barbara munjas

Hours before the first semi-final of Dora 2024, we are bringing you a couple of words from Barbara Munjas who is going to present herself with the song “Nepobjediva” in this year’s selection. As a reminder, Barbara already competed in Dora so you might recognize her as well as her unique music style.

Hello Barbara, thank you for taking the time to answer our questions and introduce yourself to our readers on ESCUnited! Welcome! First of all, let’s talk about your music in general. How would you describe it to someone who has never heard it and do you have anyone who inspires you in particular?

I struggle with describing my music, and I suspect I’m not alone in this among musicians. I primarily identify with alternative music, but I enjoy experimenting with various genres. Each song possesses its unique vibe, often calling for specific arrangements. My repertoire spans from funk, rock, indie, and alternative pop to occasional jazzy moments—I revel in musical diversity! One artist who profoundly inspires me is PJ Harvey. Her ability to constantly evolve and surprise with fresh, unexpected sounds resonates deeply with me. She’s a musical chameleon, adapting to the mood of her tunes, and I admire that quality about her.

You started as the band member of a folk-rock band Gustafi and later on you formed your own band Barbari before starting a solo career. How do you look back on those experiences and how did that shape you as an artist?

I probably wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t taken that path. Gustafi provided me with a clear vision of what I wanted from music, and for the first time, I experienced the genuine joy of playing music in a band. As time passed and my aspirations grew, I felt compelled to form my own band where I could create my own music, and that’s where everything began to take shape. While I’ve had moments performing solo on stage, and there will likely be more in the future, I generally prefer the camaraderie of being surrounded by fellow musicians. I have discovered my unique way of expressing emotions through music, and being in bands has undoubtedly played a crucial role in helping me navigate and understand it all.

You are a familiar face in the Croatian National Final. You competed back in 2007 with the song “Ti si tu” and last year with “Putem Snova”. How do you compare those two performances considering the number of years between them? How will that experience prepare you for this year’s performance?

In 2007, things were distinct. Dora had a different vibe, the times were different, and I, myself, was in a different place. I wasn’t competing with my own song, so I often say it wasn’t me competing. My goal was never to build a career or gain recognition for singing others’ songs. Instead, I aspired to create my own music, be authentic, and attract an audience for who I am, rather than trying to fit into some box created for me. It’s acceptable to be a product, but only on my own terms and directions. By 2023, things had evolved significantly from 2007. I was genuinely excited because it was something that was mine, something that had my heart in, and everything was going well until the unfortunate moment of an injury, a burn, to be precise. Even after that setback, the experience remained amazing. This year, I approach everything with greater ease. I’ve learned the ropes, and there’s no anxiety. We’re all having a fantastic time, enjoying ourselves immensely. This year’s Dora is a laid-back journey, and being in this state of mind makes the whole experience much smoother.

This year you will present yourself with the song “Nepobjediva”. Can you tell us more details about the writing process of the song and what is its message?

I had this recurring idea about participating in Dora again, which kept switching on and off in my mind. Then, in September, I noticed that the call for Dora was open! Since I was in the midst of composing new music for my upcoming album, I sifted through my existing songs to see if any could potentially fit the Dora format. However, all of them were too lengthy, and I couldn’t condense them to fit the 3-minute requirement. That’s when “Nepobjediva” hit me like a lightning bolt. During the writing process, I realized that I could adapt this song to fit into 3 minutes, and I decided to give it a shot!

Beyond its timing, I also appreciated the positive message that “Nepobjediva” conveys. I wrote the music and lyrics, and Zoran Majstorović crafted the arrangement. The song serves as an ode to healthy relationships and that uplifting feeling one experiences when in the right place within a loving or any other form of relationship. Being stuck in a toxic relationship is akin to hell, and “Nepobjediva” (“Invincible”) explores the opposite – the joy, freedom, and invincibility that come with true, unconditional love. You know you’re in the right place when love is nurturing when it doesn’t hurt, and when you both help each other grow, feel safe, and provide support.

Dora is just around the corner and the final preparations must have started already. Do you feel ready for it and is anything different than last year?

It’s just around the corner. I’m writing this after our final rehearsal before the first semifinal night! Everything is set, and we’re eagerly anticipating our performance in the upcoming first semifinal night. Some of my team members are the same as last year, while there are a few changes. The energy is fresh, and we’re much more easygoing and relaxed this time. I would confidently say that we are ready!

Eurovision attracts talent from all over Europe and beyond. From memory, whose performances and songs are your favorites and how do you relate to them?

Konstrakta. I just resonate with her vibe, lyrics, and energy. She is authentic and unique. People appreciate new things, fresh faces, changes, and being surprised, and she stood out from everyone else. She was simple, innovative, creative, and true to herself.

We don’t expect any details, but can you give us some hints about what we could expect to see on stage for your performance of “Nepobjediva”?

Nah, I won’t say anything. Just hold on for a little while, and you’ll see it all very soon. 🙂
