and you show a lot of vulnerability, but what message would you like to deliver to the world through it?
This song is part of my story. It is also a declaration of love for French song. The message that I would like to convey is that despite the dark or melancholy side that this song can have, it also carries light. Today I may be representing France at Eurovision thanks to the experiences that led me to this song. It is the idea that any ordeal or pain can be transformed into something more beautiful.
That’s a very deep message of positivity you carry with your song! About the big night, which will happen on March 5, how are you preparing yourself , and what can we expect from you and your performance?
I try not to think too much, not to project myself too much. I try to take care of myself by cooking and watching Beyoncé performances…I work on my song vocally but also mentally to have all my intentions, I work on my diction. The performance of the big night (March 5) looks a lot like me, there will be poetry and emotion. It is on stage that this song will come to life!
We are very excited to see your performance on Saturday. And one final question: what is your favorite Eurovision song of all time?
I remember a summer when my mother was listening to a compilation of songs from the 60s in her car with a lot of France Gall, including “Poupée de cire, poupée de son” (Luxembourg 1965). I have a rather nostalgic memory thinking about it, moreover it was written by Serge Gainsbourg whom I adore.
