Once again the BBC have chosen to internally select their artist and song for Eurovision, this year selecting Olly Alexander to represent them in Malmö. Alexander’s internal selection was revealed by the broadcaster on December 16th, and now after a two month wait they have to revealed their song “Dizzy”.
You can listen to the track on the Eurovision YouTube channel below:
The song was penned by both Alexander himself and British music producer and composer Danny Harle. ‘Dizzy’ features a continuous pulsating synth-laden electronic beat coupled with Alexander’s unique tenor vocal, reminiscent of 80’s band such as The Pet Shop Boys.
Alexander is from North Yorkshire, he dropped out of college after landing early acting roles in shows such as Skins, as well as a small part in the Oscar-nominated film Bright Star, opposite Ben Whishaw. He joined the band Years & Years, and signed a record deal in 2013, achieving success with hit singles such as “Desire” and “King” and number one debut album Communion. The band split in 2021 and Alexander has been going solo since.
The BBC are hoping Alexander’s entry will have chart potential and will lead them to a respectable result in Malmö following 4 bottom 5 placements in five years. Mae Muller, who represented the UK last year with song “I Wrote a Song” in Liverpool placed 25th in the Grand Final. Im 2022 Sam Ryder in 2022 with his song “Space Man” managed to get the UK their first 2nd place finish since 1998 with Imaani.
