Eesti Laul 2017: Liis Lemsalu “Keep running has a totally different tune compared to “Uhhu”

The 9th edition of Eesti Laul in Estonia is gearing up with it’s first semi-final is scheduled for the 11th February and the second semi-final is scheduled for the 18th February and the final is scheduled for the 4th March 2017. 20 entries are taking part in this year’s competition and Liis Lemsalu is one of the participants and she found time to talk to us today.

Hello Liis

First of all thank you for your time talking to us. How are you ? Can you introduce yourselves ? What can you tell us about yourself?

My name is Liis Lemsalu and I was born in Estonia. Due to my fathers job, I travelled a lot when I was a younger girl. I have gone to different kindergarden, for example when we lived in Germany, I went to a local German kindergarden. Here in Estonia I was put into a Russian kindergarden and so on. Because of all of the travelling I grew up amongst different cultures and countries. My mom and my dad were my base of support and also my best friends.  Now I permanently live in Estonia. I won the “Estonian Idol” competition in 2011 and have done music since then. I am really grateful for having this opportunity as a musician.

I am a really big animal lover and I also have a cat at home. I also love nature and the beauty that lies in the wilderness.

This is your second time at Eesti Laul. How was the experience the first time?

I love Eesti Laul. It is a great way to spread your music to the listeners.

Your song that you will be presenting for the Eesti Laul is “Keep Runing”. What can you tell us about the song? How do you compare it will “Uhhuu”?

Keep running has a totally different tune compared to “Uhhu”. I am really happy with the co-writers team that we have on “Keep Running” and I think that it also sounds really fresh to the ears. The song is talking about an individual who has got their backpack always ready for a certain person. I guess it is a song about being there for your lover, friend, mom ,dad, whatever or whoever comes to mind. It is about a person who you would always go out for different adventures with, a specific person you want to share different moments and memories with.

What was the inspiration for the song, and did you write it specifically for Eesti Laul and Eurovision?

It was written at a Songwriting camp in Estonia. We had four members in our team, two Swedish producers and an Estonian pianist. I wrote the lyrics to the song and because the sun was shining and the sea was quiet the song got it’s inspiration from that camp and the weather on that day basically 🙂

What is your impression of the Eurovision Song Contest in general? Do you watch it every year? What is your favourite entry?

I really like keeping my eyes at the Eurovision Song Contest. It is always so fun and the vibe is also really fun. I think that my favourite entry would be from the Netherlands, The Common Linnets – Calm After The Storm

Apart from the Eurovision Song Contest , where would you dream to do a performance?

That is a really good question! I think I really need to think about that 🙂

Do you think performing at the Eurovision Song Contest will have a positive impact on your career?

I think it would be a good experience, and of course it will give a bigger push on the musical career.

Can you tell us about your first experience with music?

I actually don’t have a specific first memory. But I think it might be connected with some of the kindergarden school that I went to. I remember that when I was 8 years old,  I loved singing in front of the mirror with a hairbrush and etc 🙂

How do you describe your music to people?

It must leave them with a good feeling but it is actually really hard to describe it, better just have a listen 🙂
