This coming Friday the Polish national selection Polskie Kwalifikacje is set to take place, with eleven hopeful artists competing to represent their country at the Eurovision Song Contest this May. Among that list is Sonia Maselik.
Sonia is a Polish singer, songwriter, and composer with significant experience in the competition and music industry. Since releasing her first song in 2015, she has won the RMF FM radio’s competition “Twoje 5 minut” and was a finalist on Szansa na Sukces in 2021. Now she’s ready to potentially add Eurovision to her list of accomplishments!
Hello there Sonia, welcome to ESCUnited.com! We’re so excited to have the opportunity to interview you today. Before we get deep in questions – how are you doing in the build up to Polskie Kwalifikacje?
Hello! Thank you so much for having me here! I feel good, but I’m a bit tired and stressed because the grand final of the Polish kwalifikacje is getting closer! However, I’m trying to do my best and for now everything goes well and smooth.
Now we’ll get to the Polish national final in a moment, but I’d love a chance for our readers to get to know you a bit better! When you aren’t working on new music or performing, what are some things that you do for fun?
When I’m not singing or making music I do a lot of sports! I go to the gym, swimming pool, rollerblading and running. I like to take care of myself and my body because my job also involves being in good physical condition. It makes me feel good, relaxed and gets rid of bad vibes.
And when you are thinking about music, what are some genres, musicians, or other factors that influence the music you like to create?
Pop has always been a genre that I wanted to perform and create. I am inspired by artists such as Max Martin, a Swedish producer or pop-rock icons such as Tina Turner, however it is hard for me to point out just a few personalities who have shaped me as an artist because I listen to different music every day, it all depends on my mood.
When I started with music as a teenager, I experimented a lot. I sang jazz, rock, blues and even hip hop. However, it all always revolved around pop. It’s also hard to explain what exactly attracts me to a given artist or song. I guess it’s a bit of an unknown factor, the so-called x-factor, which gives you goosebumps right after listening or brings back memories, smells, feelings. I look for such truth in my songs and in the music I listen to every day.
Let’s pretend you’re at a karaoke night and you must perform at least three songs. Which songs would you be picking and can you tell us why?
- Simply the best – Tina Turner
- Dolly Parton – Jolene
- Blondie – Heart of Glass
I chose these songs because they are performed by strong women and I consider myself to be strong woman too.
As a songwriter I’d love to pick your brain – if you had the chance to write a song for any artist in the world, who would you want to write for and why?
It could be Katy Perry because I love her style and I think she’s just an interesting personality, but working as a songwriter gives me so much joy that if Bruno Mars or David Guetta invited me to collaborate, I definitely wouldn’t refuse.
On a similar topic, what does your song creation process usually look like? Did the song writing process for your song “Rumours” follow that same process?
Writing each song is different. Sometimes the melody comes first, other times catchy lyrics or both lyrics and top line come at the same time. It all depends on the day. There are days when I can create a few great songs during one session and other times nothing comes out in a two-day session. It also depends on who I’m working with, whether there’s a good atmosphere during the session, whether the producer feels what he wants to say with the words and melody. It’s a very diverse process. In the case of “rumours” the words and melody in the chorus were created at the same time. Sitting in my home studio I came up with this rhythmically broken part “I’ve heard some rumours and I’ve heard some rumours rumours”.
You’ve been releasing music for nearly 9 years now, but this is the first time we will see you in the Polish pre-selection. Have you always wanted to participate and possibly go to Eurovision or is this more of a recent dream for you?
The dream of Eurovision has been with me since 2010. However, for me the most important thing is always to give people joy and inspire. That’s why I am here and that’s why I create music. Eurovision is another opportunity for me to give the joy I have when I sing. I hope this dream will come true one day. The beginnings were different. I started as a teenager.
The breakthrough in my career came in 2020 when I started to deal with music really professionally. Today, with hindsight, I think that it was a process that I had to go through and my participation in Eurovision contest is only a matter of time.
While I know you can’t reveal anything specific about the performance plans for Polskie Kwalifikacje, you have posted some rehearsal teasers that include dancers. But let’s keep the teaser going – if you had to describe your staging in only ten words…what would you say?
The world is not black and white because we are all colorful.
As we close our time together is there anything you would like to share with our readers including how to connect with you on social media or support your music?
