In Memoriam: The Netherlands’ Sandra Reemer has passed away

Sandra Reemer, the Dutch singer and TV personality who represented her country three times at the Eurovision Song Contest, has passed away today after battling breast cancer. She lived to see the age of 66.

Reemer represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest three times in the seventies. On her first attempt, in 1972, she was part of a duet with Andres, or Dries Holten. They sailed to a respectable fourth place with their song Als Het Om De Liefde Gaat. In 1976, Reemer was chosen to defend the Dutch pride after their win the year before; she sang her song The Party’s Over which got her to 9th place. In 1979, she flew out to represent the Netherlands once more. Having renamed herself Xandra, she sang Colorado, which earned her 12th place. She also provided backing vocals for Bernadette in 1983.

Sandra, who was born in Indonesia, was not just a singer but was also active in the world of television, as she was the (co-)host of various game shows. After her days of Eurovision fame, she stayed in the music industry and scored some small hits in the Dutch top 40.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in the beginning of 2017.
