A newly released document by the Montenegrin broadcaster, RTCG, seems to suggest that the country is gearing up for a grand return to the Eurovision Song Contest that is scheduled for Switzerland next May. The news hit the media and caused quite a splash. In light of only 37 countries participating in the contest in Malmo this year, another Balkan country potentially returning is fantastic news for all the Eurovision lovers and those alike.

After a two-year hiatus, RTCG has shared details regarding the next Montesong, which seems poised to serve as the new national selection process for Montenegro’s Eurovision 2025 entry.

The document lays out the guidelines for artists entering Montesong 2024, so here are the highlights and what we know so far:

  • Submission Deadline: All songs must be submitted by October 1, 2024.
  • Language Requirement: Each song must be at least 51% in one of Montenegro’s official languages.
  • Nationality Requirement: Artists must hold Montenegrin citizenship to participate.

Scoring System

  • Maximum Points Available: 100 points.
  • Composition: Up to 50 points.
  • Lyrics: Up to 30 points.
  • Production: Up to 20 points.
  • Advancement Requirement: Songs must achieve a minimum of 75 points to progress to the competition stage.
  • Fallback Option: If no song reaches 75 points, RTCG may internally select Montenegro’s Eurovision 2025 entry.

While the document is not an official confirmation from the broadcaster, it seems to strongly suggest a return to the scene.

Montenegro last participated in 2022, with Vladana’s “Breathe” failing to reach the Grand Final in Turin, Italy.
